My family on my dad's side has New England roots (Greenwich CT) and is full of avid sailors. I have an aunt who lives on Cape Cod, though most of my immediate family is no longer coastal, having opted for lakes over the ocean. The Reds are the *one* part of the nautical-prep get-up that I've never seen any of my male relatives sport. The Lacoste polos and the Sperry Topsiders (especially back in the 80s and 90s, on my uncles and grandfather -- not so much my dad) were big, but the pink pants seem to be where the line is drawn.

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

I remember a similar book with advice on "how to look rich" (containing statements like "the most polite thing in the world is to be rich"). Part of the advice for men, was an urge to buy pants in a very specific red colour, and readers were told that these pants were available only in one shop, which was situated in some remote place in England and would be open only two months of the year.

I'm a southerner and have never lived north of the Mason-Dixon line, but nantucket reds are not uncommon here. They do tend to be found nearer to the coast, particularly in the sailing community. I like them, but while DH is a lifelong wearer of bowties and navy blazers, I'm not sure he'd be up for pink pants. He'd rather wear seersucker.

La Pedestrienne, how timely ! I was just in a Vineyard Vines store the other day. This look is HUGE in my area. We live very close to Cape Cod and a short boat ride to the Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. This is also huge in Newport, RI and the wealthier seacoast towns of CT and RI. I HATED this look when I was growing up. I grew up in a mill town and whenever our high school teams played Cape Cod teams or teams from the islands, the entire other side of the field was a SEA of this type of dressing. LOL Kelly green and pink pants with whales , dogs, horses all over them ( the men ) , shorts suits...and it just keeps getting bigger out here. But now I live in a tri town area near the coast where people around me dress like this.
For the record, I would totally wear the patch work and rose blazers with a totally black outfit. But my husband would not. LOL Welcome to my world.

Fascinating! I LOVED that preppy handbook although I never really dressed that way. I remember the first time I went to Nantucket years ago as a weekend visitor I was surprised to see that men really did wear navy belts with Kelly green whales on them. Too funny. Yankee Magazine occasionally does a modern version of this sort of satire, with "what to wear to the mailbox in winter" - LLBean plaid shirt, PJ bottoms stuffed into LLBean boots, fur lined hat with ear flaps, or something like that....they are pretty funny.

My ancestors here in NE were very blue-collar so no one would have dressed like that and I'm sure my brothers would rather die than wear Nantucket Red anything.

I knew many of the bits and pieces of the Nantucket Red story but had never heard it all put together. I have a baseball cap I bought on Block Island years ago that has the shape of the island on the front in black and no other detail. I always wondered what to call the color. Now I know that it is Nantucket Red!

I remember that book! It was a hilarious introduction to "preppy style" for a girl growing up in the ranching country of the Northern Rockies. It inspired a local parody--An Official Guide to Stampede Wear. The local version included tips such as the following:

Never tuck your jeans into your cowboy boots
Never wear your cowboy hat tilted to the back of your head.
Only wear a large belt buckle if you won it at a rodeo--and, in that case, the larger the better!
A string bolero is the only tie ever worn with a yoked, western shirt.
Wranglers, not Levi's, are cowboy jeans.

For the record, those of us growing up in the western foothills could never envision any male actually wearing those pink trousers, even if the Guide insisted it was so.

Because I am ancient (62), I very much remember one of the best semi-satirical books ever -- The Official Preppy Handbook. It came out in 1980 and was written by Lisa Birnbach. As I remember, there was a lot of copy devoted to Nantucket Reds. It's a seriously hilarious book, made even more funny to me because I've always leaned toward the classic/preppy/sorority look. Lots of jokes about LLBean boots, fair isle sweaters, color combinations like pink and green, and layers of shirts (turtleneck, turned up; LaCoste Izod polo shirt, collar popped; buttton front oxford shirt; v-necked sweater (Izod if possible); navy blazer; LLBean field jacket worn over either Nantucket Reds or khaki chinos with embroidered lobster motif. And sperry topsiders, no socks.)

Yeah, hardcore northeastern coastal prep. Definitely a regional thing. I've always wanted to do a hipster-ironic version, but even that seems to be becoming a little too oversaturated here in New England.

Haha I just went down that rabbit hole too!

I actually have a skirt from that fabric (with a ruffle). If I admitted it was pink, I wouldn't be able to wear it.
