No muffin top to be seen! I've always thought mid-rise and lower-rise jeans looked silly with tucked tops, because they make everyone look like something is wrong with the proportions. I vote keep the bootcut and do a semi-tuck or untucked top with them. Your look in #5 is great. Also notice, in pics #3 and #4, you have a very blousy top vs. a fitted one like you've shown in #1 and #2. IMO, that makes the look work even better.

Lol re the confusion concerning the Aussie use of the word " skivvy " :)

...and yes they are worn as a stand alone top ( in some parts of Australia it doesn't get that cold in winter ) or if need be, layered under jackets, vests, jumpers or sweatshirts.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for taking so long to reply; it's been a busy week (worked an extra day and had things on three nights in a row!)

Chris M - we do wear skivvies in Australia as stand alone tops!

Shiny - thanks Pic 4 was ~25 years ago so those jeans are long gone! (and I think I didn't like that photo at the time - thought I looked huge on the bottom)

Thanks Lisa - Thanks for the nice long comment (and the agreement Smittie and Suz ) I'm just not sure how many 13 inch rise jeans there are around :-)

Thanks Angie - yes early 90's and to you and La Ped and Karen 13 - I'll happily go back to semi-tucking my bootcuts

Suntiger, I had one dress (I sewed myself) that went nearly to my underbust. It was a disaster!

The waist is hitting you in an odd place - that's all, Anne. You need a HIGHER rise to create the look you want. And then you'll be happy with the smooth effect.

Agree with all of the above. I see no muffin top. You can go with *much* higher rise pants if you want to full tuck, as these look like they're low-to-mid. And you do so have a waist, it's just several inches above the waistline of these jeans! With the old bootcuts I'd be inclined to semi-tuck a longer fluid fit top. I still have a couple pairs of pants that sit lower on my hips, and that tends to be the way I feel best about wearing them. Love the pics from your teen years! Gorgeous. And your wide-leg crop outfit is superb. If you want lower-contrast outfits in lighter colours (I do think low-contrast is a nice thing with fully-tucked tops), maybe you could make good use of a pair of high-waisted jeans in white or cream...

Anne - these jeans don't look very high-waisted at all. In fact, I can see where your natural waist is (you DO NOT have muffin top, lol) and your jeans look to be well below that line. Your teenage pictures show a much higher waistline. Jeans like the ones you are wearing are going to look like this on anyone (when you tuck in the top) ....and "this" is just fine. Try a higher waisted /longer rise pair and see what happens?

MT?? Where?? You really are being hard on yourself comparing to your teenage self and waist measurement. I do sympathise, I saw a photo of myself taken from behind that my husband took of me in shorts and had a similar reaction "My bum looks that wide?". You have a wonderful figure that is slim and healthy. We have to focus on the good stuff, not the negative and still enjoy the odd vanilla slice (I just saw Sal's post).

#5 is killer gorgeous. I do think tucking works best with soft blouses. Your Cue knit probably sits really well tucked into skirts. I would never attempt tucking in a top like this to jeans on myself.

Ok, I have stared at these pics until my eyes hurt, and I still can't find a muffin top.

I think what you're calling a muffin top is just a matter of the line of the waistband hitting you in something other than the natural waist, which is only an "issue" when compared to the way the pants in #5 look because those hit you at a narrower part of your torso. They just create horizontal lines in different places on your body.

I think the jeans in #1 look good on you, and there is lots of life left in them. Perhaps try an outfit lab, pairing them with different silhouettes of tops until you find the one that you feel comfortable in

(because I totally get that emotional comfort is a thing, and the lack of it in a particular combination can give me poison eye towards the garments of that combo to the point where I reach for neither garment in ANY combination)

I feel like those bootcuts are neither here nor there. Yes, I think you need a way higher rise to make the rise look intentional.

Anne, seriously, your body looks fantastic. It’s the skivvy top, not you.

You should fully intend to wear your older model mid rise flares with semi tucked or untucked woven tops that have just a wee bit of structure. Skivvies aren’t meant to be worn as a stand-alone. Add a larger belt to make the rise look a teensy bit longer, a blazer or moto and you’re good to go.

Love the younger pics of you - and the last outfit! I STILL struggle with cropped wide legs .....

The pants in the last outfit are highwaisted on me - the jeans are only midrise. I feel much more comfortable tucking with a true high waist. I think that's part of it, not just the top.

I don't see any muffin top. There is a bit of bunching with the top at the waist, though, which could be remedied either with a much looser top (as jussie noted) or with a top that is tighter in the waist area. But I honestly see no muffin top.

Cute pics of your younger self!

I have the same issue with tucking in mid rise jeans. Personally I’d go for a top that is a little less fitted and semi tuck at the front only. That kind of evens me out. A larger belt buckle can help with the visuals too.

My belief is that the issue is not one of muffin top. You have the tiniest bit of tummy fluff ever, so don’t worry about that. I think the problem is actually the particular top in pic one. A tucked cotton shirt like in pic two, with a little bit of room in the tummy/hip to avoid any clinging and you’ll be looking fab

Thanks Sal and Jane

Sal - we do call them skivvies, though this one is technically a knit top (from Cue, no less!) Yes, darker would be easier for sure! And in fact I was wearing a mid-blue hoodie - this was mostly just an underneath layer but I took the photos in order to think about proportions. The hard part is that I'm so drawn to light colours at the moment.

Jane - the jeans are probably about 8 years old - they are the replacements I bought once the first YLF recommended ones I had wore out - but then the pendulum was definitely going towards skinnies and I didn't wear them much (and when I did, tended to be with floaty, longer tops)
