Chris, thanks for the pics! I think you might need to size down in these jeans. Shorten the hems, and THEN cuff. The devil is in the details

Thanks slim cat and style fan. The cuffed look is kind of growing on me as I wear these......

Thanks Joy! FYI a lot of Democracy jeans have elastic waistbands, but they are designed like a "regular" waistband just made of stretchy material, so perhaps not as adjustable/flexible as you need. It's part of the "ab solution" technology, I think. Unfortunately there is nothing to indicate this in the online descriptions, at least not in the ones I've seen.

You are an inspiration. I have this sort of hunt ahead of me and wish I could try on in store, but as you said, fitting rooms are closed. The problem is that my glucose meter is a moving target. I must reinsert it in a new place every 10 days. Sometimes a midrise jean will work, mostly not.
An elastic waist is more reliable. There is an over abundance of crops and leggings out their summer styles are lots easier to find.

I'm glad you found some that you like - good old TJMaxx! It's so hard to buy jeans online, the differences in styles and sometimes even fit differences in the same style - so frustrating. Sounds like you have enough to get through a while - enjoy your celebratory drink!

Style Fan, thanks! I know you are not an online shopper - I'm the opposite because things that fit me and are styles I want are just not available in stores. Good to hear confirmation that 7FAM does sometimes run small.

Nemosmom, thanks, it has required a LOT of online shopping...not hte fun stuff of scrolling through pretty shoes but actually reading the descriptions on detail and keeping track. I'm totally ok with eliminating a few brands (like 7FAM) from my radar.

WOW! You have done a lot of work, Chris! Thank you for the update. It is encouraging that the brands that worked for you in the past are working again. 7FAM sizing is weird on me... By the time I size up enough to get my legs to fit comfortably, the waist could hold another person!
Congrats on getting a few new pairs!

I am impressed, Chris!!!! I have been looking for new jeans for a few months and found a grand total of one pair. I don't shop online for lots of reasons, but I am amazed at your success.
I recently tried on many styles of 7 For All Mankind jeans, and I found that I had to sometimes go up in size. Not always, but some in styles and washes.

Thanks slim cat & Jane!

Hah Preppy Pear...I only figured out the criteria with a LOT of trial and error. Yes the Madewell slim boyfriend non high rise is the one I'd try. Too bad there is only one color available. Lucky you to be able to wear high rises - they are so plentiful right now!

Julie I do like a bootcut too but am holding off on those for right now. Because I'm so very short I don't find the proportions of bootcuts always work on me, depending on where the start of the flared part is. The "baby bootcut" is best. They work SO well on taller people IMHO.

Hah DonnaF, sorry to share my fatigue LOL. Yeah, since I only lost enough weight to go down a size trying things a size down seemed a no brainer and it seems to be working.

Suz the Lolita Skinny happens to have exactly the right rise length for me and fits my legs like a slightly loose skinny or a "slim" depending on your definition. . I have muscular legs (and body fat) and wider thighs. Overall all I guess you'd say I have a curvy shape, (as defined by what curvy means in jeans and pants), but my waist to hip ratio is not as big as some curvy styles. They just might work for you although I think you have a straighter figure than I do. I've also noticed (I think) that they sell a low rise version of the Lolita Skinny with a rise around 8" or so.

Angie, ok will do. That's good to know that boden only has a few styles, I had not gotten that far, that would certainly make it easier. Thanks!

I'm pinning this for later. Although I like a little higher rise and don't mind a boot cut, I totally sympathize about the length issue. Why is everything ankle or crop length? I am not especially tall, but I need to wear full length pants for work for safety (no bare skin showing). Finding appropriate pants for warm weather is especially frustrating.

Anyway congrats on finding some winners. You deserve a "break".

I am so impressed at how systematic you are and confident in your criteria! Nice finds! I’ve been shopping for new jeans, too. I am wondering for the Madewell style you are thinking of the slim boyfriend non-high rise style, or are those too relaxed? I like mine a lot but haven’t been wearing them in favor of high-rises.

I'm happy it all gave you enough options ( hopefully ) for the fall and winter wardrobe additions.
Glad Lolita skinny jean from Lucky Brand Jeans worked for you - one of the favorites of my customers at LB ( less skinny than some other styles and a bit curvy in shape ).
Congratulations on job well done - respect.

Update 10/27: Angie asked me to post photos of the Kut jeans in their original unhemmed state before I cut them.....here they are. I do need to take in the back waist. I thought the cuffs made them a little too tomboy for my preferences but now I'm not so sure. I'll wear them this way for a while.

Comments welcome!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Original posting 10/3

As stated previously, I’ve been buying new jeans after getting rid of a bunch that were too big after losing some weight. After donating the
too-big ones I was left with 4 (2 blue, 2 grey) slim/skinny that work with
loafers/sneakers, and 4 (3 blue, 1 black) in a wider/longer leg that work with boots with a small heel. Some of the 8 are borderline too big. I wear jeans daily and although I don’t have a specific quantity in mind that would be just right, I know that this collection is too small.

I’m looking for 9-9 1/2” rise, 29 or +” inseam, slim/straight shape, not destructed, solid wash, minimal whiskering, mostly darker colors. I’ve relaxed my requirements a little and will include a few skinnies.

I’m doing it almost exclusively online. Some vendors have great search capabilities, others do not. It takes orders longer than normal to arrive. Fittings rooms still not open most places. Opening up the package and trying them on is the FASTEST part of the entire process! The trends I see are high rise, “ankle” (inseam length of 27”) or “crops” (even shorter), flares/bootcuts/wide legs, and distressing. The high rise revolution has even made it’s way to fitness/gear leggings…ARGHHH!

I’ve found 5 new ones, and that's enough for now. I 'm exhausted and need a drink...umm... meant to say I need a BREAK :-)

SUCCESSES (see finds) all found at TJmaxx or Macys

4 of the 5 are brands/styles I've worn before. Tried and true for the win!

1882 light wash cuffed crops. I unstitched the cuff and they are full length now. Very thin fabric so won’t work for winter. Similar to the find shown. I mentioned these in my earlier post

Democracy Ab-solution skinnies in indigo. Fit is fabulous. Quite stretchy fabric but substantial. I knew this brand might work because I have bermuda shorts from them.

Democracy Ab-solution straight leg in black. Same fit and similar fabric as the skinnies above. Need to shorten them.

Lucky Brand Lolita Skinnies in a darker wash and one size down from the ones I’ve had for a few years. I can’t believe I found skinny jeans that are well made, fit just right and look GOOD on me! They are sort of halfway between leggings and "slim" jeans as far as leg tightness, just perfect for my not-skinny legs. I may well duplicate in other washes. Will also keep the looser ones that have become more like a “girlfriend” fit. I have had good success with Lucky tops, boots, and jeans.

Kut from the Cloth Catherine Boyfriend jeans. I have one other pair by this brand that are a tad too big. These are the slightly wider leg style. Fit is great. Nice denim. Even with the full cuff, they are full length on me, not cropped as in the photo. I don't really care for that cuff and will shorten them overall.

MORE POSSIBILITIES

Madewell (they had one style that might work)

WHBM (they had 2 options that were sold out in my size last time I checked)

Talbots

LLbean (if they will give me exact rise measurement via chat session, which they have done in the past)

Sliver Jeans brand carried at Macys

Everlane. Haven't looked yet

Boden. They do give rise measurements but you have to look at the detailed measurements for each item separately, there is no way to select all that are “mid rise” for example. I might do this later but for now its way too much work.

and these 2 that cost around $200 but I want to exhaust the less pricey options before I go there…

AG Harper

COS Skyla mid rise cigarette pant

FAILS & BRANDS ELILMINATED

more from TJmaxx that didn't work out (t tharii, republic, kensie)

7 of all mankind (blair) kimmie is out. They run really small so I ended up with the wrong size, but even taking that into account their idea of “straight” leg is way too skinny. I don’t feel like trying to figure out if they have other models called straight leg that are not so skinny

Ann Taylor, Anthro, DL 1961, Loft, Banana Republic, NYDJ out of the running because they don’t have any that meet my requirements.

Old Navy, Target, Eddie Bauer are out because they don’t give exact rise measurements

Warp & Weft is out because the “modern straight”, which could work, only comes in a super dark wash that doesn’t appeal to me.

L&T because they are doing final sales only as they go out of business (SOB!!!)

Nordstrom & Rack because they fired me in June :-)
