I think things through similarly, especially in regards to upgrades. I really like the olive shorts in #2, but do have a question about whether they truly fill the same roll as the pairs in #1, 3, and 4 which are all quite a lot longer (though still in the same color family). Just a thought!

I think it is great to 'think it through' before making a trip to the stores. This is something I am trying to keep in mind to do, more often. Good luck with your shopping!

I am looking at upgrading my slouchy black pants and I am definitely going to use your thought process. I don't really think through my purchases .... And I should. Thank you for posting this Mo

I absolutely think everything through. When I purge my closet, I make a list of items I want to replace. I go through some questions: Where will I wear the new item? Did I get a lot of wear out of the former item? What do I still have that I will wear it with? What are new design details that I'm looking for?

I am trying not to "settle." When I replace items, the new item must fit exactly the way I want it to, or back it goes.

Yes all the time. I'm always on the outlook for upgrades. Or one item that will replace two or more & improve my wardrobe :) I purged three pairs of simple, straight-legged pants that were fine but meh, nothing wrong with them but too business-y for my life. I replaced them with my harem pants & track pants, which are much more "current" & fun to wear.

Yes, I go through the same thought process, I want to try to evolve with new purchases, rather than repeating even if I'm looking to fill the hole left by something worn out. So for example a short black cardigan with buttons wore out, and I bought a dark ink/navy one with a more modern shape instead after I figured out that it would work with almost all of the same outfits.

FWIW I think the #2 shorts look good on you.

I mentioned in my summer list thread that olive shorts are the only last item to be procured. In my efforts to not be buying just to buy and actually make my purchases count, here is my reasoning.
First I purged my long standing olive capris cum bermudas late fall. They had just stretched out and become unflattering. They lasted near 10 years, so I can't begrudge them their time served lol.
I'm also hoping to purge two less worn items with this one purchase. I keep these items, and do wear them, but would love to update as I feel they make do but aren't the best choice for the role they fill.
Here is my closest approximation to what I want. I have plans tomorrow to go back to the store and see if a size up is available. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....aty-things Even at the slightly shorter than ideal length, I feel they are so much more what I'm looking for to express my style than either the brown cord bermudas or the olive cargo skirt, despite the fact that both are flattering.
Do you think these kinds of things through when looking to upgrade?
