Yeah, this is an ooooold thread, but funny to read back and realize I still own some of my mom’s (and my) vintage slips! Every once in a while they come in handy.

A couple of years ago I found a Commando simple full length black slip to wear under a certain dress to smooth things out, and it came in handy to wear with the clingy Fuzzi dress. So anyone in the market for a full length slip, take a look at Commando. I think it’s this one: https://m.zappos.com/i/8246215...../2501825/3

When working, I had several midis and maxis. I always wore a slip with them, either a half slip or full dress. I also always wore spanx, and the skirts were of opaque material, but I felt more confident and "smoothed" with a slip. And you never can tell when standing in bright sunlight (as a young, newly engaged Lady Diana learned)! I was born in 1958, so grew up with slips!

They still exist - I have found them at Macy's, Vermont Country Store, and various online lingerie sites. Even pants liners are still out there.

This thread has inspired me to seek out a well-made slip to keep dresses/skirts from clinging -- something silk from Winter Silks, per Fashintern, or Peruvian Connection would be a treat.

My 82-year-old mother, the oldest of three, recalls being taken to the hospital to see her mother and new sister and my grandmother taking one quick look at her 3.5-year-old first child and saying to my grandfather, "Her slip is showing."

My grandmother had developed what they called "childbed fever" after the delivery, and there had been worry that she might not pull through. So the fact that she was well enough to notice this faux pas was taken as cause for celebration. FYI: She lived to be 97.

This IS an old thread! But I have to speak up, since I have a huge slip collection. As far as I can recall: 12 modern ones, mostly black and nude with a couple white, including a couple of full slips. Adding vintage petticoats, 8 more, varying in fullness from barely there to square dance. 6 white, 1 black, and 1 light blue and white.

Like Shiny, I used to have a wardrobe of slips. I stopped wearing them, then finally got rid of most of them. I did save a few that I thought might come in handy at some time or other, including a couple of bias cut slips that are perfect for wearing under sweater dressers. I’m going to pull mine out and start using them.

So many reasons in this thread for wearing one, and I found myself nodding in agreement throughout. I requested and received a silk one (think it was from Winter Silks) Christmas 2016. I still have not-so-nice poly halfslips from ages ago that I wear it my skirt is clinging to tights, which isn’t often. Maybe fabrics are made differently?

I wear slips or half slips several times a week, under dresses and skirts which would otherwise cling to my thighs. But I agree that they can be difficult to find.

Last year, Kohl's had a few options for basic full and half slips (in multiple lengths!) of the non-shapewear variety. I don't know if they still have them though because now I'm in Canada, so no more Kohl's for me.

I generally dislike slips because they're just another layer to worry about. Most of the time I refuse to buy anything that would require a slip. But if an item is gorgeous or vintage and I need a slip, I always buy them at Goodwill or Salvation Army. You can find beautiful vintage slips for a few bucks, and even if you're finnicky about used undergarments - most of these lovely silky slips probably haven't been worn for years before they were donated by fashionable elderly ladies.

I wear slips as "slips" so rarely...maybe once a year or less. However, I love slips, and have collected quite a few pretty vintage ones. Another thing I love are old slips that have been tie dyed. During the summer, I sometimes wear a tie dyed half slip as a skirt.

I started wearing skirts about six or seven years ago, which is when I first figured out what slips were for. Because yeah, what are you supposed to do with an unlined skirt and tights? You can't walk three steps without it creeping halfway up your thighs.

Anyway, I six years ago I headed to the Bay (major Canadian department store) to pick up a plain black slip, and it was no problem. I only really needed the one slip for several years. But then about a year or two ago, when I started wearing midi skirts, I needed another, longer one, and also I could have used a full slip for this cotton dress I had. I was astonished to find that shapewear was all anybody really stocked. I don't do shape wear. I was eventually able to find a plain pencil-skirt shaped slip from Calvin Klein, but totally had no luck with a full slip.

I asked the gals at this local boutique I go to -- one that sells a lot of cute but unlined skirts -- where they get their slips. I know they wear them because both of them sometimes sport the intentional-lacy-hem-hanging-down prairie look (you know, when you wear a slip with a wide lacy border and let it poke out an inch or two below your skirt hem). Turns out all of their slips are from vintage shops.

I went looking for a slip again a couple of months ago, and was pleased to see, in the department store at least, that there seemed to be more selection. They also had pettipants, which intrigue me. Might give those a try one day.

I've also noticed that the stores seem to carry shapewear rather than slips!

Fortunately, I have kept a lot of old slips. I seriously have a couple of half slips that are 30 years old. Plus a couple of full ones too, because sometimes they work best under dresses so you don't get the elastic line at the waist. I have a Spanx slip, but I really don't bother with it much -- maybe a wear or two a year.

I also have a small collection of vintage slips. They were my mom's and I don't have the heart to get rid of them. Most of them fit me too. I'm guessing they're from the 50s? Some have some really nice detailing and lace. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. Slips have huge nostalgia value for me, remind me of when my mom was teaching me how to dress. I think shapewear has killed the slip, which is too bad because a lot of shapewear causes clothes to cling, whereas a slip encourages the clothes to skim your body. ALthough some outfits do demand spanx!

This is a very old thread and more places seem to be selling slips, or at least half slips, since I posted this. I ended up buying some at Target but would love to find some pretty ones of better quality. I can't imagine wearing dresses and skirts without one. I often even use them with lined dresses to keep the dress fresher between cleanings.

I always do the window test. I stand in front of a window and if I can see light or the outline of my legs through my skirt, I wear a half slip. I've never liked full slips. I can't think of a time when I didn't wear slips. I was raised wearing them. However, most of my skirts and dresses in the past few years have not required them.

When I asked for them, last summer, the salesgirl said they don't sell anymore....WTH? I wear mine under all unlined skirts/dresses to smooth out my bumpy bits, as opposed to needing them for sheer things.

I tossed some a few years ago, I better keep these ones

While it is rare for me to need a full slip, I often wear a half slip. How else to prevent see-through? Oh, that's right; no one cares if their clothes are transparent anymore. Ugh. However, there are half slips available at Target, Kohls, and all the department stores I have been into, so someone besides me must still be wearing them otherwise stores wouldn't be carrying them.

I have a full slip (nude) and two half-slips (nude and black) for the few unlined dresses I wear. Most of my dresses are lined but I wouldn't think of going out of the house in an unlined dress without a slip, whether wearing pantyhose or bare-legged. It makes the dress hang nicer, look smoother, and prevents any backlighting issues.

I have a really fab full short slip from the Gap that I wear under unlined dresses to smooth and prevent cling. Can't recommend it enough.

I wear half-slips with unlined skirts and wrap dresses. Like Kari, the one I use the most is an old one that was too long and I cut off the length. I don't see how in the world a grown woman can function without a slip in her wardrobe, but maybe I really am getting that old!

Real slips, not shapewear, are so impossible to find. I think they're only available online. I am hanging on to slips from the 60s, I tell you, that my mother gave me.
