Suz, I'm late to this, but I think this is a keeper. You look fab in all the outfits, it's highly wearable, and a classic suit will be with you through several seasons and not date quickly. This will become a basic essential for you, I'm sure. If you later find a more modern classic suit, you could easily have both. I see no conflict here. From what you've told about how you feel about this, I think you will regret returning it. My BR suit is a placeholder suit, too, because the " perfect" suit is so hard to get by. It could take years, or maybe not!

Glad I came back to read the newer comments. Something I was trying to verbalise was just out of reach before :) Angie's comment about modern classic hit me because I think it is the modern in modern classic that has to be there for me before I "love" it.

Also shevia's comment about whether you would be able to get the modern classic suit as well if it came along hard on the heels of this one is really important.

This post has really clarified where I stand, hope it has for you too Suz.

Well, I'm finally getting to chime in here and I'm a huge YAY! I find the classic aspect of this suit to be exactly what gives that insouciant Urban Prince vibe - it's more like menswear and has all kinds of dash and panache. If you want a more fluid modern look, it will lose a bit of that androgynous sass. But that may be just my perverse nature talking.

I am thankful I have my Theory suit to prevent me from going on some fruitless quixotic search to duplicate this look.

First off I totally understand why you would want a suit. I think it is wonderful idea for you and can imagine you wearing it both as a suit and as separates across a lot of your activities. No problem there!

Secondly, this suit looks pretty darn great on you. I love the choice of navy, the fit looks excellent and it works as separates too (love it with your new Zara jacket).

Thirdly, a little bit of me does understand the idea of your getting a truly modern, low stance, single button jacket sort of suit. I would love to see that- or own it although I really would have no where to go with it! But I think it will be some time before that one comes along, maybe by then you will want something else. This one will probably stand the test of time meanwhile - and get lots of use. This is a case where the price would be a factor for me - I would be very tempted if you can afford this suit and not rule out the sudden, unexpected appearance of another suit or jacket.

Hope that helps rather than adds confusion!

I think this suit looks stunning on you Suz! It is a classic that will always look sharp and will hold the test of time. A more fluid Theory suit will be more edgy and modern but could possibly date more quickly due to specific details and fit. In an ideal world it would be fret to have both.

Heheh, Angie.

Maybe I want BOTH?

Or maybe I want one until I find another?

Is there such a thing as a placeholder suit?

Hmm. I want a modern classic, not a true classic suit. But -- the Lanai won't work for me. And the other Theory jackets are too long on me and the waist placement is incorrect. So...that leaves me in a bit of a lurch.

The next size up in the pants is obviously too large. Hip "poofs" -- not fluid but improper fit.

ETA: I promised some of my own thoughts.

As mentioned, the comfort factor is extremely high. "Fluidity" may or may not show in the pants but they are super comfortable -- more comfortable than any pants I own other than jeans and my black slouchy wool trousers. The jacket sleeves stay nicely scrunched (or cuffed back). The weight is light and it does not wrinkle.

It also felt really easy to play around with in the closet. I enjoyed trying it. It didn't feel like "work" to style it. Just throwing the jacket on felt natural.

On the other hand, perhaps I would feel this way about ANY suit, you know? I suspect I would, if it fit me right. I like suits. A lot. Trying this was an opportunity to see that.

Suz, I am typing from my phone so will keep it brief. You look beautiful. There is no doubt about it. I feel just the same way here as I do with Sveta's suit. If you read my last comment there it will make sense.

If you want a more modern classic suit. Return this suit. If you want a more classic suit. Keep this one.

I vote yay to the suit. Which is funny because I did not care for the fit on Sveta's post. But here I see lots of drape in the trousers which make them on trend for me. And I like the length and fit of the blazer here on you. I am usually a fan of one button styles, but that's on a pear shape, because I want to see more curve. But here it looks good.

Wow! These suit posts are super educational... Lesson to take home when I am next in the market. So onto your questions:

No idea about the 2 button jackets being dated. Seems like a classic to me (says the girl with a million thrifted jackets she thinks look great.. grain of salt required!). The pants are not a fluid fit to my eye. Not that that is good or bad, just depends on your goal. For this reason they dont seem to fit with what I imagine as your style in the outfits without a topper. (I could be totally off base here though so please disregard as you see fit). The jacket seems perhaps a bit short with the contrast provided by the jeans? I like it with the skirts pairings and the suit pants. If the suit feel like a million buck, by all means keep it and I will look forward to Angie's take as she seems to say the opposite of my eye lately meaning I obviously havent adjusted to the new fits yet.

@Diana -- I, too, have the sleeve falling issues. I am considering getting some of what we called a "boot blouser" in the military. A wide elastic with velcro on the ends you affixed under your pants cuff when wearing with boots. I think they could have sleeve stay put potential then you could pull down a fold of the finish fabric over them. Of course I could just sew an appropriate wide elastic, much better than the rubber bands.... its on my to do list before fall is in full swing.

I think Gaylene summed up my thoughts pretty much exactly.

I don't know if i would call the pants a fluid fit. They look like they fit very well, but don't read fluid to me.

I absolutely LOVE the way you've remixed the pieces here. And I love your tops (esp the animal print one). I am favoriting this as a reminder of how I can break up my suit pieces.

I work in a professional field and so I tend to like / go for a more "business appropriate classic look" (to quote Gaylene) and I think this set of pics hits it out of the park for that classic type style. Nothing wrong with the more classic look by any means, unless you want to skew more modern/trendy.

Oh, and I am with Diana, love your sleeve scrunching. I wish it came 2nd nature to me like it does to you. I have to work at it and remind myself, or try to get just the right roll in the am and hope it stays all day.

To me, definitely a KEEP, both pieces!

It's fascinating seeing the same suit on different bodies. I think the jacket fits you very well, but, if I'm being super critical, I'm hesitating a bit about the pants at the back. It's hard to see from a picture, but the rise doesn't seem quite right if you are looking for a fluid fit. On the other hand, if they feel good, just forget I even mentioned anything.

As for the style of the jacket, I'm a bit ambivalent as I mentioned in Sveta's thread. These shorter, slightly fitted, two-button styles are, to my eye, a very business-appropriate, classic look. My problem is that I'm totally smitten by the slouchy vibe I'm seeing in the longer, more fluid Theory jackets these days. But the price of those Theory suits, as Angie has mentioned, is significantly higher than a sale-priced BR suit. So, again, I'm defaulting to saying I'm sitting on the bench for this K/R.

It's so hard to judge from photos, darn it. The fit looks good but I can't get a sense of the fabric & I can't see how it moves with you. Having said that my gut reaction is that this isn't wow in the way your dress & leather jackets were to me.

Hmm, interesting. Maybe my sleeves are just all too wide. I do have proportionally very skinny forearms and wrists compared to the rest of my body. But even my knit blazers I have problems with keeping scrunched. Like, literally the minute I move, the sleeves fall down. Oh, well. Was hoping you had some secret trick that did not involve cutting off circulation with rubber bands!

Oh, and good idea about cuffing the sleeves on this blazer. I shall have to try that!

Kinda funny to see you in a suit! Not funny bad. I like how you have styled the parts so to me it looks like a good deal--the pants and jacket work with your other pieces.

Diana, originally I bought the petite but I went and returned it for the regular. The petite was too tight in the shoulder -- when I reached forward it pulled. This one doesn't do that. Also, the petite pants didn't fit me at all, so that was a no-go. Too short and too short in the rise.

So -- regular size.

For scrunching -- in this case, in the first set of pics, I'm wearing a knit top. The sleeves seem to catch and hold on the knit. With a slippery blouse it would be more difficult, but in Pic 10, the blouse is silk and the jacket sleeve did seem to stay put okay. In Pic 11 I scrunched further and turned back the cuff for a different look. I like that these cuffs have working buttonholes.

If a sleeve is too wide on me it won't stay scrunched. Sometimes they do pop down if my arms are not bent for a while. I just shove it back up. It's a total habit and maybe I don't notice I am doing it? My forearms are not particularly wide, nor my upper arms. But my shoulders are square. Not sure if that would make a difference, but it could. The sleeve is not wanting to collapse in on itself.

Really, really nice, Suz. The fit of the jacket is so good, though the two buttons do seem traditional to me. But most of the time I don't know what constitues modern anyway

It looks great to me! Looking at these photos, I'm wondering if the sleeves on mine are too wide, since yours look a lot slimmer (I don't know how they scale sleeve width with size). Is this the petite or the regular?

And can I ask you a question? How on earth do you get your sleeves to stay scrunched like that? I have given up on blazer sleeve scrunching because it requires rubber bands on me, and that hurts.
