We have a sibling with a mental illness and he seems very cheered by our dog. Hubs and I have tossed around getting another pup, training it and giving it to him to make him get up, get outside etc...I figure worst case scenario, we would keep the dog for us. And our dog sits with this relative when he visits, I am sure they have intuition for this.

That's a beautiful story.

A couple of years ago during a rough bout I was seeing a counselor whose dog came to his office. It was such a lift to be greeted by a tiny pup who wanted to show me his toys, and when I was having a particularly hard day, he'd lie with his head in my lap during the session. Great canine therapy.

What a great story. Yes , they have it. And they have it differently from humans. Absolutely. There have been instances of dogs detecting cancer before it could be seen. It is an avenue that is being researched. Have a happy time with your parents.

How lovely for you and your mom. I had a Standard Poodle who always sensed when a visitor was sad and lonely. He would stay at her feet the whole time and be petted.

Brings me back to my mother's two cats who in the last year of her life made sure she was never sitting alone. If one got up the other took over her lap... On her last day as an ambulance came to the house one sat on the coffee table watching everything. When I walked my mother out to the ambulance he followed and waited at the door... The ambulance guys couldn't get over him amongst that chaos... He refused to eat after my mother passed away...

Animals definitely do We had a Boston Terrier when I was a kid, Henry, who LOVED to play tug-of-war. Henry always gauged the physicality of who he was playing with. If it was someone frail or elderly, he would give the toy a polite little tug and let go immediately so they could throw the toy. If they couldn't throw very far, he would make a big show of getting it, and running around like they had thrown it across the yard, then he would bring it back. Henry could be a bit of a show-boater.

If it was one of us kids, we darn near got our arms yanked out of the shoulder sockets for tug-of-war - and he'd give a hard rat-shake for good measure. And he would make you chase him for a bit before bringing the toy back.

When our youngest daughter had appendicitis and came home from hospital (24 hours after surgery), our two goldens were incredibly gentle with and hovered very protectively around her. My husband and I were truly amazed at their very different behavior as she was recovering.

Viva, Oh yes they do know...They have such a beautiful, innate sense of what is going on in the world around them...Dogs are the best that life has to offer..They are the kindest, most forgiving, most intuitive...We humans have a long trip to make to become even a fraction as wonderful as our dogs...
Dogs far out source humans in every facet of life..
And they understand...They understand...They understand...

My parents arrived last night for their three-week stay. They've been here before, many times, and I knew my dogs would be excited to see them. The little one, Koda, of course jumped all over my Dad especially, and Chandler, the black one, also was happy to say hello. Then Koda went off to do his own thing (typical terrier).

But Channy followed my parents into their room while we unpacked their bags. He just sort of hung around very quietly, walking between my parents and gently sussing things out. When my mom, who has dementia, sat down on the couch, Channy went and sat next to her silently and was very still the whole time she sat there, letting himself be petted but never begging for it or bothering her, just being there for her until we left her to go to sleep.

They do know, don't they?
