Thanks for your kind comment Shannon, and Angie for chiming in.
Anyone else have a story about one-in-one-out?
How successful have you been when trying this? Sometimes it is hard to 'let-go' of items that were costly or time consuming-alterations etc. but I know I would simply run out of space in my closet if I didn't purge as I buy!

Thanks Lyn. I love seeing how people REALLY work their wardrobe and this is a good rule and one which potentially can make you feel bad about getting rid of things. But you are right, like the idea BUT this one doesn't quite make it for me... And as your style slowly changes AND when you are testing new looks out. Thank you for this post!

Lyn and Joy - thanks for sharing - interesting info. I am not really into one in one out at this point - I tend to demote to loungewear instead - but some day I might be!

Thanks Joy, I too seem to be replacing items for more coverage/length/comfort as I grow older and wiser :)
I like your idea of trying new looks in less expensive versions until sure they will work for us.

I'm finding that I like structure in my clothing so am slowly replaceing many of my go-to cardigans with jackets. This means a white cardigan goes out and a white denim jacket moves in.
I'm also replacing dresses and skirts that are above my knees for those with more length. Sheath dresses in coral and turquoise have been given away, but i hope to find replacements next spring.
Many of my camisoles/tank tops for layering are too short for anything but skirts. They need to be replaced with the same item in a longer length. I replace these anyway once a year because they begin to get ratty but my wardrobe can't funcion without them.
Finally, I often try out a new-to-me look with inexpensive or thrifted pieces. If I like it, I start looking for better quality replacements. Examples: skinny jeans, moto jacket, tuxedo jacket

I like the concept of passing on an item when I purchase a new and improved one, except for closet holes of course!
So before I purge these pieces I thought it might be interesting to post the before and after pics.
#1 is a white gathered top bought on sale and well made etc.
Not really worn because it is quite low cut at the front.
Replaced with white T. of similar slinky fabric but more fitted and higher neckline.
#2 Botanical print top with same issue!!
Replaced with more 'grown-up' printed top with short sleeve.
#3 Cotton dress worn a few times and hemmed to shorter length last year but now I am just bored with the dark pattern.
Replaced with a dress with short sleeves I can wear at similar occasions (but haven't worn yet.)

It would be great to hear some of your stories about why you have recycled certain outfits, and what you now wear instead.
