Thanks for the lipstick rec. I've been looking for a soft corally pink shade for a while. Will have to give this one a try.

Also, for those who think they may be a Soft Summer, I have heard Rimmel's Vintage Pink is a good Soft Summer colour (if you want something to compare with). It comes up a little bit too purpley on me (I think I may be either a Soft Autumn or a Bright Spring though), but it is a perfect match to my mom's lips, who I suspect is a Soft Summer. Just FYI.

When I found out our drugstore will take makeup back if you try it and it's not the right color, I decided to find the Revlon Preview (Soft Summer) lippie. I must say it's wearable and not bad, but not as natural looking as the Revlon Blushing Mauve (Soft Autumn). I immediately wiped it off because I was a little uncomfortable with the way it looked; just thought it was a wee bit too cool.
It's like it the color sits on top instead of blending in, if that makes sense. Also, I know I can't wear that color blush. Been there, done that, figured out it's not my best look.

I guess I'm a Soft Autumn after all--at least according to the Truth is Beauty website, which I believe bases the color recommendations on the Sci-Art system. ???

I'm anxious to know how others' lipstick draping goes! This is enlightening.

Thanks, ClearlyClaire. Your pic looks different than what I saw elsewhere online, so I'm going to try to find it. I'd like to try it for comparison. Knowing my luck, it'll look equally as good on me as the Soft Autumn lippie. I always find myself stuck between the 2 palettes.

When I got home last night and removed my makeup, I tried the Revlon blushing mauve color again, except only on my bottom lip,. I then walked over to the window and checked in natural daylight to make doubly sure the color blended with my natural lip color. It absolutely did.

One I always use, and swear by, is Clinique Almost Lipstick in "black honey." I don't know what season that lippie belongs to, but it looks great on me.

Well I was just out picking my blazer up from the tailors (it turned out great!) and stopped by the drug store and bought Revlon Colorstay Lipstick in Review. I really like it! It was nice to apply and you can hardly tell I'm wearing any lipstick, it just looks polished. Thanks Ruth! Here's what my Soft Summer shade looks like.

This looks like a very useful exercise, but I haven't tried it. I used to think I was a Soft Autumn until 10 day ago when I was professionally draped and identified as a Bright Spring! So, I know how frustrating the search for your "right" colors can be on your own.

When I thought I was a Soft Autumn I wore Nars Dolce Vita (like Janet said, it's a great neutral color) a lot.

Irene, like you, coral is my best lip color. So bright! I'm still getting used to it.

I think I am a True Spring (with really dark eyebrows :(). Coral is the lipstick color that looks best on me (I used to wear mauves but they clashed against my yellowish undertones).

Very interesting -- thanks for sharing that link!

I don't care for bright or bold colors on my lips, but I think it's more because of my facial features than my coloring. I can see how some colors might be nice on my skin, but overpowering on my lips (I have relatively large features on a relatively small face, I think that's why). So I probably go more muted than the shades that would be recommended for me. My favorites are Mac Sophisto (1) and Nars Dolce Vita (2).

It was interesting to look at the categories, however. I think I'm either a True Summer or a True Winter -- I really can't tell, honestly. To my eye, my coloring looks very similar to both Deschanel sisters, but they have them categorized in two different seasons (Emily - Summer, Zoey - Winter).

This is cool. I'm not sure what my season is but by looking at the pics, I'm guessing Autumn--maybe winter (although the lipstick colors are rather bright.) I've been having no luck with lipstick lately--all the wrong colors so I'm going to give a couple of these a try. Thanks for posting :)

Here's what the Revlon "blushing mauve" lipstick looks like IRL. It looks the same on me as it does on this girl. The mauve I think of is a cooler color than this. Just scroll down and you'll see the pic.

@ClearlyClaire: You're right that names can be deceiving. On my lips, this shade does not look like mauve. It looks more like a warm pink or something along that line.

Also, scroll down and see what the site says about your best/worst colors. That's pretty accurate, too, IMO.

I'd say this sounds pretty accurate. I don't have these exact lipstick shades, but I have very similar ones to the Deep Autumn and Deep Winter picks. My coloring is somewhere in between the two and varies depending on how tan I am and how red my hair is. Anyway, I like brownish raisiny tones for a more natural color (it's quite similar to my natural lip color), which is what they recommend for Deep Autumns, and I choose plums and muddy berries for a more dramatic look (which is Deep Winter).

Thanks for this Ruth! How nice that someone has done all the legwork with the make-up shades. Their names can be so deceiving. For instance, I never would have thought to put a Soft Autumn in a "mauve" lipstick. I'm going to try the (cheap) one for Soft Summer and see how it looks. Thanks!

Has anyone done this? I decided I had to try to break the SSu/SAu tie once and for all (see my thread about rethinking my best color palette) by trying the lipstick draping test found here:

http://www.truth-is-beauty.com.....e-you.html

I had a $5 coupon for my local drugstore, and it's like cash--you can use it on whatever you want. I bought the Revlon "blushing mauve" lipstick recommended for Soft Autumn. I wanted to buy the one for Soft Summer as well, but couldn't find it. Anyhoo, one look at that color made me think it was the right one. I got back to the office and tried it. Voile! Perfect match for my lips. Based on the way the Soft Summer lipstick looks online, I think it would be too cool. I've tried similar colors in the past, and none ever looked quite right if you know what I mean.
