Are you sure I cannot take a look for you? Yes we do have Mexx and there is at least one I can pop by tomorrow on my way to take the train to BF. Send me a PM with the picture if you want. I will leave about 4pm for the train and have an hour to browse a decent mall.

That's a good idea Jayne, I will. I am still learning about stores and brands, so it's very useful info.

The trench was not on my wish or need list, I just fell in love with this one. The more I pondered it, the more I was realising it was perfect. And so were other women, obviously. It's by MEXX, btw, I think it's available in Norway. The beige version is still available in almost all sizes, so you may check the quality if you walks pass the store.

And Una makes such brilliant point of buying substitutes when we realise our mistakes or regrets, that we may end up with more regrets. I am careful not to fall in that trap. I've checked a few stores around here for their merchandise and there are so many trenches of offer, even red ones, but I see faults with all of them. Because they are not *that one*. I'm really so angry at myself, but I try to be philosophical about it to get over it

Just a thought, I saw a gorgeous red trench in the Guess section of a department store that I almost bought right then and there since the color as perfect and the style was gorgeous and so cool. However, I own enough trenches and had to resist it. Can you check that out?

I'm bringing this thread up as I've just pointed Mona here to read some of your wisdom, but also to say thanks for the latest contributions which are too useful not to be shared with others.

Una :: have you been in my head?? I'be been stalking that website several times every day since my sad realization I was too late with deciding to get the red piped trench and noticed they had another spring coat in the new collection.

Same fabric, same color, similar style. And guess what, I didn't think twice but ordered it straight away for the exact reason you mentioned - fear of not missing on that one too. Sort of "I'm much cleverer now" attitude. The new one has been sold out in two days, it is no longer showing on-line, so I guess there are a lot of very disappointed souls out there as well who were thinking way too long about snapping the first one, so are making the consolation purchases.

All the while I have a feeling this second one won't work, it will be to ordinary and thus meh in comparison to the one I missed out on. How's that for carbon footprint, ordering something expecting it'll go back...

You are right, so many ways to go wrong.

Denise :: yes, I plan to be on ebay (I already am ). As for returns, UK had some shops with good return policies and things in Germany seem to be pretty decent, but from what I've figured out from the forum nothing compares to US stores' return policies.

My advice is to check eBay in 6 months.

I think we've all been there Ornella. Last year I started pinning my fantasy acquisitions, then I went back 6 months later to review, and my conclusion was -- there are some things that are worth getting early at full price. BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW WHICH ONES! Some things reflect a look I get sick of, while others are of a style that I grow to love more, hence should have acquired. You just don't know, forgive yourself. Although a possible lesson is to buy something when it really sings to you and buy from a place with generous returns so you can change your mind. (I have no idea if there's a place like Nordstrom or Macy's in Europe with 6 months return privilege.)

Heh, There is this and then there is the buying of many substitute items in the regret phase. Ugh. Or the snap up the next lovestruch impulse purchase out of fear that it will be another one that got away, only to realize it's NOT what you wanted. So many ways to go wrong!

I think that's happened to all of us.

I'm still tracking down a Banana Republic burgundy trench, single breasted (which can be hard to find), mid thigh, perfect in a word, that I missed out on while on a trip to Vancouver. The SA told me there was 1 left on my size at another location in Vancouver but I didn't know if I would have time to go to another store. Next day, while sightseeing I saw the other store, went inside to check, but to my chagrin it was sold out. Still checking on Ebay...

Same with a pair of super expensive gorgeous green Tracey Neuls shoes that went on sale but still too rich for my blood, when I decided that I couldn't live without them they were sold. The worst part is they are handmade and only a few pairs are made for each size so my chances of finding another pair are almost zero.

Right now I have ebay and craigslist searches for those items that got away, I recently bought a pair of Fluevog Chinoa boots that I couldn't get the first time, and they were wayy cheaper so sometimes things do work out

I've also made the mistake to wait for an item only to find it "gone" when I was ready to buy. Well at least if the right item comes along again, you'll feel better about the purchase even if it is out of season right? And eventually items do come back around. I'm sure your trench is out there.

I am sorry Ornella. I think that this is a sign of becoming more focused and knowledgeable of our style. But it still stinks.

Coincidentally, my big regret happened this year too. I have wanted a cranberry color trench for years. While in CA in Oct. with the Fabbers, I found one and I love it ! But I didn't want to lug it home in my suitcase. Well, when I got home ( 2 days later ) it was sold out online and in all the local stores. I desperately called the California store, but alas, it was too late. Our two trenches are probably hanging in the same lucky closet somewhere. I hope that they are happy, because I am not. : (

Mochi, you are so kind, thank you. It's European brand and I fear that with shipping and import duties it would make it a bit OTT even for a trench like this. But, thank you, your kindness is really touching.

My hope is that some tall German fashionista will let this one go unnoticed in her closet for a season, then sell it on ebay, yes.

Oh no! I hate that feeling! It sucks to miss out on something, and only realize it later. I really hope you can find it or an even better one!

I'm very sorry for your bad luck, Ornella. I hope the odd piece gets returned, in your size of course. It is a fabulous trench, and I follow you all the way in wanting a RED trench.

Ornella, before getting to the bottom of your post I *thought* this would be red! I hope you're able to find one - it's beautiful.

I think we must all do that to some extent, because the opposite is buying too much/too quick. So while you can resolve to be quicker out of the gate and all that, this'll happen again.

It's especially hard to think ahead of season. So many times I'd pass up dressy evening clothes in the late summer early fall--not in the mood--and then panic at holiday party time. Now the perfect velvet top is sold out in my size.

When something is actually in a store IRL, I am trying to do better about stopping to try it on. Sort of like Angie's shopping more often. Frequently, it won't fit right and so it's an easy out and I never have to wonder. Of course if it looks fab, then I have to go through checking PPP, budget, priority list and so on! On-line is harder since there's so much stuff you could find something to order nearly every day or week and then it may "take root".

Cheer up, something will come along. Maybe it's my sensibility of it's not the end of the world outlook that makes me shop later on in the season. However, I don't get attached to things quickly either so it makes it that much harder to buy stuff.

This is too bad. I'm one of these wait for later shopping types too. Not a good strategy. I hope you'll get one of the last ones or find one similar to this. Good luck!
