The best way to assess body type would be through a picture of yourself, straight on, wearing tight clothes, like a tank top and leggings. You can cut your head off so that no one will know it's you. If you feel comfortable posting a picture like that, you might get more accurate responses.

One thing that helped me become more comfortable with my body was reading the book The Triumph of Indiividual Style. It breaks your body characteristics down in several ways: straight vs. curved; small scale vs. large scale; proportions; natural coloring; etc. It also has a chapter on various body elements (hips, bust, neck, etc.) and shows how to either minimize or highlight the body part. So often we get hung up on trying to minimize what we see as a flaw, but sometimes highlighting it can be amazing too! Anyway, the book helped me view my body in different ways rather than just in terms of a single "body type," which I found to be much more flexible. The book itself I think can be pretty expensive, but you can get it from your local public library for free through interlibrary loan if your local library doesn't have it.

You sound like an inverted triangle/apple shape, and it is NOT weird. Many, many women have this shape and look beautiful with it, like I am sure you do. We all have things that are flattering or unflattering, and what looks amazing on you, with your shape, might look much less amazing one someone with a different body shape. There are many women with that shape here, and lots of tips from Angie about dressing that shape.

It sounds abit like my shape. At least with a flat butt you can wear embellishments on the back pockets of your jeans. As Jenava says there is no perfect shape just enjoy what you have, try on lots of different styles and express yourself through your clothes.

There is a lot of self-criticism built in to your post. First, let me start by saying...knowing your body "type" is not the problem here. In fact, you probably know instinctively what looks good on you!

I am very sad to hear that your family comments negatively about your body. That is not OK, and i hope that you can get to a place where you see that, and tell them to stop.

I'm also sad that your main descriptor of your body is "weird". I get it - your body is changing and it doesn't look like the girls in the catalogs, or even your friends, but guess what? EVERYONE is different and unique. Genes are amazing things, and produce some crazy variations amongst our species....that is how we have survived!! So, yeah, your body isn't a cookie that was cut from some mold so no, it's not going to look like the "ideal" that gets touted around. The faster you can get over the idea that there even IS an ideal, the happier your life will be.

As someone who worked hard to try to "crack the body type nut", let me tell you - the most effective way to figure this out is to try on lots and lots of outfits and get a feel for both the STYLES and fits that YOU like on your wonderfully, unique frame.

It sounds like you have a similar body shape to me. I generally wear flowy tops with fitted pants, or structured fabrics that show my waist but don't hug my tummy. Skirts and dresses are nice for drawing the eyes to legs, compliment with stylin' sandals or boots. I also wear a lot of single tone, deep V's, it shows the collar bone, and that becomes the focus. Buy a few well made items, like a cashmere v-neck, because cheap fabrics will be clingy or hang on the parts you don't want to accentuate. Good luck!

Without seeing pictures, I will say inverted triangle with a secondary shape of apple or primary shape of apple with a secondary inverted triangle. If you go to the search engine on this blog and type in either of those key words, you will find blog posts on dressing these types of shapes. BTW, your body type is not strange at all. Your description sounds very common. I know numerous people that have this type of shape:-)

Dear Monkey, I'm smiling because your shape sounds a lot like my younger daughter's. She's 21 now, and has figured out some tricks for making the most of her figure:
--Find bras that really fit and support. (You won't find them in most teen-oriented stores.)
--Invest in great jeans (I recently talked my daughter into trying long flares with chunky-heeled booties--a lucky trend for your body type.) Flap pockets at the back add some curves.
--Long, open cardigans, and puffer coats (instead of short jackets) over pants are fab.
--Over-the-knee boots were made for you, but all boots will help balance your top & bottom.
--Show those collarbones, stand up straight, and be proud of your lovely self!

CALLING ALL Y'ALL EXPERTS 'CAUSE I NEED YA HELP

The thing is, I'd like to know how to "dress for my body type" and what not. Especially with bathing suits, seeing as it's summer. But I never-and I'm not exaggerating- see girls who's body looks like mine. The best example I can think of even now is my best friend, and even she was blessed with a booty i can never hope to have.

So what's my body shape? I need your input! Here's the layout:
I'm 15 years old.
I'm 5' 6.5" .
I weigh 166 pounds.
I have a medium/average build.
My measurements are 42-35-37, as best as i can tell.
I have big boobs, and a tummy, but while not drastic, I DO have a defined waist.
I have small thighs, tiny little chicken legs, and bony ankles.
My arms at the tops (where my boobs are) are kinda big in my personal opinion, but my actual arms are pretty thin and my wrists are tiny. Also not relevant but my hands are kinda bony? Like hey knuckles?? what are you doing??
My shoulders are average in broadness and I have a pretty slender neck.
I have a round face, but it's not explicitly FAT.
My collar bones are visible, and I like them, but they're not drastic, model esque, HOLY SHIZZLE THERES BONES STICKING OUT OF HER CHEST GOD
SAVE US visible, ya feel?
My butt is so flat. It's my aesthetic cross to bear in life. You could say it's caused me to be the constant BUTT on my families jokes. (DID YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE)

Okay, good people of the Internet, give my weird ol' body your best shot and body type me! Thanks in advance!
