I love these looks, Sarah, and I often dress the same way (especially at water parks or at the beach). I agree that there is functional covering, which is a separate issue from modesty despite ending up with the same result.

You certainly don't look frumpy, btw. If I'm active in the sun, I, too, cover up with a guard + shorts; once under an umbrella I switch out the guard for a looser sun shirt over my shorts. Modest? Yes, but my intent is comfort and function.

I have been sporting a rashguard (long sleeve) and board shorts to set a good sun protection example for my children... although not showing any skin on the beach is making me feel a bit frumpy I admit I much prefer feeling more conservative than feels "normal" to me over skin cancer. Ill have to watch the video when I am on a device that better supports that. Thanks for sharing!

ETA: Very interesting video. I really like the idea of modesty being an acceptable feeling and not to cover a poor acceptance of ones shape. Just for fun... here are a few photos of my swimming outfits (with DD's) I purchased for this summer. I am working on accepting this look and not feeling like it makes me look overlarge when the ladies around me are in the itsy bitsy bikinis.

A thought provoking video, especially for Mums of daughters like me!
I never could understand why there are pre-teen bras and Ts with certain slogans available, and beauty competitions for little girls.
The 'attention' gained from the like are sending the wrong message out to both boys and girls.
(Sounding like an old lady now )

Thank you for posting. This video made me think--not about modest vs. immodest swimsuits, but about how someone who is starting a company has to identify a niche market and find a way to promote her product. In this case, the hook is that we as women don't want to turn off the part of men's brains that see us as people by wearing bikinis.

I think the video is really mis-named as it is not about the evolution of the swimsuit (though it does describe the advent of the bikini), and this mis-naming provoked a strong reaction from me. Ms. Rey presents two extremes: a teeny bikini or a high-coverage garment. She ignores the fact that there are many one-pieces and sporty swimsuits on the market; in fact there are lots of choices out there (has she looked at the Lands End website?) I wear sporty swimsuits, fairly modest so I can move in comfort, but I do not choose my suits based on what I think men will think (and I hope I never do).

I am around plenty of high school and middle school girls, and I think now more than ever, they have tons of modest choices. Some wear small bikinis, but plenty wear rash guard/board short combos, which offer even more coverage than the suits Ms. Rey designs and is promoting. Anyhow, I am glad I watched this video: even though I disagree with some of the presenter's points/angles, I have to admire her business savvy and I appreciate being provoked to think about swimwear. Thanks, Deborah.

I really enjoyed that video :-) Jessica Rey is pretty gorgeous!! I like her top and skirt in the video too and they're good examples of modest streetwear.

I was always pretty immune to any pressure to show skin at the beach (or anywhere!), but I feel for the young girls today who are basically 'swimming upstream' when they aren't comfortable baring lots of skin -- especially on the beach, or in summer clothes. My own 24-yo DD is naturally modest with her swimwear, and as her mom, it was one less teen battle ;-)

Hi Ladies,

I came across this when one of my friends posted it on Facebook. Worth watching. I found it thought provoking and interesting. Modesty would be my default, but I am absolutely NOT making a judgement here about those who think differently, or chose to wear a bikini :). I just thought it was interesting food for thought...and I love her range of swimwear:)
