Not sure if it is covid, Easter or just an excuse - but being at home and having to prepare multiple meals has not been great for my waistline. Hot cross buns have been my undoing and the closure of my gym and karate school means that training at home and walking are now my main forms of exercise. DS is doing his martial arts training online and I am his designated attacker, so that is sort of fun.

The extra lbs I have put on I am not beating myself up over. I plan to take each day as it comes and eat healthily and make sure I move lots. I cannot wait to get back into my usual exercise routine, I miss it for its physical and mental/social aspects. Me and my karate class mates had a cup of tea catch up just to stay in touch.

JAileen - when I add alcohol back to my diet, I would love to try the tarragon thing.

MsMary - I am a fan of anything with basil or mint, and enjoy a nice lower cal Gin Gin Mule (a Moscow Mule with diet Bundeberg ginger beer and gin)

Back in the fall I lost close to 15 pounds and I have managed to keep it off. I love to cook and bake but I’ve been good about sticking to three healthy meals a day - but I always have dessert because that’s just how I roll! I love fruits and veggies so I make sure I eat lots of those. I take the dogs for a walk every day, and since I’m teaching from home now it’s two or even three walks a day. Every morning I work out with a streaming program called “Daily Burn” and I love that. With the exception of the additional second/third walks, this is all stuff I was doing pre-Covid.

Not going well here. At first, I lost weight, 2kg in two weeks, looked great, nearly pre baby weight! But that's when I was riding to work to avoid the buses, and worried about food shortages so eating less, and full of nervous energy.

Now I have been working from home for 4 weeks, shops are pretty much stocked again and I had a day of gorging for my birthday 2 weeks ago, hot cross buns around Easter and basically a lot less self control. So not going well, with everything back on.
I am back in the office for two days next week doing physical tasks, and that should help as I (like msmary) can only eat what I bring in. Even the coffee machines won't be working in the tearoom!

Mary, I think you’re probably doing it better than us. I’m enjoying it though. Last night we had a gin and tonic with the tarragon infused simple syrup. I started making the tarragon syrup several years ago, to make tarragon soda. Our son was in the Republic of Georgia for a year. We had their national drink when we visited - tarragon soda. It has a very surprising yet delicious flavor. My tarragon soda looks better than theirs, because they dye theirs a bright green. :(

JAileen, we are doing cocktail hour, too, but I had to give up hard liquor because it's just way too many calories plus it hits me way too hard. So I am having a glass of champagne for my "cocktail." (Unless we are having margaritas. Because everybody knows tequila is medicinal.)

Anyway, I had been quite miserable back in the fall and winter because my weight was way up. I started tracking my food and exercise and was doing pretty well, and I've been able to keep it up in isolation. So I guess I'm Team More Walking And Less Eating Out. I still have about 5-10 pounds I'd like to lose but I'm feeling good about how it's going and my clothes fit comfortably again. Most days Hubby and I take a walk around the neighborhood to earn our cocktail hour and that has been great for a variety of reasons.

Also I'm still going to the office so I'm away from the fridge all day, which definitely helps. I bring my lunch (usually leftovers from dinner) and spend the whole morning watching the clock and waiting for it to be time to eat! LOL

The only part of this that I feel good about is having a dry January, and never picking the alcohol back up. I used to be a very regular wine drinker.

I miss the discipline of workout classes with weights at the gym. I walk, do yard work, and the occasional online class, but it’s not the same. My jeans are definitely snugger. I also miss spin classes for the aerobic benefits.

Dinner each day seems to have taken on greater significance as it’s something to anticipate. That seems to translate to more carbs. And then we feel duty bound to get takeout from the local restaurants to keep them afloat....great food, but not as healthy. God help me, I hope Greg is wrong...

Same mixed bag. I gained a chunk back in October/November on an eating my way through Central Europe and Athens for an amazing month, and continued the upward trend thought the holidays. Normally I lose weight in winter when XC skiing comes, but back and foot injuries reduced my intensity this year. Plus after it had become very easy to open a bottle of wine with dinner for some reason...

DH and I stopped drinking alcohol in late Feb - we both picked up a mild but draining bug after travel to LA for Presidents week (we figured it was flu, but who knows, given today's reports of newly confirmed COVID 19 deaths in Santa Clara as early as Feb 6). Kept it up once we started SIP. So no booze has probably balanced the stress eating a bit. It is easier to resist the lure of a cocktail since DH is sharing in the process.

I've been trying to cut added sugar and cook healthy creative meals with DD home from college to keep everyone's spirits up and not waste any ingredients. Google what ever is about to go bad, +healthy+recipe. Last night was butternut squash, prosciutto, baby spinach pizza with the no yeast two ingredient dough from Greek Yogurt and self rising flour. Pretty good and no one died from the spinach being a bit over-age.

According to My Fitness Pal, I've been running pretty significant calorie deficits for weeks (usually 400-600 a day), but the weight is only coming off slowly. It must be giving me too much credit for my burn from exercise - primarily long walks and our ancient Nautilus stair stepper (where I read the Chernow Hamilton biography). I am down to just 2 pounds above where I was before my trip last fall and most of my clothes fit again if I were actually wearing them. But I have lost upper body muscle for sure.

I too really am hungry all the time. I'm using celery and non-fat powdered peanut butter dip as my snack.

Feeling in the same boat as most of you - it's a stressful time for everyone and we all react differently. I think I've maintained my weight but not the same muscle tone I'd like. I do have weights at home so I have no excuse but I spend a lot more time practicing guitar and that's either sitting or standing still.

We spend time a few nights a week watching friends live stream music and wine is part of that. Okay, wine is a part of most evenings - but not the same amount.

Here there are starting to open things back up this week - not restaurants or bars (they have to rely on takeout and selling groceries and other creative things), but more hours at the grocery stores again, businesses in retail can open if they wear masks and ask customers to wear masks, etc. Salons and such can't open yet - at least I don't think. It keeps changing so I'd have to look.

I put on "real clothes" today for a change from the workout/lounge wear routine that's been more common.

The upside to the workout clothing has been easy access to actually go and work out - and I've been walking daily and doing some weights (but just starting that back up again).

Like most of you, I'm finding it a mixed situation.

Denise, I am so so sorry about the restaurant. You have worked so hard over the years to make it profitable. How heartbreaking (not to mention, scary). And to you, too, Lisa, and everyone else out significant income. I know that must be a lot of you.

I'm losing/ have lost income, too, but not to that degree. Although I did lose my entire income for July in one fell swoop...need to find a way to make it up.

The good:

I'm walking a lot, maybe slightly more than my usual, And the terrain is hilly.

I have taken up running again, just a very short distance and only once or twice a week, since running isn't really my "thing" -- but it still feels good at this time.

I'm taking a 1 to 3 times per week kettlebell class -- the one I used to attend in Vancouver has gone online and that means I can go to it.

Mark and I have been preparing excellent family meals. Lots of variety and high on the nutrition and taste quotient. We like to cook and food's available.

The less good:

I don't have kettlebells so have had to improvise with a filled backpack and the weight is not enough for me. Plus, it's awkward. So often times I end up doing only body weight exercise. Still, better than nothing.

I'm not moderating my drinking as well as I would like. Daily wine instead of weekend wine, because, yup, it's the apocalypse. Plus, I seem to have regular Zoom "cocktail" hours with various friends (which for me means wine) and it feels like more than I used to do!

I don't have a scale but I think my weight might be down a couple of pounds -- not a lot (because, wine!) but an improvement over where I was. I don't really care about the number on the scale but I was aiming to increase muscle and lose a bit of fat.

Hmm, I fluctuated plus or minus 3 pounds or so regularly, and I keep an eye on it regularly; I figure maintenance is easier than loss and with perimenopause in full swing I try to be mindful of what's going on!

My workout routine has shaken out at about Even Steven with pre-covid ... I do two Zumba classes on Zoom (replaces my gym ones) and then do online yoga/pilates/toning type videos to replace those classes at the gym. I've always been a big walker so that hasn't changed.

I did get sucked down the rabbit hole of too many treats! I love chips and have been eating those too much ... plus some baking ... plus salted dark chocolate ... whenever my diet gets off-track, I use the Lose It app for a couple of weeks to track my calories and re-boot my habits. I will never give up my treats, but I like to balance them with mostly healthy choices (I don't want waste treats on things I don't love, as I explained to DD!) and then enjoy them guilt-free.

I do LOVE a glass of prosecco or cava, and was having one as a pre-dinner cocktail for the first couple of weeks of stay-at-home; it seemed to transition from work to after-work nicely, but now am back to just on a Friday or Saturday. Fortunately (?) with age has come minimal tolerance for alcohol, so I generally will enjoy one glass fully, and then switch to tea for the evening.

Since hurting my back I am down 5kg, I think it is mostly muscles because of my limited mobility. I am not sure if it affected my size since I am in roomy pj and loungewear all the time and haven’t put on real clothes in months.
I am trying to not go below BMI 20 and when this happens I up my carbs for few days. My recovery is at the point where I think I can start with some PT exercises and I am looking forward to it. This is not really COVID related, I am not sure if it will be the same if I would not have the health issue on top of lockdown, but I feel like being in lockdown since beginning February because of it.
For me single biggest difference for losing and maintaining weight was quitting alcohol. I eat now everything and I am more likely to lose than to gain weight if I am not careful.

Let's just say I'm bulking right now! Haha. I can totally sympathize, Carla. It's harder to build muscle as we age and to lose the gains we've worked so hard for is kind of depressing. It seems like 5 lbs is a lot of muscle to lose in 6 weeks--it could just be water?

As far as fitness, I'm doing what I can with what I have with what little motivation I have. I've been running--trying to make it turn in to a habit. Cherry picking workouts on IG using dumbbells, kettlebells and body weight. Not very fun but it's better than nothing.

Diet is okay but my weight is up (technically, it was up a bit before this started so I'm probably just holding steady.) Will tackle the extra lbs. at a later date and just try to hold the line for now.

I"m challenged in this area on a good day. Add in stress and it's very easy for 1 glass of wine to become 2.

I've added in a longer daily walk with an audiobook, which is helping with both the stress and the calories.

Now if the DD would stop tempting us with things like these marshmallow dream bars...

Denise - I’m sorry this is happening so your business . Those are tough numbers to confront . I have no income at all now either , and had to apply for a government relief program . So yes, I’m living on borrowed money too ( albeit my own , but still ) and it’s not comforting at all. I’ve cut any expenses I could right away , and am now considering changing my car insurance coverage , dropping my office phone line, and kicking out any subscriptions I don’t really need . Which are all of them .
Interested to hear of your success with Noom- I’ve heard very mixed reactions to it .

SImilar to most of you some things are going well and others not so well. I often worked at home so some things ie access to the fridge is no different.

The good
- lots of home cooked meals which tend to be healthier and smaller than takeaway or dining out.
- no spontaneous bakery stops for my favourites eaten on the run (a bad habit)
- lots of time outdoors in my garden or in the local area
- a regular yoga practice
- similar amount of running and walking, and more biking.

The mixed bag
- no meals with friends that involve lots of pre dinner nibbles and often dessert (which I love but are calorific)
- no work shouts for birthdays etc

The sad
- no weight training (I am doing some yoga and body weight stuff)
- no friends to exercise with
- no swimming

I did make an effort to wear fitted jeans for a couple of days. They fitted much the same as in March - but I do feel a bit weaker in the arms.

I'm up a couple pounds mainly due to more cocktails and wine. I used to be really stringent about no alcohol during the week and now I have a pre-dinner cocktail or glass of wine almost every night. I've been walking or running most days though so I think the increased alcohol is balanced by more exercise. However, I used to meet with a personal trainer on the weekends to do weight training and I haven't done any weights since the lockdown so I think that's also affecting my fitness level.

I frankly miss cocktail hour. Hanging out waiting for that one family member who always takes too long to dress and playing fetch with the dog while waiting... hehe

Oh dear heaven, Carla, I'm in the same boat as you. Weight training has been my fitness routine for a year, and I am terrified that this lockdown is undoing 2 years of physical therapy and a year of weight training. I'm actually using k-tape again because of an owie I got at work the other day.

I’m eating regular, but early on my husband and I decided that an apocalypse required cocktails. So every day at five my husband mixes us a pre dinner cocktail. We never did this before. Anyway, we’re drinking very little beer or wine.

I hadn’t been getting much exercise because the weather was bad, but now it’s nice, so we’ve been going for bike rides. Not grueling, but ordinary half hour rides in the neighborhood.

I joined Noom in February and lost 12 pounds. I quit Noom yesterday, I've had to cut back on expenses. It got me off of so much processed food. I am on the LoseIt app, far more reasonable and the food logging is easier than Noom anyway. You just don't get the "Psych Tricks" as they call them. I walk my dogs and try to get in my 10,000 steps daily, that's my fitness routine. I revised my goal downwards by another 3-4 pounds so I have some cushion for fluctuations. Some days my legs especially thighs feel weak. That must mean I have lost muscle. So I eat a big piece of salmon or the like and I feel stronger again. It's really hilly where I live so I can tell immediately if I'm losing strength.

Covid-19 has not had an impact on my fitness routine. It has had a massive impact on my finances though. I am living on borrowed money as my business went from making $2,000-$10,000 per day to $38-$300 per day. I do need to watch for daily drinking ... it's starting to creep up again, as my coping mechanism for depression/anger about my business being RUINED.

My weight is pretty stable except when I am stressed. I lose weight when I am stressed and this past year has been difficult for me. I really doubt that I will gain weight during this Covid because I don`t eat or drink to make myself feel better. My stomach becomes a knot.
We do Yoga every day and go for a walk. I am cooking plant-based meals from scratch. That is new to me. We have always been plant- based but I have never been such a "fancy" cook.

Oh, the craft beer! Actually, I've been pretty careful about limiting my alcohol intake -- I'm not a big drinker anymore anyway, but keeping it to a glass of wine one night, a night off, and then a beer with dinner a couple nights later...That seems to work for me, as long as I'm active. And with warming weather, our favorite drink (Hendricks and tonic) is tempting but I keep it to once a week. But we have friends who own a brewery, and they delivered three growlers two weeks ago. I love the growlers because I can just pour myself how much beer I want, and I'm not committed to drinking a whole bottle. I want to order more!
