Have you checked Etsy yet? You can filter things by German shops. If you find a designer you like, you may be able to order things custom made.

JAileen, you got me to look up that frequently-quoted “statistic” for the first time ever. You are correct. According to this article, “ The massive community of 250,000 Turks that Berlin is home to is the fifth largest Turkish settlement on the planet“.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/w.....html%3famp

Jenni, wouldn’t it be great to be able to visit the “family establishments” ourselves?

Ha! J’Aileen!
FashIntern, I am like Sal, I do buy some things made in China, I try to either buy from places on the local Ethical Fashion list or from smaller companies where I have been told the owners work with family businesses in China. Which is not proof that no-one is being exploited but perhaps a slightly better chance- or I may be kidding myself.

I’d be very surprised if Berlin had more Turkish people than Istanbul, since Istanbul has about 15 million people. Erdogan is not a good person. If that were the standard, though, I wouldn’t buy anything US made.

Sal, longevity in the wardrobe /quality is important, for sure. China is a lot closer to you. Not as close as N Italy is yo me, but ocean shopping vs overland.

It is a can of worms and you can only make the best decision you can.

I buy some new items that are made in China and Vietnam. Often gear such as running shoes and many NZ designers get their garments produced in China.

I am increasing my second hand purchases and NZ/ Australian made but about 1/3 would not be either. I do look at the company and their supply chain but I know that can be fudged. I mostly consider the quality of the piece and longevity in my wardrobe.

I have no answers, except to say this highlights the law of unintended consequences that is bound to kick in with any and every decision we make ... As you say, you can only decide what important thing you will focus on - and then I think hope that enough similarly well-intended actions net a positive shift in the long run ...

Kkards, thanks for that. If only there were laws and police forces to raid and try to clean up sweatshops in China! I had not seen the green guide--thank you! It looks like the fair was in January, in a place easy to walk to from where we live now. I hope there will be another in 2 months. Among the other resources, there is a guide to "sustainable" Christmas markets. That's right on time!

I’m still dilly-dallying over the skirt from Vive Maria. https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....want-these SAs have mentioned it as a local label, but looking into more closely, I learned that actually the designer is the only “Berlin” part. The company is in Southern Germany, and the clothes themselves are manufactured in Turkey.

That’s not Berlin, obviously. There are strong links between Turkey and Berlin—I don’t know if it’s still true, but for years, Berlin had more Turkish residents than Istanbul. But it isn’t the EU, so it doesn’t have the worker and environmental protections. Erdogan’s regime is not one I want to support.

This is more work than I’ve ever put into buying a skirt, but I think it will get much easier once I decide what “local” means to me.
