Thanks CCeile & Meg!

After doing a lot of honest thinking, and wearing/walking in circles on the carpet, I've decided to definitely return the Veronicas & Campus Lugs. The Veronicas look great on lots of people, but I don't feel like myself in them, and my heel is slipping a bit, which leads me to suspect I wouldn't be able to walk long distances in them. The Campus Lugs are just too similar to my LL Beans for me to justify $200 of my budget for them.

The Melissas are still in the 'maybe' zone; I feel like there are equally strong arguments in both directions. Luckily I have another couple weeks before I need to make my final decision! I do have 2 more grey boots (not Frye) arriving, but they're from Nordstroms, so not the fastest shipping.

Well, after having my own Frye-boot-off, I ended up with a pair of cognac Melissa's (not the back zip though), and dark brown Veroncias (my hair is dark brown)! I love them both and they look great on you! My Melissas gap a bit with skirts too (probably more than yours actually, especially since mine are pull-on), but it doesn't bother me much. Sometimes I wear them with scrunched knee socks that show a bit and fill the gap a little.
That said, I actually think the campus are also lovely on you, and plenty different from the LL Bean!

I like the sleekness of the Melissas on you, but the gap would bother me -- if it doesn't bother you, then go for it. But I am partial to the Veronicas, since I have a pair I think the ruggedness fits in well with the rustic aspects of your style!

I recall them being a tad short on me, maybe an inch or so below the knee; that's one reason I thought they might work for you--they didn't seem overly tall. They are taller on the outside than the inside of the leg, so the front of the boot is not the tallest part.

Thanks Aubergine! They look great on you. And Carter found that Nordstrom has the same Pikolino's & in my size, so I'm ordering them to compare. I gotta admit, the 'brujas' name appeals to me...but Nordstrom describes them as 15 1/2" circumference, which is probably going to rule them out for skirts & dresses with me, unless the top buckle cinches. Fingers crossed, though, that I'm wrong!

Alasse, I'm pretty confused too, heehee. I SO wish the Melissa lace ups came in a grey or taupe, because I'd save up and buy those even at retail price.

E, I usually just wear them with casual dresses and tights or leggings. Once in a while with skinny jeans tucked in or with black ponte skinnies and a long, thick sweater. Nothing super-creative, but they're pretty easy for me to wear because they match my coloring and my general slouchy RATE-ness.

Here's a few outfits with them:
K/R: Cranberry coat, Eileen Fisher cardi & yet more jackets (photo near end of thread)
WIW this week: Turtleneck, zigzags, and ON sweater dress semi-copycat (with the polka-dot dress)

And that's a shame about the Pikolinos in your size! That definitely looks like the color I had, BTW.

Thanks Firecracker for thinking of me! I saw them on the site & loved the look, but the 16 3/4" shaft height, if true, is too tall for me. How tall are you? I'm 5' 3"; Zappos describes the Melissas as 15 1/2", and they're definitely the limit for how tall I can wear before hitting my knee/being uncomfortable.

E, there's a boot at Nordstrom Anniversary sale that looks like the Melissa button with back zip, except with smooth leather bottom and suede calf. I tried on the gray today, and it's a beautiful soft shade, slightly brownish tinge (but not taupe). Only thing is, it might be too big for your calf, since it fit mine (snugly). Anyway, just a thought. I'll add the find here.

Thanks Firecracker: I've been looking at some outfit pics with the Veronicas but they seem to fit very differently on different people, so I wasn't sure if I should be aiming for gap at the top or not.

Suz, I can keep the Melissas & Veronicas, but not all three, and if I keep the Campus Lace Ups, I can't keep the other two. I'm going to try on again with some hosiery I think. I'm still confused about styling the Veronicas, so some closet play time is definitely in order!

Well....I am like MG, I say: ALL the boots! At least if they fit and fit the budget.

I really love both for you, and I also love the lace ups for your style, plus they seem to bookend your hair really surprisingly well.

The Melissas are more refined and sleek - which I like. But they do gap with a skirt so are not ideal for that. I agree with the others that burgundy and blue are a match made in heaven.

The Vernonicas bookend well. They feel more casual and clunky but they're also really versatile and people who have them seem to swear by them.

Gosh, what a tough decision! I am glad you have a few days to play around with them. I am no help at all.

E, I don't think you need to cinch the buckle all the way--I just like the fact that there's the option to go tighter, say, if you're wearing them with a skirt and tights, than if you are wearing them over pants. They're a really cool design with the slouch, and I've admired them on Kelly and Ceit here.
I agree the Melissas are great for your style--not too dressy, but more refined than the other styles here.

Crutcher, that is definitely a possibility! Thanks for your input.

Ceit, should I have cinched the buckle or left it loose so the Veronicas are slouchier? I had no clue what to do w the buckles, lol. This amount of gap doesn’t bother me, especially as it’s with bare legs so will be less obvious with tights/socks.

Tanya, if you were a size 7, the Veronicas were $150 in this colour on Amazon a few days ago!

Kkards, nothing to forgive: thanks for the feedback & lighter/darker works just as well: I know which ones you’re talking about!

Thanks Kiwigal: I agree that they meet different needs. :)

Briar, I don’t wear straight skirts, but I do have a full corduroy one whose buttons would play well with the tan colour I think.

Firecracker, so you think I wear the buckle like this, cinched as much as possible? I think I’ve only really noticed riding boot style outfits, so the Veronicas are confusing me. lol I don’t dislike them though! I can see how the gap makes the Melissas a bit more casual; luckily I live a very casual lifestyle, so even gaping that’s as dressy as I’d need to be (unless I’m in pumps). I’ll give the campus lugs a bit more thought too…I love how they look in the pictures!

Aubergine, the Melissas fit my calf better than most of this style boot, but I agree it’s not perfect. I might take some other pictures w hosiery, because I think the gap would look different then. Good to know about Veronica durability! How do you style them?

I popped over to Zappos to look at Pikolinos; they do have one in grey that’s just in my budget (if I don’t keep any Frye’s), but I’m not sure of the style. Maybe I’ll order it to try too: thanks for the lead! EDIT: I tried to order it, but of course grey isn't available in my size or either size closest to me. *headdesk*

Kelly, yeah when I finished tightening the Campus calves, I had way too much lace left over! I think I’d just cut some off if I kept them or maybe tuck the ends in. Thanks for the links: you style your Veronicas wonderfully!

MG, lol: that’s my initial reaction too. Boots are so yummy & much easier to fit than other shoes. No, I wouldn’t stop my search: I’d still be looking for my ideal grey boot (something like the Melissa Lace Up in grey would be delicious). The other alternative is to buy the Melissa Back Zip style in the ‘soft grey’: there are a couple pairs in my size on ebay right now. It’s a very brown-y taupe-y grey, which doesn’t bother me, but I do suspect it’s too dark a shade for me to be entirely happy with it. I’m not sure it’s light enough to get the bookending effect I'm looking for, and of course ebay doesn’t have free returns. Here’s the stock photo: what do you think? Sometimes I think I should just forget about bookending all together, but a medium-value boot would be very helpful. I just wish the grey of my Carson lace ups was available: I'd even be willing to save up and pay full price for that. Sometimes it feels like a conspiracy.

Anyway, I share your hesitancies about the Veronica: it's a completely new style to my eye and I actually expected to dislike them offhand. I don't hate them though so I think I'll see if I can turn up some styling suggestions, try them in a few more outfits, play with the buckles more, and then decide.

I have a THING for boots, so my initial reaction is KEEP ALL THE BOOTS ALWAYS. Ahem. I do think the burgundy ones are *fabulous* on you, especially if they go with your fall wardrobe, and yes navy and burgundy are great together. The Veronica Slouch I'm actually a bit hesitant on just because they seem a little *too* slouchy/big on you width wise, and the height is neither mid calf nor knee high. I do think they look good, and could see you happily rocking them (they definitely play into the gamine, grown-up urchin trudging through the woods thing you have going). However, they do sort of tread (hee) the boundary of deliberately oversized versus too big (to my eye at least).

Hmmm. If you kept them both, would you be happy enough to stop your boot search? Or would you still be looking for the "perfect" boot?

I like the burgundy and the slate Fryes for your style. I'm not crazy about the lace up for some reason--they look a little fussy with the laces. I have the Veronicas in slate and they go with everything. I think they are my favorite boot. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I have lots of WIWs with the Veronicas. I will try to link a few for you.

I love the look and color of both the Melissas and Veronicas for you. To me, though, the Melissas look maybe a little too wide for your calves. I think the Veronicas work better with a little gap because they're more casual.

Also, I have the Veronicas in brown and love them. Have had them for maybe 5 years and they're still holding up well. Have gotten them resoled a few times and, kind of randomly, the elastic gusset thingie at the top is starting to get stretched out, but other than that they're in perfect condition.

I had a pair of (kind of ugly, but comfy) boots from Pikolinos in a warmish medium gray a few years ago, so I'm not sure if that may be a brand to look into because at least they do that color? I know what you mean about nice gray boots being hard to find. If I found a well-fitting, stylish pair of tall boots in either gray or burgundy, I'd be thrilled to no end.

These are all great selections--tough decision!

I like the Veronicas best on you. The color, style, and fit look fab. I like that they have the buckle at the top that allows you to pull them in slightly. The color bookends beautifully with your hair.

The Melissas are great with pants, no question. I noticed the gap at the top of your calf in the skirt photos, as others did. I agree, though, this little gap may or may not bother you. It lends the boot a more casual than sleek appearance, to my eye. Burgundy goes great with navy; no worries there!

I really love the campus lug boot on you, almost as much as the Veronica! I can see how it might look like a duplication of the LLBean, but I think they are very different looking because of the materials. The LLBean is more of a working boot look--let's go out and muck about in the fields--and the campus lug is rugged but definitely a city/town boot look. To me, this boot looks very much like your style.

P.S. I fear I'm no help!

Both Frye boots are really nice. Two different vibes. I like both equally well with jeans. The tan ones are a bit heavier feeling with the full skirt. I think these would work better with a straighter cord/denim/ponte skirt. The burgundy are more streamlined with the full skirt. They are so different, that if they both fit your lifestyle and budget, I vote keep both!

I like them both, they do meet different needs. The burgundy ones are much more refined and dressy, the tan ones much more casual and relaxed. I personally like the burgundy ones and think they can be worn with navy, especially if you add in some white, cream or light grey to the mix.

Ok forgive me,I couldn't keep track which were the Melissa's and which were the Veronica's (it's been a long week, and the brain can only hold so much), but I really like the darker pair. I think they work with both the jeans and the skirt. I like the lighter pair with the jeans, not so much with the skirt. So if you can,I'd keep both, but if I was choosing, I'd take the darker lpair.

Love both Veronicas and Melisas, I will get a pair of Veronicas some day....
Both look great with pants. However, for skirts I prefer Veronicas, as there is a Gap with Melisas. If you can not keep both, I would choose based on how often you would like to wear them with skirts.

The Veronicas are supposed to be slouchy like that. They look good, kellygirl has them in the slate colour too. I am going to get a pair too as I wear my black Veronicas all the time.

I think the Melissas look good with jeans, but a bit gappy with skirts, but you'll have to decide if that bothers you.

This is the last of my keep or return threads, thank goodness. My apologies for clogging up the forum!

I love the look & feel of knee high boots & wear them a lot when the weather's cool enough. My current collection is in photo 1: Reiker dark grey/brown weatherproof leather boots with lug sole & wool lining, cheap off brand faux suede lighter grey boots, and LL Bean sage green weatherproof waxed canvas lace up boots with rubber foot & lug sole. I bought the middle boots at Marshall's for $18 3 years ago, and they've served me well, but now one of them has a rip/tear in the faux suede. So I've been looking for a higher quality replacement, only to discover there are no medium or light grey leather (not suede) knee high boots anywhere. Black, dark brown, and cognac dominate, with maybe a charcoal grey if I'm lucky. Meurgh: it's enough to make me want to dye my hair brown. When I narrow the boot search on Zappos to just grey or taupe or beige or anything that could bookend my hair and go with my wardrobe, there's almost nothing left. I thought I'd found the perfect one in the Wolky Pardo and ordered it when it went on sale, only to discover that even though it's a lace up, the tightest it will go is still far too big for 13" my calves. Outrage ensued, and then bargaining (maybe it doesn't look so bad?), and then I finally accepted the inevitable and returned it.

Then last week, Amazon had a really good sale on the Frye Melissa Button Back Zip in burgundy in my size (only $110!), so I ordered it and asked the forum about Frye quality. Thanks to the ensuing discussion, and a couple more Amazon sales, I ordered two more to try: the Campus Lace Up Lug in tan and Veronica Slouch in beige and promised a Frye boot off.

I've shown them in my typical fall silhouettes (full skirt + body con knit or skinnies + whatever type of top) and then also provided close ups. I've pretty much ruled out the Campus Lace Up Lugs (hence they only appear in one pic): they're fabulous boots but fill the same hole for me as my current LL Bean waxed canvas ones (casual, rugged, make me feel like I can kick ass). Which is a shame, as they colour almost exactly matches my hair & the sturdy sole makes me very happy. I *love* the look of the Melissas: sleek, refined, this would definitely be my version of a dress-up boot. Burgundy would also go with most of my fall/winter wardrobe (I'm not sure about burgundy & navy: thoughts?). I love the colour of the Veronicas, good for light bookending and cool enough to work w my closet, but I'm kind of mystified as to how to wear them. Is this how they're supposed to look? They're definitely casual, but I think they'd wear well because of that (i.e.: the leather will still look good w scuffs). I'd get rubber soles added to either the Melissas or Veronicas.

The other thread made me realise that I'm not actually looking for a Northern winter boot, lol. I am looking for a Texan fall/winter boot (since the Reiker's wool lining means I have to wait until even cooler days to wear them) and a Northern fall/spring boot. I could keep both the Melissas and Veronicas (together they cost as much as the Wolky Pardo), as I think they'd fill separate holes. Or should I return them & keep searching for a refined, simple medium grey riding boot that might never show up? The NAS grey options are either not my style, too big for my calves, or too tall (what's up with all the 16"-17" boots all of a sudden?!). The nice thing is if I ever find the HEWI, neither the burgundy or the beige would suddenly be duplicates. But if the dream grey riding boots show up next month of course, I won't be able to buy them. There's always Christmas I suppose: my LL Bean boots were a Christmas surprise. ;)

Also, while my clothes closet is extensive, my shoe closet is smaller so I'm not worried about them not getting worn enough, even if I keep 2 and thus have 4 total (for year round wear I have 2 t-strap flats & 2 oxfords; for cool weather I have 3 ankle boots as well as the knee highs; for warm weather I have 3 sandals; for dressy occasions I have 1 pair of heels & 1 pair of ballet flats).

Sorry for the rambling! Anyway, the actual feedback I'm looking for is the on the fit & style of the Melissas and Veronicas (do they fit me? suit my style?), as well as any experience you have with their durability. Or if you feel really strong in favor of the Campus Lugs, and that they're not a duplicate with my LL Beans, feel free to tell me that too! I welcome differing opinions/discussions & my feelings aren't easily hurt. :)

(Apologies too for the photos; clearly I'm fed up with doing so many, lol, hence chatting on my phone. Thistle must be fed up too, as she's perpetually photo bombing! And the millions of photos might be overload for some, I know. Trying to get as well-rounded a view as I can without all of you actually hanging out with me as I try them on!)
