For many, many years, Ann Taylor was THE perfect brand for me , fit wise. Though I do think that was an anomaly. I truly believe that it is near impossible to get a "perfect" fit off the rack.

I used to get compliments all the time on how I dressed. Even when I was a young girl. It wasn't until I became and adult that I realized it wasn't the clothes that people commented on but rather the fit. I was very lucky because my mom made all my clothes until I was about 19. And that was the secret. Even today, at 50, my mom ( who is 80 ) still tinkers with almost everything I buy : inexpensive or expensive. The truth is that my clothing budget would be way smaller if I had to pay for all the alterations that my mom has done. Sveta's mom does the same with Sveta's clothes.

I'm thrilled for you! I don't have too many problems finding garments that fit me perfectly right off the rack. I'd say I have the most fit problems with footwear and pants. I have found it important to find stores that carry my size. Size charts aren't the same across the board, so you have to look. At one store a small is size 4-6, while at another it's size 6-8, and the body measurements differ. I always check. Another thing is to find brands that fit your body shape. Some will be more suited to straighter figures, while others will be more for curvy gals.

<happy dance> Love when the start align and this happens!
Perfect fit in a jacket or blazer is a rare animal for me too. In addition to be well above the average height I also have broad shoulders and very narrow back and small bust. If a jacket fits my shoulders usually it has a lot of extra flapping fabric in the chest and upper back. Alterations are my best friend here.
I usually get lucky in Danier (I suspect their model is shaped similarly to me ) I also got lucky with BCBG mixed media blazer I found in the consignment store- need to keep an eye on thisw brand if they "get" me.

Oh, so happy for you finding a perfect fit in an item you also love is such a great feeling! I can relate, as I have trouble with fit particularly bottoms, and have only ever found 2 things I can think of that fit that perfectly.

Wow, that IS a beautiful blazer, Suz. I bet it looks amazing on you. (And yes, I did find my coated jacket partway through the search for leather ones, and yes, it was love at first sight -- and more love when I tried it on and it actually fit!). :-)

Marilyn, sadly I don't sew, but my local tailor knows me very well. :-)

Joy, what part of a jacket is the 'vance'? (I have the same experience sometimes -- of thinking that a coat pulled up a bit by the shoulders would work better)

Shedev, yes, I might do that tomorrow. It's hard to judge a garment by how it looks on a hanger, though.

Summer -- lol -- 'the perfect excuse to hand over cash'

Dimity -- I am petite, and yes, I have lots of success in the petite's department. I always buy petite shirts and blazers. The problem is, it's hard finding 'cool' clothes in petite sizes. Only big department stores stock petite sizes (or Talbot's, BB, and BR), and most of what's there is tailored office wear or 'matronly' items. :-(

I used to find it impossible to get a good fit on a jacket until I decided to try the petites section because I'm short-waisted, not because I'm petite. It's still not easy to get a good fit, but the waist is at least in the right place for me in petites. Boxy fits and jeans/skirts/trousers are much easier for me.

How exciting to find the perfect fitting jacket. I have a very hard time. I am 5'3" so a petite should fit, but my arms are too long and shoulders too wide. Regular sizes can fit the shoulders and arms, but often fit oddly across the bust and are too long in the vance. If I could just pull the jacket up by the shoulders a couple of inches, everything falls into place.
Enjoy your jacket and wear it often.

I got the Reiss ink tuxedo blazer. It is amazing. Pure love. Vivian bought one too. Most expensive purchase of my entire life.

I was imagining you in the store...were you feeling disappointed as you tried leather jacket after leather jacket? And did you find the coated jacket partway through the search?

I have had that feeling of not intending to buy something at all -- and slipping it on and just *knowing* I'd walk away with it. That's what happened with my Danier coat, below. Interestingly, it is also mixed media. In some ways I find that more easy to wear than full on leather.

AZ, I am petite too, and I know exactly what you're talking about. It's practically a miracle to find something with a perfect fit off the rack. I do think that it has to be easier for people who are more in the average height and weight categories, simply because there is so much more clothing available to try. I have often wondered too when I find something that fits well if this is what most "normal" people experience.

Janet, I'm very envious that you can fit jackets easily. I guess I shouldn't complain too much, as I have a (fairly) easy time with jeans -- but even then I often have to get them hemmed!

Day Vies, merwoman -- thanks :-)

LisaP -- you know, I've been a veteran on YLF for a long time, but I am still very, very uncomfortable posting pics (of myself). I've done it two or three times, and I didn't like the feeling. It makes me feel exposed. (If there was a way of guaranteeing that only the lovely ladies of this forum would see them, then I'd be OK with it).

One time I posted a couple of drawings, and I was comfortable with that -- but it takes more time, and time is one thing I don't have a lot of! :-)

Congrats! That sounds like such a satisfying purchase.

I fall into some aspects of that "easy fit" you mention for some tops and jackets at least -- 5'7", average size (6-8 ish), average length arms... So shorter jackets and tops are typically my "easy" items. Even though I have a very asymmetrical body (scoliosis) and some things fit me a little oddly across the back, I find it way easier to get a great jacket fit off the rack than many other people do. I never realized this until seeing how challenging this can be for other women here on YLF. If it makes you all feel any better, pants and dresses and any item that has to accommodate my hips is a much more challenging fit. So when I find pants or jeans or a dress or even a long jacket that work on me without stretchy material or copious altering, I also have that glorious, "this is how the other half lives" feeling.

Suz, where did you eventually end up getting your ink blazer?

I know we all have fit challenges, but I bet if you're between 5'5" and 5'8" and average weight, there are more instances of off-the-rack perfect fit. But correct me if I'm wrong. (I just know it's so very rare for me!)

Oh, joy!!

I think that kind of fit is rare, right off the rack. Do you remember how long it took me to find a navy or ink blazer? I tried a lot of them. I did find one that fit really surprisingly well at BR -- but the styling wasn't what I was after. So the search resumed.

I guess people who are between 5'6 and 5'8 and rectangular shaped may have an easier time, but I'm not even sure about that. We all have fit challenges.

Today I bought a jacket. It wasn't the jacket I had planned to buy. I had Christmas money to spend on a leather jacket but have had no time to look (where does all the time go?). I went to the little boutique where I bought my husband's perfect leather jacket, because they told me they were expecting a shipment of small women's sizes, and as promised, they had lots. I tried on at least six nice biker jackets, but none was just right -- they were either too boxy, or the collar was too asymmetrical and big, or the front was great but there were leather laces on the back (not my thing), or the zippers and studs were just too lavish.

Then I tried on a black waxed canvas jacket, and I had one of those rare moments where I thought, this is made for me. It's styled a bit like a jean jacket with metal buttons and breast flap pockets, but it also has quilted stitching on the shoulders, zip side pockets and leather trim (under the collar, on the cuffs and hem), which is more like a moto jacket. It's definitely not what I had intended to get, but it looks exactly right! A little edge, but not trying too hard, you know? The perfect thing. The shoulders, the arms, across the chest -- if a tailor had taken my measurements, she would have made a garment of these exact dimensions. As an added bonus, it doesn't matter if it gets a bit wet in the rain. :-)

A perfect fit for tailored items is rare for me, and even rarer on a garment that is stylistically right. I get so unreasonably excited when it happens. Is this what it feels like to be a 'normal' size? Or is it rare for everybody?
