Jenni, silver pants sound like a thing people get in thrift shops. But I’m not sure if they go looking for them, or are just happy to be surprised by them.

Sal, I am really trying hard not to buy drab colours. Going for a bright palette this winter!

Pretty much everything. With Torontogirl.
7 items added to closet so far this year which is the lowest in over a decade.
Specifically hope to never purchase any high heels ever again. I am not sad about this. They look all wrong to me ATM.
I am really feeling I should possibly thrift rather than buy new for my next thing? But not sure. The only thing on my possible buy list is a pair of silvery pants, been wondering about this for months. Perhaps it would be fun to look for some in thrift stores??

Dresses for work, I bought 2 this year, resurrected a 1990's one, have one from a couple of years ago and since I only work 3 days in the office and day is casual Fri, I definitely don't need more! (at least two of them can be worn outside work too, however 3 are longsleeved, so won't be suitable in summer)

Oh no! I shouldn’t have read that about chocolate biscuits!

But not buying anything is getting easier all the time. I had to get some things for my son recently, so was in several mall shops and TK Maxx. I swung through the women’s departments in each of them. A crop top in Hollister’s appealed to me, but is totally impractical for someone my age, for this time of year, and for someone whose belly has never been darker than a manilla folder. Likewise, I saw a winter coat by Lagerfeld (legit Berlin, right?) in TK Maxx that briefly appealed until I realized that it’s boxy shape and general oversized fit would “read” as second hand chic. That’s how my navy winter coat already comes off, so it was easy to move on.

And that’s it. I have a short “buy” list, and am amazingly disinterested in general browsing/shopping around. Not sure why, but fine with me.

@La Pedestrienne - FWIW, I wore a fair amount of black when I was in the workforce. I found the commute to work, the pedestrian traffic, busy work office with many people, window shopping during lunch hour, etc - was very stimulating - maybe over stimulating. Black or mostly neutral clothes had a way of being a ‘calm in a storm’. When I retired, my life was much less stressful, and my environment comfortable, safe, and neutral. That is when I embraced colour! Interestingly, when I travelled, I fell back on a mostly neutral palette of garments. Probably because of the stimulation of experiencing new things.

I would submit that less black/more colour, is one way to provide sensory stimulation in a routine that has become mundane and lacking in excitement. Cooking, gardening, home decor, nature walks, bath and body products are all seeing an uptick - and, they are all ways to stimulate the senses.

I wonder if a lot of folks who generally enjoy black are finding they reach for it less because of pandemic lifestyle changes. I don't particularly like the way solid black tops look in video calls. My house is mostly cream walls, warm woods, and soft blues, and wearing black against that palette looks off to me. Charcoal, rust, sage and olive are all better choices. I've never had to coordinate with my house before! And I find my black bottoms pick up a *ton* of dog hair when I'm at home all day, which drives me batty. I imagine I'll go back to black (Amy Winehouse forever relevant!) whenever we have lives in public again, but I can't really say for sure.

These are currently well-stocked or overstocked in my closet:

Black pencil skirts
TBH, any skirts
Really, any black clothing (during the pandemic, I’ve really been off black.)
Button-down shirts*
High heels

*(if a button-down in a beautiful ocean color turned up, I wouldn’t say no. I’m always looking for nice tops to wear for auditions).

There is quite a lot of overlap interestingly - blazers and heels stand out as being things that are less in use....

I get frustrated with myself when I am drawn to something that doesn't work at all - I don't tend to overbuy in a category but am more likely to keep on trying (for example) a shirt/blouse that is hard to wear because I can't layer over the top.

And Angie's influence is strong with many of us avoiding too much black.

Work clothes! I retired in January and even if I go back to teach a class or two-I have enough!
Heels
Scarves ( well maybe if something special comes along...)

No more long blazers and long toppers - I’m happy and good for awhile!
I should put a moratorium on midi dresses, but I love them, so I’m just being very selective.
I am also good on button down shirts - but they are also on a “do not buy unless they are very special” category.

Oh, gosh, anything? I definitely don't *need* any more clothing this year. I suspect I'll make a couple outerwear/footwear purchases (gear and gear-lite only) to get me through this already-quite-chilly fall. I've also had my eye on a few pairs of tempting pants/jeans but not sure if I should try them. The more practical purchase would be some extra technical fabric joggers or leggings.

My definite do-not-buys are:

black (feeling boring, and I have plenty)

non-gear footwear (aiming for direct replacements only, and the only things I'm wearing right now are hiking/running shoes and occasionally simple flat oxfords or canvas sneakers)

blazers

dressy anything, especially for warm weather

flannel shirts (I say this, but I'm eyeing one as I write )

Hah, I have a mental one too. Top of my mind, I'd say:
- blazers: don't wear often enough to justify adding more
- sweaters (pullover, not cardigans)
- transitional jackets (weak spot)
- dresses (weak spot)
- architectural tops that can't be layered over: love the style, impractical for temperature sensitive me

I need reminders on a few things that are ‘easy’ to buy, but which I shouldn’t ATM - for one reason or another.

Men’s style crew neck T-shirts - not a flattering look for broad shoulders/modest bust - V neck or boat neck is the way to go

Cropped pants - I have enough
Black - doesn’t make me happy
Bags - I don’t need any more wardrobe pets!

*Note to self at every shopping trip - try the size down! I tend to get things too big.

Pretty much everything except for leggings and PJs! I'm anticipating a long winter at home this year. But the only thing I'm really even tempted by currently is transitional footwear, which I already had too much of for my climate pre COVID.

Great list Sal and great question! Currently, I basically don't need anything, so everything is on the do not buy list (with the possible exception of a black and white printed skirt to wear in fall/winter, if I spot a good one).

Generally speaking, I make the same mistakes though and have been working with ways to be uber-mindful. Size and fit is a big one, colours that are not really "my palette" and repeats of the same item in different colours (usually I stick to the one, maybe two favourites, and any others get passed by).
