It's only that I realized after writing that the term "castle" can have quite different images associated with it. And in this case it's less Neuschwanstein and more the small local neighborhood castle. With folding tables and benches, walking around in the woods and a bonfire... I mostly mentioned the place because I realized that I will probably need to keep my jacket on most of the time. So it's definitely important to get it right!</p> <p>Thanks Angie! Now that I can afford to spend more on shoes I don't have to always go with the safe choice (of black). And I definitely prefer light shoes with bare legs - the shoes were also available in black, but I didn't even think about it. :)</p> <p>Thanks Viva! If you are invited to a party in/at a castle here, this is usually a rather formal event, unless you are told otherwise. In YOUR part of Europe it may be different, but generally speaking, people seem to be more formally dressed in Central Europe than in Scandinavia. That's why I was surprised you would wear a denim jacket to a wedding in a castle.</p> <p>When I think about it, I actually remember to have seen some German castles that looked like rather rustic places. I wore a summer dress, sandals and denim jacket to a wedding a couple years ago. I ended up not needing the jacket because it was so hot, but the outfit was the right balance between dressy and casual. There were women in silk dresses, and men in blue jeans. I do think it would be completely fine to wear it - first off we Europeans seem to treat weddings differently to Americans anyway (no bridesmaids, no color coordinated dressing or anything like that, at least for most people). And the location is fairly rustic (a castle on a hill), so my friend told me to wear sensible shoes. Which I would do in any case. I guess it might not bee too warm inside, so I would probably keep the jacket on most of the time - so it might be worth considering something more dressy all the same. But I don't want to spend lots of money on it. I have been to plenty of weddings and seen plenty of denim. Some very good looking denim worn with panache, but also sad, saggy, not-even-trying denim. The wording on this invitation seems to project that either kind would be welcome. On the one hand, you'd hate avoid the denim even though you really want to wear it, get there, and see all sorts of sharp-looking denim jackets, and think, "Damn, I coulda worn mine." On the other, it also wouldn't hurt to have this look in the bag for going out to dinner, and jazz it up a tad more with a fancier topper.
