I'm sorry to hear about your husband's sister. So hard.

It's true about the dress thing. And it's so boring...

Seriously, just order a Liza Rietz dress. Either custom, which is what I did, or a standard size.
I got measured at her studio in Portland, she mailed it to me in Seattle. It fit great. I get major compliments every time I wear the ruffle dress.
So go to a tailor and get professional measurements.
Plus you're supporting a small business, not mass produced factory. And I guarantee you won't see anyone in your cohort wearing her designs.

Your immediate need for a black dress is over, but I highly recommend this EF dress that I bought this Spring

Lisa I don't have any good insights re breast reductions, but I know there are several forum members who have had them. I'm sure some of them would be happy to chat with you about it if you wanted. And I'm, with Cheryle and Suz -- All I ever see is a lovely woman <3

Lisa, I'm so sorry for your loss -- that is horribly sudden and enough to throw anyone into a tizzy. I am sure we've all had those days when the dress we imagine could help to soothe our sadness and stress. And then it frustratingly won't appear. As for the Bay, don't get me started. I don't even go there any more except to make the occasional return from something I have ordered from their (almost equally horrid) online "shopping experience." Granted, our Bay must be one of the worst in Canada and even Winnipeg's is probably better, but still. I know exactly what you mean about that factory of sheath dresses.

I say order that EF dress from Nordics for next time. It's on sale, no duty, and why not?

Meanwhile, I suspect Cheryle is right -- you look far more beautiful than you feel and what we'd see is probably gorgeous.

I do have a friend who had a breast reduction and it helped her self image enormously. I have another friend who had augmentation. And I have other friends who are the sizes that both friends were to begin with and who are leaving things as they are and feel fine about it. A very personal decision.

Totally hear on your rant on sheath dresses. A friend of mine swears by J Peterman. Probably not your style, but he has sleeved longer dresses with retro flair, at least different than the sea of sheath.

I am sorry about your loss, Lisa.
Yeah, dresses...don't even get me started on that topic! Even when I WANT to find a sleeveless dress (for dancing) it is a lot of hunting around - exactly because of cookie-cutter-ness of what is available in the store.
...on the other hand I have to defend the Bay as I found 2 gorgeous dresses there in the last 6 month. Sleeveless but special. However, I found both of them online, every trip to the actual store was a disaster.

I second Angie in wishing to see you in THAT dress...I bet you are too hard on yourself and it looked gorgeous.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your loss. You're going through a lot, and the difficulties of finding a dress is daunting. I agree that there's not much out there. I have no advice, except to say that I buy dresses before I actually need them. If I see something fab that I love and it's in my budget to get it, I do. That way I have what I need when I need it. If I wait until the need arises to shop, I won't find what I want. My mom used to make my dresses, and I miss that. Still, if I keep my eyes peeled, I can find nice dresses that are well made and affordable.

Lisa, I too am sorry for your loss. Cancer is such an insidious beast.

Having seen you in person, I have to wonder how you could perceive yourself in such a negative way. I really can't imagine you looking anything but the small framed slender woman that you are and suspect that anyone else who saw you in that dress would have seen the person I have met and not the one you see in your mirror.

I have often worn pants or a suit in a dark neutral color for this type of event. The rules of society have relaxed so much that almost anything goes - I am rather sorry it has gone quite so far.

Lisa - those are interesting dresses - thanks - too long for me, and a little too retro, but certainly more interesting that what's in stores right now

Elizabeth - I'd buy an EF if there was one to buy here in Wpg - I don't think the one store that carries the line has any of them in stock. I should order one - now that you mention it. So many of you here on YLF like this dress.

Mme approprio - you know something, it's at times like this where I wish I still sewed. That's where you can make exactly what you envision. You might be on to something here - not for right now, but in future. I LOVE sewing , and am pretty darn good at it, if I do say so myself

I am sorry for your loss, Lisa. Sadly, I have a funeral to attend too...a close friend's dad died unexpectedly this past weekend and the service is today.

I can sympathize with your dress dilemma as I find them to be challenging. A shift style works best for my apple shape and I avoid anything sleeveless. A sheath definitely doesn't work for me! And I too want a dress that works on its own, without needing a topper, because its the simplicity of a dress that I find appealing.

While I have a black suit or dark pants/dressier top that would be appropriate for a funeral, I too wanted to wear a dress. Last year I stalked an Eileen Fisher black silk dress and got it when it was on sale. The last time I wore it was last spring for my daughter's graduation from grad school, certainly a more festive occasion than today's wearing.

Una - I like that Michael Kors dress - despite it being more of an everyday dress. I'm going to pop into the MK store here tomorrow if I get a minute.

Thanks, all, for your kind words and for the suggestions to just go with whatever is in the closet. You're obviously right. I'm seriously lacking in dressier clothes and haven't bought anything this year other than jeans and more tank tops (lol) because I just don't like what I see in stores. There is a major hole in my closet for dressier, more polished clothes, which needs to be addressed. I need a trip to Toronto or Vancouver or Calgary again, stat.

I'm sorry about your SIL -- so sad.

I hear you loud and clear on dresses. Don't even get me started on how tough this is for someone who not only has a big chest, but big hips AND long legs (so most cuts are just too short). Most of what's in the stores bores me to tears. I've hung onto a few dressier dresses (with more classic fits) that still fit me that would work for certain occasions, even though I haven't worn them in a few years, for just this reason. But the last couple of memorial services I've been to, I have worn black or grey trousers with a black or dark printed blouse and dark pumps. Simple but occasion-appropriate. In fact, this is one of the only reasons I keep some well-fitting classic black and grey trousers in my wardrobe, because I don't wear them otherwise.

I wouldn't fret it if you can assemble something neutral from your closet in either a skirt-top or trouser-top combination that hits the right note. IMHO, it doesn't need to be black, especially in summer -- grey, navy, even burgundy... Good luck, and let us know what you end up with.

So sorry for your family and this loss, Lisa, and for the added stress of dressing.

I hate dresses and have had my rants as well. Count me in. I hope you found something to wear and got through it all.

Agree, agree, agree. I have one cool black dress that I spent a lot on because it was such a HEWI. And the Alexander Wang cheaper line tee dress, which is probably too casual for a funeral.

A busty friend of mine looks fantastic in this shirt dress which can be unzipped for more or less of a V:

http://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/.....wordsearch

Not the most edgy but definitely a good workhorse dress for her.

Lisa, I do the exact same thing. I get a picture of what I want to look like/wear in my head and it can create quite a bit of stress if what I am seeing is not actually in my closet:)

I am so sorry about your SIL, you certainly must be in shock. My dad did not live long after his diagnosis and I still recall, like it was yesterday, when I got the phone call to say he had passed away. I was numb! I am very confident you have some fabulous to wear already in your closet. So try not to put yourself under unnecessary pressure and make sure you are being kind to yourself.

My condolences, Lisa.....
I do have to comment though, that I've been thinking about this lately (last minute emergencies,), and wondering if I were morbid or nuts for trying hard to line up 2 or 3 possible choices in the event I have to travel to a memorial service. I had been alternating between feeling as if I were borrowing trouble for thinking about it in advance and the other side, being prepared. Your "rant" on dresses, which I could have written if I were so eloquent, made me feel a little less morbid and a little more prepared. Only a little....
Again, I'm so sorry for your sad news.

Anna - thanks - that is EXACTLY what I want. And in those looks I'm ok with sleeveless. I just don't want a cookie cutter sleeveless sheath. Great label -thanks.

Angie - trust me when I tell you I looked like mrs doubtfire . I was rather entranced with myself in the mirror but only in morbid fascination.

Deborah- you're right about a dress not being necessary - I just had this vision of myself walking around in an incredibly gorgeous charcoal linen thing or another and feeling super put together. All of this doesn't really matter though does it? I think I'm still in shock that she died so suddenly. Cancer . Diagnosed only 6 weeks ago.
