We tire of patterns faster, I think. But some patterns have real longevity for each of us personally. Think <b>Brooklyn</b> with her moody dark florals and chevrons. For me, stripes and gingham and some tartans don't date. Polka dots have a retro flair that I always enjoy. Suddenly, I was reaching for that dress all the time!&nbsp;</p> <p>The same is true for summer dresses. I will wear them often if I have the right ones. Not "beach" casual, but "okay to go into town but not too precious" casual. And I need them for different summer temperatures/ humidity levels -- everything from 34C and humid (yesterday!!) to 23C and no humidity.&nbsp;</p> <p>I wear sheath dresses (slinky, oooh!!) for dates with Mr. Suz or special events. I wear shift or shirt or A line dresses for daytime wear. I also have a dress with a (shorter version) of that high-low hem in your "Janet" dress in silk -- that's a going-out-party dress. And I have a cotton handkerchief hem dress that can be a dressy daytime item. Do I wear each one 30 times per season? NO. I'll be smiling about that as I continue to weed and put down mulch in my gardens (i.e. playing in the dirt) after I finish this posting. </p> <p>I tallied up the votes just for fun and the top three were the bold navy/pink floral, the Janet dress, and the navy/white print. I had already decided to keep&nbsp;ALL of these, and perhaps will also keep either the navy more traditional shaped one and the polka dot one. Macys has an open ended return policy so I could keep the extra ones for a few months and then return later in the summer if I didn't want to keep the extras. My budget is happy too - the Janet dress was $140 and all the Macy's dresses were under $55.&nbsp;FYI the Macys dress fabrics are NOT as nice as Boden. </p> <p>I had a goal this year of figuring out why I didn't wear dresses much. I think I've got the answer now. I have a couple of occasion dresses and a few super casual,&nbsp; and the two in between ones I have&nbsp;are&nbsp;not great. I just didn't have the right dresses in my wardrobe. </p> <p>A lot of you made great suggestions about stocking up, and that really got me thinking about how dresses work in my wardrobe. I do NOT wear them a lot, certainly not every day or even every week, but I do have several events this summer for which I would happily wear one of these dresses, and having better choices in my closet might lead to wearing dresses more often. </p> <p>A few of you suggested stocking up since this is the first good year for dresses in a while, plus<b> La P</b> commented "who knows if/when something like this will come around again" about the Janet dress and others echoed similar comments. Really good advice all around. I tend to think clothing items need to be wearable many times to be worth buying, but I've realized that dresses don't need to work that way, especially not with my four-season climate with it's extremes. If each of these new dresses only gets worn a few times (or maybe just once) this summer that would be fine. They all strike me as styles that will be good for several years. </p> <p>I have an event (and potentially a second one) in November where I'll need a warmer dress or at least one with longer sleeves, and I'm feeling much more positive about the search for that.
