Sterling- Kudos to you for keeping your cool in a stressful situation.

Try contacting the American Sewing Guild in your city. They should be able to help you find someone to duplicate your blouse. Stretch silk can be pretty tricky to sew, it might not be the best project for re-entry to sewing :).

Mood Fabrics & B&J Fabrics should have good quality stretch silks.

I have had great luck with finding replacements on Poshmark - I love that site! I have also found things by typing the item number from the tag into google - it found sites where the item was still being sold. Good luck! It is so heartbreaking when a well loved favorite is ruined

Efbgen -- Thank you for posting. My Mother was a seamstress extraordinaire. People came from all around the city to take advantage of her skills.

I was raised in that environment. She taught me to sew when I was teenage girl. Those skills are a very, very distant memory. You have inspired me to resume sewing. A lot of what I once knew will have to be relearned. But your sewing advice and Jennifer's recommendation of Mood Fabrics have deeply inspired me.

Relearning this skill would honor my Mother and I have been feeling the need to do just that recently.

First I am happy the Interview went well.
Now about the blouse: when silk starts shredding it is not a good sign. All fabric breaks down eventually but silk sooner than most. The idea to turn it into sleeveless might work if armholes size will allow. Otherwise I agree the best option is to deconstruct the shirt and use it for pattern pieces. I have done that a couple of times- but gently hand wash it before you deconstruct so you don’t wash out any sewing lines after- then get what seamstresses in US call “Swedish pattern paper” . It is sewable paper for this ( and other purposes) which you can order from Amazon or sewing supply catalogs. Trace pieces with sewing lines, darts and matching points.
If you don’t sew a friend that does or a school’s home ec dept might help.
Keep the original fabric to hunt for like type “hand” quality and characteristics.
And of course check out all places for exact replacements - but remember........
the blouse is just a blouse- the confidence you felt in it was all YOU!
Best of luck

Good luck finding the perfect fabric for the remake.

If it’s any consolation, a few years ago, at my highest weight, I realized I didn’t have any casual summer pants. Or any pants. I found a pair of straight-legged pants, olive background with bold black & white leaf print, that I loved. First time I’ve ever liked an elastic waistband. They were so easy to wear with...anything, it seemed like. Pull them on with a t shirt or tank top, add a necklace, and boom! I was dressed. They got a lot of wear until one day, walking into the coffee shop, I noticed one leg swinging forward “that’s odd” I thought, “they aren’t palazzo/boot cut pants”. Standing in line for my order, it hit me. It being cold air from the ac, blowing onto my leg. The seam was gone, all the way down one leg, right up to my hip!

Rip to your miracle blouse.

Sterling, while you are waiting to find a perfect new blouse or the identical blouse on ebay, or arranging to have it copied by a tailor, you might look for some lightweight fusible patching material: place the fusible patch (cut to size & shape of the tear) on an ironing board, fusible side up, and slip the blouse over it, lining up the tear with the patch. Close the tear carefully over the patch and press an iron (the wool setting will probably work best) over it, holding it for a moment until the patch fuses completely to the blouse fabric. This could get you several more wears until the proper replacement appears. Good luck!

Stretch silk is HEAVEN to me and truly a miracle fabric. WHY ISN'T IT EVERYWHERE?! It's actually tougher than you'd think to find it in fabric stores in anything non-bridal but good luck if you go that direction.

However, I find once silk tears like that it's a goner. RIP, Sterling's blouse.

I have the same blouse as Suz and chopped it to bralette length this year to wear under sleeveless dresses since I'm not much of a button-up woman. I did see it on eBay so definitely check there, Poshmark, etc for similar or even the same blouse.

I got a stretch silk s/s top off Poshmark from Elie Tahari and that's definitely a brand to check; also BCBG Max Azria and DVF.

The also-RIP Nordstrom house brand, Classiques, had a line of mostly-silk stretch mesh tops I also loved. When they snag it's over...but shhhh, I wear mine for personal travel. IIRC they did stretch silk blouses, too.

ETA ancient blue stretch silk blouse-turned-bralette-y length top!

If you can't find its duplicate, have a tailor recreate it in a similar fabric.

I have a friend who did that for a blouse of a certain age that she adores. That blouse fit her to perfection, and no other came close to it. So my friend has had a tailor duplicate it twice, and I can't tell which of the three is the original.

Oh, that is so sad. I am hoping it is possible to repair it. But if not -- perhaps it can be made into a sleeveless top. It won't be the same but you won't lose it. And meanwhile, check ebay, as Diana suggested.

Congratulations on keeping your cool in what must have been an awfully nerve wracking situation!

Also, I know what you mean -- I bought an AT stretch silk blouse around the same time that I ADORE and baby the heck out of. It is a winter item only (silk satin and a bit warm for my hot, not air conditioned summers) so that extends its lifetime but I will be devastated when I have to retire it.

Have you tried looking on eBay? I’ve found years old replacement items there on occasion, although patience is required. Sometimes they’re even new old stock.

Sterling, if it indeed under the arm and the silk fabric split, it might be repairable by a good tailor. An inside patch, or some sort of reinforcement may be possible.

Good luck!
