Thank you, Jules, for looking and for the thorough feedback. I see what you mean about balancing the proportions and emphasis on the shoulders. I feel often the same way. Originally hourglass, myself and no clear apple tendencies. Interesting idea to wear menswear inspired patterned trousers with the first sweater.

I’d love to see the other sweater with something like menswear patterned pants for a more tonal look - but I’m generally just over white jeans so that’s probably why

I actually love the shoulder line emphasis of the 2nd sweater, it’s my favourite thing about these outfits. I think it makes the overall look more graphic and you. In general I think shoulder emphasis on non-IT shapes is flattering - narrows the waist and balances the hips, helping to create an X shape (I’m more of a pearish 8 hourglass with middle age weight gain around the middle - drawing out the shoulders is usually a good thing on me!)
But it’s not even primarily about figure flattery, I just mention that as a counterpoint to others’ comments. I just really enjoy the graphic effect here

Bijou, thank you for the wise words. You have really put the finger on it. I am tempted to try the trend, I love this style of sweaters, but an important aspect is the question “when would I wear them”. Not so many casual days and I am not a very “outdoors” person either. Our winters are not very freezing. We have snow only sometimes, usually a couple of weeks. So, I think that borrowing one of these would satisfy the need. If I would see a perfect one, maybe a bit more lightweight, perfect colours, perfect pattern placement and cut - who knows, though

Firecracker, thank you for the feedback, much appreciated. At this point, I will not be buying a new one, unless I accidentally stumble over something that blows me away. I don’t say never anymore, as it usually means eating my words later (or sooner), Lol.

I love these outfits, especially the colours of #2. This exercise answers the how to wear a fair isle sweater question and retain your signature, polished style, which you have done to great effect.

Whether you should get a fair isle sweater is harder to answer, because it is a question of "When would you wear this?" and is this a look that you would like to add to give you some more casual options. I think a lighter gauge sweater would look more refined and so you may find those even easier to style that these two oversized sweaters.

Often when I am looking at something that is outside my normal style I think of how it makes me feel and if I ran into an old friend would I be happy if they saw me wearing this. Embracing a new trend is fun, so there is definitely no harm in giving them a try or even borrowing these two beauties!

These are both beautiful on you. I especially like the way the pattern on the green one comes down over the bust. From these looks, I could see you wearing one of the traditional circular patterns quite beautifully, too. These are are such gorgeous vintage pieces, though, and kind of fun to share as family garments. I don't know that you'd need to go out and get another!

I think a hobo style bag or a saddle bag would go well with this style of sweater, but I also think you could carry a more structured bag, especially with the shiny boots and wool trousers.

Thank you ALL for looking and for the valuable feedback!

I love the sweaters in themselves - the way they are made, the history (they were both made by my DH's old aunts for many years ago). But it is a huge style departure for me. and I don´t love them on me. I don´t normally wear knits very often - I am a blazer and jacket person. On the other hand, they are very warm - perfect for freezing cold winter days. Since my boys have them in their closets and don´t wear them, I can borrow any time if I feel like wearing one, which I will do during the winter holidays. I am lucky!

Genius idea to try on the sweaters the gents had! The green sweater with the white pants really catches my eye. I think you should begin borrowing from your husband. Ooh! The neckline and pattern of the blue sweater are very attractive on you! I love that it is 50 years old and still going strong!

I think I can be objective here because I have no interest in nor personal attachment to fair isles . While I love the bold statement of the second outfit , I find the first one more flattering . The shoulder line created by the navy sweater seems off somehow while the green one creates a nicer circular effect around your shoulders and has a more subdued, sophisticated appeal . Just my two cents .

Joy, thank you for the feedback and the styling suggestions. Unfortunately, I don’t have any vest. I don’t really wear vests. But I will certainly try to arrange the scarf in a different way to break up the shoulder line.

Kate, thank you.

Christina, thank you. I am not really sure about the concept for me, but the pattern placement and size, the colours and the thickness make the sweaters look totally different. Maybe, there is a great one for anyone....It would be fun to try a few ladies’ style on.

Always trying, thank you.

Suz, Thank you, you are way too kind. I am honored. And Thanks for the ideas. White jeans would work nicelly with the blue one and probably the green one too. I have not thought of the gold bag as suitable since it is very structured, but maybe the contrast to the casual sweater would be interesting.

Thank you, Cee.

I wouldn't worry too much about wide shoulders - yes, it's true of the blue sweater in particular, but it's clear to a viewer that it's the sweater pattern, and not you!

I think you have enough positive proof of concept here if you want to try to find one for yourself.

These certainly add visual width to your shoulders. I wonder if the width can be reigned in with the ends of the scarf hanging down or adding a vest over them. I am wearing an old similar sweater today and liked the look of a vest although I don’t have any in the right color.

Thank you ALL for looking and for the feedback. You are awesome.

ABC thank you for the suggestions, the blue sweater would work nicely with the white trousers. Red bag would be nice, unfortunately my red bag is very structured (most are) and it looked odd with the very casual sweaters. Don’t know which shape and style would be nice here.

Cardiff girl, thank you. The blue sweater is some 50 years old, I wonder if these necklines were popular then.

Suntiger and Karen, thank you for the feedback. Funny, my area of concern is always my midsection and I have rather narrow shoulders. I normally don’t worry about looking to wide shouldered. But the blue sweater makes shoulders look really wide. DH has tried it just for fun and his shoulders looked enormous in this sweater.

Thank you, Vildy and Anchie.

Kkards and Janet, thank you. I think DH will not oppose a permanent “loan” of the green one :-)

Angie, thank you. What a sweet thing to say.

I WANT THOSE RED PANTS.

Raiding the boys wardrobes. Why not! You added fashion flair and verve to these Fair Isles in your special Katrina way. Nicely done.
