Jill -- "I could probably found an orphanage" -- LOL

Brie, I have no idea about linen and tweed together. I would imagine yes, but I'm the wrong person to ask!

Suz, sometimes when things are on deep enough discount, then it's a fun gamble. It's a pretty skirt.

Sally, I had a pair of nearly-orphaned tall boots that were rescued by the right pair of jeans -- jeggings, actually. I thought I was done with jeggings, and in truth I find looser jeans more appealing, but there are some things you just need tight stretchy jeans for!

I have had a couple of orphans recently because I have not had the right jeans to wear - I rectified that I hope in the weekend. I have about four tops that I only wear with jeans. I did have jeans, just no straight which was what I wanted.

I have a cream linen skirt worn once when DD was about 4 years old with a top that I never should have owned. I had not worn the skirt again until this year - and she's 16 -- but it took the purchase of a blouse, topper and shoes... And I'm still not sure about it! (is it ok to wear linen with tweed?)

Thanks, Elisabeth. I have worn it more than once!

Now trembling lest I've just purchased another orphan. I bought (on major major sale) a skirt from J. Crew.

I think I have a bunch of tops that should work with it. But what if I am wrong?

BC -- me too! I haven't purchased an orphan for a few years now. I have learned to be very careful when buying skirts in particular -- I've made lots of mistakes there! :-)

Believe me, I get it. I have bought things that end up being orphaned. I just try not to, lol.

BC, I agree about only buying things that go with the stuff you already have in your closet (or else buying two things at the same time that go together). I learned this from YLF, and have tried to stick to it. But I bought those pants before YLF, and I didn't realize right away that they were going to be orphaned. Then I liked them too much to get rid of them -- I kept thinking, there must be a way I can make these work! They should work for my largely casual lifestyle.

What a great save! Doesn't it feel great to shop our closets and find old items that go to new use?

My vintage black Biba kimono is one of those. I bought it during my first months on YLF but had no idea how to wear it. Then came the kimono trend and I figured out it is a perfect summer topper for dressy events or with jeans! It doesn't wrinkle, packs really well, and does a super job of warding off AC. No longer orphaned.

I must confess I'm not that good at deorphaning an item. Because of this, I try to buy something only if I already have things in my closet that I can use to make a complete outfit. Sometimes, though, I'll keep something if the only thing missing is the right pair of shoes. Even with my extremely fussy feet, I can usually find shoes that work well with what I want to wear.

Angie has talked about this many times -- that is, how a garment can get orphaned if you don't have the right clothes and/or footwear to wear with it. I'm thinking about this today because I'm wearing something that had been hiding, unworn, in my closet from before I joined YLF way back when. They are LuLuLemon culottes, made from some kind of stretchy yoga-pants cotton blend, which means they are very casual. I originally bought them because I loved the colour (a dark chocolate brown) and the cute ties near the hemline, but it didn't take long before I realized that they are a stumpifying mid-calf length. This problem would have been solvable with heels, but I didn't have any heels that seemed casual enough. Plus, all my casual tops seemed to cling awkwardly to the roll-down waistline, even if they were drapey.

But a few months ago I found a great drapey charcoal top with an interesting uneven hem that I've been wearing with jeans. Today it occurred to me to try it on with my yoga culottes, and it works! It falls nicely without "grabbing" the waist fabric. And because there is low contrast between the colour of the top and the pants, it's less stumpifying. Plus last year I finally acquired a pair of low wedges, which give just enough lift to fix the proportions, while at the same time being casual enough for the outfit. Problem solved!

If you have a story involving the de-orphaning of a clothing item, I'd love to hear it.
