Good timing, April. I need inspiration and ideas and advice!

We also moved recently and now I have a walk-in closet which is more of a "stoop-in" as it is under the eaves. It would not work that well for anyone taller than me. Currently it has crappy wire shelving -- and there are plans to improve it with custom shelving. Right now I have all my hanging items along the tallest long wall, coats and toppers on one short wall, shoes on the opposite. Then under the eaves there are no shelves so I've got my rolling carts with sweaters there, and some clothes and handbags in boxes. I could take a picture but the light fixture isn't working reliably (something is wrong with the wiring as it works intermittently with no rhyme or reason!)

We are also adding in a reach-in closet in our bedroom for the DH. We are getting all new bedroom furniture so I need to think out drawer space versus hanging space.

What's more we have another rather spacious hall closet that's rather odd as you need a step stool to get into it, so it's more for storage than daily use. DH plans to eventually line this one in cedar and use it to store kilts, tuxedos, formal / occasional wear, sweaters during the off season, etc. At the moment it's packed with moving boxes we've not wanted to unpack since we'll be renovating ... and just have to box everything up again.

The guest bedroom has a very large/long reach in closet that DH is using now. The previous owner hung the rods way way too high... I cannot reach them at all, DH (at 5'11") can just barely reach them! We'll be cutting this closet in half since we're moving the door to the bedroom to make room to put laundry closet on the second floor.

Not sure when all of this work will be done -- ideally, at same time we renovate.

We'll also be designing a walk-in pantry in the kitchen but I suppose that's out of scope for this forum. ;-)

I'm working with an interior designer for the renovation but I'm not sure if he's the most qualified for closets? Perhaps I need to hire someone specifically for this task?

I'm bumping this ancient closet thread (from, as I noted on a more contemporary thread, the era when we couldn't post photos directly to YLF and had to link to photo sites in order to share things) in case it inspires anyone to post his/her own closet photos.

I have a walk-in closet in my new house that is much bigger than the one I posted here, but it too has its challenges (i.e., tons of open shelving and not that much rod space. Attention, Closet Designers Who Love Open Shelving: ever heard of DUST?)

Taylor, your closet is AMAZING!  {drool}

Well, we bought a house! I love it and will be moving in this summer after we close on July 1st. HOWEVER! It doesn't have a walk-in closet so I will be moving forward with my down-sizing efforts with my wardrobe. Actually, storage is an issue overall with this house so all the closets will be getting a serious editing! But now the stress of searching, finding and competing with 3 other families for the house is done and I can focus on setting up my new house and nesting!

Seriously I need a huge walk in closet. My closet is quite large, larger than any closet I've had in the past, It's the jewelry, purses, shoes, boots, scarves, sweaters folded, coats, all of these things need to be where I can see them!

Joy - If we do buy this house, I plan on switching out those tacky bi-fold doors immediatley! We have them all over the house and I'm developing quite a hate for them! Regular doors will be more useful. And more pretty.

So I started looking through my wardrobe and I keep hitting my same issue...I may need this...this goes with that....etc. I am especially attached to my collection of jackets/blazers. I love them all. I am wondering how to develop my skill of Brutal Purging. I can almost hear all my clothes whispering to me...making me keep them. My shoes are worst of all. It appears that my clothing has much better negotiating skills than I do.

Mine needs major work at the moment though, I still have maternity clothes in there from 6 months ago (shh, don't tell Angie). Maybe this is the motivation I need to get it sorted!!

Marlene, I have a closet just like yours and am too short to reach that narrow top shelf. I have a hook for belts on the back closet wall behind the hanging clothes for belts. They are reasonably accessible, but unfortunately out of sight. I also have a narrow shelf under the hanging clothes where I keep clear plastic shoeboxes with scarves and folded gear. I'll be very interested in what you do with your closet.
Oh, and my closet has two doors that open out instead of folding doors. You might consider that for yours. I find the hooks on the inside of those doors so valuable. On one side I hang the outfit I'll wear the next day. On the other I have hanging bags with little clear pockets for jewelry.

April - I love the idea of going through in tiny pieces!

A tip that I am using (and you can see from my pictures) is that I flipped around all of the hangers at the beginning of the year, and anything with a backwards hanger is an item I haven't worn yet this year. Anything that hasn't been worn in 6 months is going to be very seriously reconsidered, and anything that I haven't worn by next year (except my suit and maybe a fancy dress or two) will be going bye-bye. Plus, this helps encourage me to wear the clothes that don't usually get a lot of attention. It's so easy, and I think a bit less traumatic to part with items that you know you haven't worn in at least 6 months or a year.

April - I started poking around in the closet today when I was putting away my laundry. I think my biggest problem is I love all my clothes and everything fits so I need to go at this from a different angle.

1) I think what i need to do is an evaluation each piece and see if it goes with my current lifestyle. I have lots of pretty "going out" clothes and I can probably get rid of a lot of that sort of thing.

2) I also seem to have 2 seperate wardrobes going on right now: one built around brown and one built around black. I may consider only focusing on the black-based wardrobe and purge out all the brown-based stuff.

3) Figure out what duplicates I have and get rid of that stuff too

Marlene -- I think you're absolutely right. Going ruthlessly through your wardrobe is step one. Can you face doing that in tiny pieces? For example, pick a small goal: "Today I will find five items that I don't love or that don't fit correctly and put them in the Goodwill bag."

I will participate in a closet challenge!

Right now, we are living in a rental house with a terrible lack of closet space. I moved here from a house with a large walk-in closet. So now I am in the position of having about twice as many clothes as will comfortably fit. I've been saving everything because the PLAN was to purchase a house in the next couple months and that house would have a comparable walk-in closet. But now we are considering just buying this house. So that means that I need to seriously address the closet issue and I no longer have the luxury of storing everything comfortably.

My closet is basically a double bi-fold door with a single rod and a shallow shelf on top. If we do go ahead and buy this place, I plan to install a closet organizer system. But in the meantime...the sheer VOLUME of clothing is my main problem and no closet organizer system on the planet can make that amount of clothing fit in that limited space! So I guess my first step is a MAJOR purge. I am not looking forward to that event.

Itari, Sinead, and Carole -- are you up for a closet organization challenge, and can we help? It doesn't have to be a major overhaul, it could be just one initial step (such as "I will remove everything from my closet that isn't clothing, footwear, jewelry, or handbags.")

A good way to begin is to think about what irritates you in your closet. For example, I figured out that I hate not being able to step into the space, so I moved the shoe rack that was blocking my access.

Any thoughts?

Oh, April, that is the most organized closet I've ever seen. It must be wonderful to pull together an outfit from such an organized calm space. I have no idea how to get my closet organized (it's in an old house and has this weird, half-blocked layout) but you've inspired me to try.

Taylor- all I can do is sigh. You don't have a closet, you have a boutique. Lovely, lovely space.

Kate, you are also an impressively organized person- love how you've used your dresser drawers and those earring holders are brilliant.

Wow, April! This is the kind of closet we normally see in TV shows, not in real life It's so organized that I can't stop staring.
