I'm with you unfrumped. I think I may mostly be behind the curve as well. For instance, I've been extremely slow to pick up on the "booties with cropped pants" trend. I see younger women look great in that and I only tried it once and felt odd! I think with my starkly white legs the contrasts of two horizontal lines across my legs felt leg stumpifying.

Tulle, I get that exactly!
I have never been fashion- forward but I started trying to update more with YLF. But I'm realizing that I'm going to be behind the curve and that also my environmental norm may tolerate that.
Whilst I'm not against outfits that are not conventionally flattering but are trendy and fresh , those seem to really need to be on- trend and not " out". So
Im focusing more on body type and generally flattering proportions- of course interpreted by ME- so it's more ok to finally " assemble" the items I have in mind.

Footwear is, as Ryce says, exhausting. It's so rare to find the right look in a shoe that also feels good, that by the time I've found the right footwear to carry a new look, it's no longer a new look!

This is a dilemma for me as I exclusively wear "barefoot" shoes (which means a rounded toebox and no heel whatsoever). So I have very very limited options for footwear, and accordingly have to stick to bottoms that will go with ballet flats, sneakers, flat boots, or sandals.

This is really true for me, yes. Because of my shorter calves. I always know that the right footwear will be key, but can't always find it. YLF has helped me at least search for the right options!

always tryibg, I agree! Sometimes the " recommended" choices don't work.
Ryce, I'm conflicted. When the combinations work out great, I go yay, I'm having fun with fashion. When it's hard, I wonder if I'm wasting my time and energy. I may be a fair- weather fashion gal!
Staysfit, that well could be.

Hmm, I wonder if the right footwear would enable me to wear wide leg cropped pants? I don't wear them because I don't like how they look on me, but could it be that I need some other type of shoes? After reading this post, I need to think on this for a while.

Ha! This is the primary reason I am usually slow to adapt to trends in pants and to a lesser extent skirt length. Figuring out footwear and heel heights and proportions is exhausting to me.

proportion is an individual thing. One person can wear a midi skirt with higher shaft booties and look great and another can look like she is standing in a hole. different leg to body lengths, different body types, etc. make all the difference. Also the contrast in the outfit, width of the pants or skirt, heel height of footwear, all play a part. Even after ruling out what does not work, you still have to continually re evaluate different looks. For me this is all part of the fun of fashion.

With fussy feet, I've finally learned to **begin** the season with shoe shopping. I'm proud to report that two shoe purchases (and a possible third candidate spotted) give me lots of shopping options for spring. There are more clothes for me than shoes.

I think shoes are a huge part of whether or not bottoms work. I have always said the right shoes can make or break an outfit and I totally believe it. It's why I am more willing to spend on shoes than almost anything else (except maybe outerwear).

Realizing the impact of the shoes on the bottoms and vice versa is one of the biggest lessons I have learned since joining YLF. It's huge.

I am a shoe girl, so that drives a lot of my clothing purchases, but overall it's likely 50/50. I won't keep anything if it isn't part of a specific outfit I've worked out.

I am so with you. There have been many times that I have tried on a bottom in a cropped length (pants) or midi length (skirt) and have said, "Ugh!" But the fit is spot on, so I know I have the right size...and I say to myself, "Before I take this back, let me try it with various styles of footwear." And immediately everything changes, and the proportions are there, and I'm excited to have found a new silhouette. But sometimes you need exactly the right style of footwear, and as you point out, it is not always easy to find the right piece in the right color and style and that meets our requirements for comfort.

I think my flaw is to "see" a complete outfit or idea in my mind's eye and then to need an exact, very specific item (maybe doesn't even exist outside of my mind) to execute that outfit instead of looking at more general categories and accepting various possible solutions.

I think you are absolutely right. One's proportions, leg heft, etc. play into how much one can play around and still get flattery, but I'll bet a lot of women don't think that it is footwear that is making a *bottom* an orphan. Those culottes look cute in the stock photo, but I'll bet they would look off in a classic three-inch pump.

I am always struck by the way the availability of footwear influences opportunity for style changes in " bottoms" ( skirts & pants , and technically dresses, too) choices , and vice versa..

Of course fashions and trends change both continually. But that doesn't mean I can find a given item very soon or easily if I like the style; (or maybe I don't like part of it, so will pass. )

Then lo and behold, an item turns up and all of a sudden I " can" wear something.
Examples might be that booties with the holy grail of narrow shafts allow for slimmer- straight long pants.
Or, when I found the PG ankle strap flats, for me those were the key that unlocked the more cropped length of pants or long culotte, or feeling happier with the outfits, because I liked that look much more than just regular flats.
I imagine that it is likely trends drive the look of both, but sometimes if is just me because the blogs will suggest multiple options, but I'll need something very specific, because I seem to be so ticky
about proportions with my feet & legs.
I think it drives some style choices for sure. It might help if I had either more imagination/improvising skills, or if I were to find photos of some other options I'd not considered- more street fashion.
How about you-- do you find the bottoms but not the shoes, or the shoes but not the right pants or skirt, or are you good at making do?
