It's interesting how certain items -- sneakers, blue jeans, leather jackets, etc. -- enter the popular style lexicon and have never left. The meanings of so many items have completely changed over time. Does this mean appropriation? I don't think so.

My first leather jacket was grey and sort of a cropped blazer style -- I can't remember if I was a senior in high school or a freshman in college when I bought it, but my love for leather jackets was obviously established at a young age and has never waned. I added a taupe suede bomber not long after that, which i also loved. Funny that I can remember those clothes so clearly. Also interesting that I did not start on the leather jacket train with a traditional black leather moto, as most do. But I had a boyfriend in college who had a thoroughly beat up black leather jacket and I secretly wanted to steal it from him when we broke up. ;-)

When items become mainstream, they often lose what they meant originally. The early adopters of trends worn by people of less means are often considered cool, but how cool are hoodies now? But when we add something new to our wardrobe, it adds something to our aesthetic and can help expand our vision of ourselves.

Both as individuals and as a group, fashion changes. 70's hippy to 2016 boho, etc. When women first started wearing pants. Etc. Appropriation? Appreciation? I don't know if it is an issue politically. I just like wearing new to me things. And stretching my clothing boundaries. A little. :)

Exactly. What is authentic? What is aspirational? And if you buy it are you there or masquerading?

Fascinating read... For me it speaks to the idea of authenticity and whether it can be bought.

When I was in college, I really wanted a leather jacket, inspired by a friend (a skinny guy) who had a Schott jacket that made him look subversive and preppy, both of which he indeed was. My parents agreed to fund what was then an expensive one for my Christmas present and I looked but never found the one I wanted. A few years later I got married and when I felt leather jacket-y I borrowed one my husband bought on Carnaby Street in London at some point in the 80s. And I kind of gave up on finding my own, until a year or two ago when I started to find more feminine ones that I like at Rebecca Taylor and Allsaints. I didn't think there were meanings in such jackets though, but I guess someone else thinks so, based on this piece from Racked: <http://www.racked.com/2016/9/6.....er-jackets>
