I sprained my ankle walking down my stairs at home in the dark one night to dial down the temperature on the thermostat — I missed the last step and my foot landed hard on the floor instead. (We now have a new system with an app so I can adjust the thermostat on my phone from the bedroom!) It was about three years ago, and a week before I was about to go to the desert, where I had planned on some long hikes. Unfortunately, that didn't happen 11 days ago. I fell backwards and fractured a bone in my right hand at the base of my ring finger. I thought it was a sprain injury but days of swelling and discomfort meant it was probably a fracture, which the x rays confirmed. I'm in a cast for at least 4 weeks. I may be able to resume tennis by mid January,<br /> but I'll probably wait until February. How do you like my orange cast? </p>
