Ornella, your lesson is a good one, because it gives me more to reflect on and I think bringing it down to "fit" is accurate. I like what Vildy added here and think Angie's flawless fit makes everything work so well, from the freedom of movement in all of Amgie's outfits to her polished look after long days at NYFW. Angie's fabrics and her attention to detail added to this, too. But, overall, I would have to agree that fit is #1 on the list. Like Shevia, I am also becoming more aware of what the fashion world has to offer.

Agree completely that fit is one of the most important lessons learned from hanging around YLF. I also love Angie's outfit posts the most, but will say I am learning to appreciate the coverage of the shows more and more, in great measure due to Angie's description of her "read" on what she sees. This is a great accomplishment for someone who honestly could not understand the interest or point of fashion shows one little bit when she was younger.

Yes! And Angie's outfits were the highlight for me too.

I'm just trying to get my head around not having things too tight. I'm good at rejecting too-big things, but stretch fabrics have enabled my small waist/bust and larger hips/seat to wear a lot of things I couldn't years ago without looking like I was in a sack. Now I'm thinking to upgrade my fussiness to sizing up and getting more things altered. I wouldn't have bothered if not for seeing fussy (in a good way) ladies here critique straining/distorted seams etc. I used to think a little tight was better than too loose, but now I want to get it just right.

My favorite part of the NYFW coverage was Angie's outfits too. They're all so well thought out and inspiring. I can't imagine a cuter model :)

It's not just the impeccable fit I notice though. It's how perfectly maintained all of her clothes are. I'd be shocked if Angie showed us an outfit with unsightly wrinkles, pilled tops, sloppy hems or scuffed shoes.

I need to clean up my act!

Fit was one of the first things I learned at YLF. That and that often you have to get items tailored. Now I don't think twice about paying for: hems shortened or lengthened, pockets sewn closed (especially when they are on the sides of my hips), shortening sleeves on blazers. These tweaks have really made me feel better about my clothes.

Proper fit is one of the first things I notice with Angie's outfits, the fit is always spot on, and second is the contrast. If it's a boxy blouse it's usually a tighter bottom. I like contrasts in outfits. For Angie's fashion week outfits I often noticed contrast with the soft sweater against a crisp button down shirt, or a form fitting dress. A fun look!

I couldn't tell you a percentage, Girl X. But I do not mess around or think twice when it comes to effective alterations:

- I have many of my jeans taken in at the waistband. I'd say at least half of the pairs in my closet have had waistband adjustments because I have a sway back.

- Occasionally I fiddle with a dress or skirt length, making it longer or shorter.

- Formal wear almost always requires alteration. It has to fit 100%.

- Sometimes, I re-sew the buttons on coats and jackets so that they fit perfectly around my upper body.

- I don't need to have trousers or sleeves hemmed. Certain brands of clothing tend to fit straight off the rack and I buy quite a lot of those brands.

- I love boxy soft blouses and they don't need to have a snug fit so I am off the hook!

- I will never buy a coat or jacket unless it fits my shoulders in precisely the right way. But as I said earlier, I am happy to adjust the alignment of the buttons.

Oh gosh, thanks, Ornella (*blushing*). And Vildy, your musings are always so interesting. You really do have a gift with words.

I think that "perfect fit" becomes especially important when you have specific style goals. For example, if you are on Team Polished - it's a no brainer. If you strive to look elegant, dressy, chic, crisp, sophisticated, minimal and lady-like - perfect fit is an important aspect to creating that vibe.

However, "perfect fit" becomes less important (but of course still important in order for garments to look somewhat attractive) when you'd rather strive to look arty, edgy, retro, vintage, bohemian, maximal, casual and RATE.

I hope that makes sense.

Ornella, you have a great eye for perfect fit, and this comes through loud and clear in your style. You are there

I also can add a confession here that Angie's outfits from NYFW have much more impression on me than the shows and they are the posts I anticipated the most!

Hear, hear - you are so right. It's a lesson we can all learn, over and over it seems! I just took in a blouse for alterations. I've had it for a couple of years, and wore it rarely because the back seemed a bit big. Now it's altered to fit me and I love it!

Ornella you are right on the mark. I have been thinking about all the items I've acquired that I loved but now don't seem quite right and the common denominator is the fit is just not perfect. Watching Angie in person adjusting each item on people really made me think about how I assess clothing.

She does have it down to perfection.

I'll go a step further and say it's not just how each piece fits her but that whenever and however she moves, none of it interferes with each other. I think that contributes to how natural she looks in her clothes, even though they are thought out and highly styled.

...does not come from any of the shows, nor is news at all. It comes from Angie's outfits. It was obvious before, of course, but somehow it really stood out this tome:
