I have noticed the trend here (in Scandinavia). Can't remember to have worn a chenille item before, but I love texture, softness and a subtle shine, so I would like to try some chenille items if they are in my colours and style.

Thanks everyone for your answers! The general opinion seems to be that chenille is a nice fabric when new, but doesn't age well. And yet, some of you seem to be very happy with their chenille items.
I think I am going to try an inexpensive sweater and see how it holds up.

Taylor, I have also seen a mustard/gold one I liked, even though I don't' usually wear any kind of yellow. It might go well with my cognac boots though.

Suz and Diana, you are making good points that it might feel too plasticky and hot. I run cold, and would probably wear a long sleeved cotton tee under it, so no direct skin contact. I do actually prefer garments with some natural fibre content.

Lisa P., your cardigan sounds great! I would like to find a piece like that. Is that the cardigan in the pic you posted?

Alicewonderland, now that you mention that, I do see the similarity to pipe cleaners! Hah. It doesn't bother me, though.

Nemosmom, cream chenille sounds great!

K.M., Jessicams, and Jules, I am also a bit worried that it might look cheap, but I think the soft and fuzzy aspect is going to win!

Thank you to everyone for highlighting the negative aspects of chenille as well, I will keep that in mind when looking at all those soft sweaters next time.

I bought this a few weeks ago from Yaya - quite like it. I do wish it were a few inches longer, now that I've had a chance to try it on with bottoms and tops I already own, but whatever...too late for that. It's very luxe-feeling and different from a lot of other knitwear out there right now, which makes me happy.

I am in agreement with most of the above who say it’s appealing, soft and cozy, but tends to age poorly, with losing fibers, sagging out of shape, or morphing from sweet to tawdry unexpectedly. With all the other lovely choices right now, I won’t buy or wear any chenille. I’m on the hunt for velvet or velveteen for winter festive wear, so I’ll save my shopping dollars for that.

Briefly loved it back then, but then hated the bald spots that developed. It definitely looks cheap to me now, although lisap’s cardigan sounds great.
Trendy/inexpensive knits are often so short lived anyway that I’ve largely given up on them as not sustainable/environmentally friendly.

You read my mind with this post! I am surprised not only that I see it everywhere, but also that I find myself liking it. I never wore it or liked it in the past, I always found that it looked cheap and questionable. But now I like the fuzzy aspect. I tried a sweater on and it felt amazing, so warm yet lightweight. I didn't quite take the jump and buy one yet.

I've been seeing it everywhere, too. I picked up a cream colored pullover (I couldn't get the BR "fuzzy" eyelash knit, and the cream chenille was a decent substitute, IMO). It is SOOO soft, a heavier knit, and great for cold days running errands or WFH. I tend to stray from white/light tops as they wash me out, but I have lots of scarves I can use to fix that.

Chenille reminds me too much of the bed spreads and bathrobes we had in the 50's. It shed horribly and went from winter weight to summer weight with the big bald spots. I don't think I would buy it now unless it was a perfect piece and then consider it having a one season or less lifespan.

I like corduroy and velvet but somehow not chenille. It kind of reminds me of the twisty pipe cleaners I used to make crafts with in elementary school so it doesn’t seem like it should be on clothes. But then again I really haven’t seen it around much so if I saw a really nice one I might change my mind.

I have indeed noticed it, and in fact, despite not liking the knit at all (memories of cheap and cheerful sweaters in the 80's and 90's) , found myself buying a beautiful smoked navy chenille buttonless cardigan (of sorts ) just last week. It has black wool shoulder stripes to break up the chenille, and it feels utterly luxurious and chic. I think you get what you pay for with chenille.
