I like to have a slightly larger wardrobe for this reason--when you discover some problem in the morning, like a hem falling out or something you need hasn't resurfaced from the
laundry pile--I need a back up to get out of the house in the morning. I am working with a really small wardrobe at the moment and I have to remember to do small loads of laundry all the time, which I think is a bit wasteful.

Sounds like a plan, Alecia. The white trousers at BR are GREAT this season. Try them

Angie, you're probably onto something. I could use more work pants. I especially would like a white or off-white straight or narrow legged pant. But I think I'd still face this issue. For example, I'm not going to double up on boots, but I do have to take them into the cobbler from time to time. I do try to do that in the off season, but sometimes can't wait. I really miss them during those times.

I definitely tip towards a larger wardrobe than this - but even then, when a favorite item is in need, it's definitely a bummer.

oh yeah. i discovered this when i started to see ' how small i could go' a couple of years ago. It's even more pronounced for me since it's very very hard for me to get anything off the rack, so i have to sew my own, shop for months, etc. in order to replace even basics.

i just decided that my smallest wardrobe would be larger than i thought, in order to accommodate this. For me, one of my main goals is to have a wardrobe that makes life *easier* day to day. Only having x # of items and never any more is not one of my goals, so it didn't bother me any.

After all, my clothes work for me, not the other way around steph

I hear you.I always try the quick fixes instead of taking them away, like, for example hadn wash the silk blouses although they say dry clean only .

Having to launder more frequently is what makes me not want a really small capsule wardrobe. Still, I wonder how sparse is sparse? I can walk into my closet and see all my clothing and accessories at once. BUT I have a very large walk-in closet, so in reality my wardrobe's not that small I don't think. I refuse to put garments in another closet or store them elsewhere because for me it would be "out of sight, out of mind." I like seeing what I have and deciding what to wear without having to go to several places to do it, LOL!

Oh my goodness, yes!~ I absolutely ADORE being able to see my entire wardrobe in one go, but I'm really struggling to figure out what I'm going to wear to work tomorrow because 1/2 of my pants are in the laundry bin, 1/6 are out at the tailor's, and the remaining 1/3 have already made multiple appearances at work this week. ( I feel like I should end this post with: "solve for X, where X is the number of pants that Charmian owns", heehee! )

Have folks considered duplicating to remove wardrobe bottlenecks, per Angie's suggestion?

I am chuckling because the hem came down on one of my summer dresses today and I decided to quickly tack it up myself rather than take it to the seamstress, precisely because I didn't like the thought of being without it for a week! So I guess the answer is yes!

YES !! I put off repairs because I don't want to part with my clothes. It takes about a week at the tailor. She will do it quicker for a premium. I suppose it would be worth it if you really, really need it.

But I guess in the end, you can just double up on some other pants for the time it takes. But I hear ya !

I am one of the many around here who has learned the joys of a pared down wardrobe. I am now much more likely to wear the peices in my closet than I ever have before. I'm also more likely to feel good when wearing them. The only drawback I've encountered is when something needs repair (or I go a little too long on the laudry). Today the hem of my tan pants started coming out, which means they'll be out of commission until I get them fixed. And, because my wardrobe is small but functional, that will create a hole that I feel when getting dressed. This doesn't deter me from wanting to keep my wardrobe small, but an observation.

Have any of you noticed this phenomena? How do you feel about it?
