I do think the cool or warmth of the shade will determine what colors will mix well with taupe. But any other neutral (black, white, grey) should work ok with taupe.

I've always liked it and collected items in taupey colors and mixed with black. Over time though I found it hard to work with, maybe because I don't use denim or navy as base neutrals. Or it would be unpredictable as to finding items in the right colors. Then I moved over to grays, and taupe didn't mix, while camels and tans do. Those are often too warm for " face" colors but work for accessories, especially leather goods, and prints and also different shades often work together while different taupes are less likely to.

I love taupe but I also love tan, truly hard colors due to undertones and such but when you find the perfect color...magic!

Unfortunately, the range of colours I have seen listed as "taupe" is such a huge continuum that without seeing the shoes it is impossible to judge. I agree that it may be a cool/warm issue, as a true taupe (at least in my mind) is a cooler colour than beige or blush or nude.

I love taupe as long as it's a cool taupe and nothing with warm or muddy tones. Can you say more about the ways in which you feel they're not complementing your clothing?

What Lyn said. I love taupe! But I am blonde, low contrast, and wear a ton of denim. So it works for me as a bookending (with hair) and as a near-nude.

I had a thought along the lines of Carter ... perhaps it's the cool/warm dilemma? If they are true cool-toned taupe, they might be troublesome if your wardrobe leans to the warm side?

I find either nude or blush or grey more versatile than taupe, but then I am a pale gal with darker hair so nothing is taupe. I think that blondes have better luck with taupe, from what I've seen on the forums.

I love taupe, but I'm blond, low contrast girl, and so find it matches most of my greyish things and the few patterns I have and include ivory/cream/taupe, but it's a muted muddy type of color so will less probably match brights. Suits to jeans well because of fadings or texture in itself fabric, which has many times kind of grey/taupe in the wovens. It especiale works with them if jeans have a taupe stiching, less if they have cognac yelow orange stiching. Love taupe with navies, silver and citron too.

post a picture of the shoes? They should work essentially like a nude shoe, especially if your clothing colors are cool rather than warm.

I am finding taupe a difficult color. When I started replacing shoes after the big purge, I decided a 1 inch wedge looked better than, and was as versatile as ballet flats. found comfy cute navy pumps like that, but in my size only had in taupe. So I got them thinking that it was a good neutral, and after finding the perfect navy pumps a few days later, decided to keep the taupe. now I am finding they do not look good with most of my clothes,, except jeans.
