I love this description! This isn't my style, but it's almost a perfect description of my sister's style. I'm going to cut and paste this to send to her. I think she'll love it.

Thanks so much for all the great comments! It's exciting to see that we all have our own unique style, even within one umbrella style - my "Earthy" is different from ManidipaM's or VelvetyChocolate's. And that's great!

I think what's important is that we each find descriptors that resonate. I intend to use these words as a guide when I go shopping and when I put together outfits. It's already helping - I've realized I'm lacking in "chic" and would like to put more attention there.

Also, this is very much a work-in-progress, which may be fine-tuned. Perhaps I will realize that "Earthy" is not quite right, or that "Chic" is a reach - but that's fine. For me, this has been a great way to nudge me out of my paralysis and start moving forward!

This is so interesting to read!

I'm thinking of 'earthy' as one of my style adjectives, yet I tend to understand it more in terms of fabrication, materials, texture, even shape/weight than colour. In fact, I eschew 'earth colours' almost entirely (what VC said there, though I suspect the 'earthy' palette always will eschew the tropical or Nordic palettes --- I think 'earthy' is different from simply being nature-inspired in that it is typically of a temperate Nature!). Which is only to say I am a different 'earthy' from you, and possibly that's true of VC as well.

Intriguingly, the 'earthy' palette actually dovetails quite neatly with the 'urban neutrals' palette too, I think. (I was just saying over on Astrid's 'country' thread that possibly 'earthy/organic' is not a contrast/opposition to 'urban'...)

I'm with Pil - I like this a whole lot! While I don't always go for the traditionally "earthy" colours, I'm very drawn to colours that are inspired by nature. Meanwhile, this doesn't necessarily mean a lot of browns or tans for me, since those kinds of traditionally 'earthy' colours don't always work well with my colouring. Thing is, I notice that I am drawn to colours that look like they could happen in nature. Blue with white is the ocean. Black, white/cream and grey is winter.

In terms of colour - if it's something that looks like it happens in nature, then I love it. This includes raspberry/fuschia tones, as if they're rhodedenrons, yellow if that means lemons or buttercup flowers, lime green ...looking like actual limes on a tree. Black and white are zebras. Not that I'd wear anything zebra-printed, mind you - but just saying that black and white together really does happen in nature.

Something like ink blue paired with black - it's the night sky against the black rocks on a cliff at the side of the ocean. Matte silver accessories are the stars, pearls or a soft ivory scarf are the moon. Likewise, you might see a pink-ish colour and a softer green in the form of a lily pad floating on a serene lake. To me, "earthy" doesn't mean just the typical earth tones that most people think of when pondering the idea of "earthy" - or am I a bit weird for thinking of all the beautiful colours that really do happen in nature?

Meanwhile, can I just say that you've done an amazing job at articulating Earthy Urban Chic? I've never even attempted to try and describe a style that I like or that fits me, and yet - your post is resonating beautifully - thank you!!

Tarzy, I've been attempting to ponder my style description, such as it is, and I think you may have just done all of the work for me! I'm not so sure about my wardrobe fitting the color parameters you've come up with, but unless I've totally missed the boat everything else you've come up with really hits the nail on the head for me!

Misia - I loved those boots in black, but I felt they would overpower the rest of my wardrobe since I don't wear black. When I saw the brown, I felt they retained some of the edge, but in a softer way. Very EUC!

MNSara - that's hysterical! At 55, I hope I'm in Excellent Used Condition!

I agree that you there's room to increase 'chic' a little, but I also think that chicness can come from 'fit' and the way you carry yourself. (If that makes any sense. . . )

There must be style crossover elements (to whatever my style might be) cause we are chalk leather jacket twins and I wouldn't peg myself as EUC, because of the earthy part. I'm Earthy -friendly though, and love a good olive drab :-)

P.S. EUC is Ebay/want-ad speak for Excellent Used Condition . . .hmmmm

I'm exploring a new style group proposed by Angie - Earthy Urban Chic.
Anyone care to join me?

First order of business: define our goals. Bear with me as I think out loud -

EUC is -

EARTHY: Our style takes its color cue from nature. We leave black and shiny chrome to our kick-ass UWP sisters, and opt for warm and rich colors - browns, tans, teals, moss greens, stone greys, warm pinks, bronze. Nothing too bright or shiny, nothing eye-searing. We prefer our colors to blend in a subtle, easy way - no harsh contrasts.

URBAN: Although we have that element of nature, we can be city girls (even if we live in the country.) We like to be current, but not a slave to trends. We like to be modern, as long as the lines aren't too stark.

CHIC: We are not boho. We are not overly flowy. We prefer solids, or very subtle, classic prints. We like things simple and elegant - as long as they're not stuffy. We love clean lines - as long as we don't have to fuss with them. We love elegance - as long as it's comfortable.

EUC is a bit of a contradiction. That's our constant challenge - to find the perfect mix:

- a little structured, but not severe
- a little luxurious, but not ostentatious
- approachable, but not ordinary
- soft, but not flimsy
- slouchy, but not sloppy
- pretty, but not girlie
- current, with a touch of timeless
- comfortable, without losing style

How does this sound so far?

I think I'm almost there - I just need to step up the "Chic" part a little bit more!

Here's what I would consider a typical EUC look for me:
Hair is natural & curly. Brown tortoise glasses.
Soft colors (tan, brown), comfortable fabrics (denim, cotton sweater). Everything fits pretty well.
(I'll talk about the boots in a separate thread.)
This is a bit lacking in the "chic" quotient though - maybe could use a fabulous handbag?
