I really like both of those, also. I had put the first one in my Finds but had the same worries about the boiled wool. The other issue with that is that for my climate at least it is likely to be neither here nor there. Too heavy for an indoor jacket, too light for an outdoor jacket for very long.

So the topper that has me most excited at the moment is the EF Funnel Neck cotton jacket. I like it done up AND undone. Cotton looks comfy as well. Its a little shorter than what I was thinking but it does have a nice long line to it. The other one that I am interested in is the EF Asymetrical Boiled Wool Jacket. I love the look of it BUT I am usually pretty sensitive with wool and this one is unlined.

AG - one thing this process is showing me is that I need to relook at how I adjust my style. In the past I have just gone out and bought stuff I was thinking of to see if it worked. Then 98% of the time it doesn't work and out it goes. Waste of time and money. So this is one of the first times I actually am going through a mental process to evaluate BEFORE I plunk down any money. So I will probably end up spending more on the item but it will probably be right so actually cheaper. In most of my life, I am a major planner so I wonder why I am not a style planner.

I love this post so thank you, Marlene - it is a process I am going through as well, though much more slowly and haphazardly. I'm trying to find the grown up version of UWP/androgyny without getting too impractical and over budget. You are motivating and inspiring me!

Wow! So much to ponder! Yesterday after I posted, I ran off to play bocce and didn't check in when I returned. So now I am reviewing all the suggestions. First off material...I want something heavier like ponte or a heavier jersey material. I am not opposed to suede or leather as trim. Definitely no silk or other light fabric. I'm not sure if that is a preference thing or practical...it gets chilly here in the fall! Looking at all the pictures, my first instinct is to say no excessive waterfall drape. That is what I am done with. But the open "moto" styles are interesting...asymetric drape. That seems to be more what I am after. It so nice to see options that I hadn't considered yet. It helps me to clarify. Oh one more thing....I am liking the LONG ones. I think that I need something long to cover my rear. Some of the sleeveless ones that are long are very intriguing and an idea I had not even considered. Actually, writing this all out is helping me to get an image clarified in my mind. I have to run to an appointment and I will mull this over some more. I will check in when I get back!

I had not heard of Sarah Pacini! I love that style! I must go explore her website some more!

Inge, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I can't believe what a huge help this has been. I'm looking forward to meeting you at Ingefest next month!

Just stopping by to say I own the BCBG waterfall blazer in beige, and I LOVE it. The fit is fabulous, the fabric feels wonderful, is substantial, and has a lovely architectural drape to it.

Like you, I have removed the drapey front cardigans from my closet and have gravitated towards styles with more structure and architectural drape. The architectural drape jacket is in itself more structured than drapey front cardigans, but I also like to add structure elsewhere in my outfit - even if it's just to scrunch the sleeves and show a bit of arm, or roll my BFs and show a bit of leg.

Reading with great interest. I love the EF look myself but need additional crispness and/or structure. Am trying to figure out how to translate this into reality.

It sounds as if you are coming to some helpful recognitions here. And as always, I love Inge's links!

I just thought of something else. What do you think about Sarah Pacini, Marlene?
A bit more romantic perhaps than EF (and sometimes a touch of boho), but also lots of great drape, layering and asymmetry. Touches of avant-garde as well. The collections are often arty casual and relaxed. Usually plenty of grey and black in the F/W collections too.

Oh and they also have interesting statement jewellery, which, together with hair and shoes, could further elevate the look you are after.

Very exciting - love your focus :)

I agree with Inge, the key is to add some structure to the EF look. The other thing is footwear & hair they can make or break this look imo

This is very exciting, Marlene, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how your style will evolve.

Like Sandy, I was also thinking of more substantial fabrics and/or fabrics that have some drape in them but aren't "regular" cardigans.
For example, in addition to sweatshirt material (and knitted jackets and blazers in general):

- silk

- "parachute" fabric

- ponte knit

- boiled wool

- suede

- crepe de chine

- cupro

- very soft, supple (thinner) leather

- scuba-like material

- lyocell and heavier jersey material
- mixed-media pieces with leather/suede... (= built-in structure)

I also associate Eileen Fisher with asymmetric detailing.

I had a look at the EF website and really like these. Are these silhouettes you see working for your new style direction, Marlene? Perhaps you can link to other EF items you are really digging.

Frannie - I actually put them in the storage drawer next to my boot cut jeans...i suspect I may want them again in the future so I'm not ready for them to go in the "definitely leaving" box! I always regret getting rid of workhorses just because I got tired of them They can hang out there for a bit and then I will see if I miss them

SandyG - I am on the same page! I was thinking maybe a super-long boyfriend jacket...long like a topper but still relaxed. But I like the idea of sweatshirt knit. That way its still "drapey" but has some structure. I am struggling to find that balance between structured and drapey. Something a little arty. Now, where to find such a thing! Could this be my unicorn?

What about a boyfriend jacket made from grey sweatshirt knit, or cashmere for lux? it's a relaxed and comfortable look, with a little more structure than your drapey cardigans.

I will be following because I am also working on what my style is - I to love the texture and architectural look of EF pieces, so would love to know what that style is called.
Be careful about getting rid of all you drapey cardi's. I love a structured topper and last year I drifted away from them and then This year I am back in love with them and realizing they are little bit of my true north in clothing.
Maybe with the toppers pack them up and put them in a hold bin.

So last week I started a conversation about how I was overwhelmed with all the choice available for today's styles. What came out of it were several very insightful responses...one of which resonated with me and spurred me onto this next stage of my style evolution. What I need to do is some hard work on determining what "me" is and using that information to be able to edit down the choices available and choose the stuff that is "me" going forward.

So I was looking at some photos of myself and noticing that I like having some sort of topper. What I also noticed is that I have been wearing those drapey front cardigans pretty solidly the past 2 years or so. I jumped on the drapey cardi trend very early and went all in....there are 5 drapey cardis in the closet. Now I am realizing I and done with drapey cardis. I just feel like I have worked my way through that trend and I am ready to move onto the next thing. So I took the drapey cardis out of the closet. I now have 5 hangers ready for new toppers. But what will they be?

Some things I am observing about my style:
1) I prefer black/white/gray
2) While i like drapey, I think I am evolving more towards architectural drape. That is a new concept for me and I like it.
3) I prefer casual clothes
4) I prefer arty-architectural styles. I am super obsessed with looking at the Eileen Fisher website right now. I am loving the new fall line! What does one call the EF look?

I may go into my closet and remove anything that is not heading down the EF road and see what is left. I think I have already been heading that way without realizing it. OK. So it looks like I have just given myself some more homework!

I am hoping that others that enjoy this sort of style can provide some input on how to achieve that look. I am really hoping some power shoppers can point me to the way of finding this new replacement topper that will suit my style....this style that I am still trying to define.
