Good points. I hadn't thought about the dance influence. I really like the images, especially the last one. I think I had a pattern for some pants like that, and I made them. I didn't wear them much, but more because of the color that I chose (a very bold cobalt blue) than the style.

Many of the looks you describe are '80s vibes that we actually wore! Oversized was done sooo well back then. YES, yes, yes :)

Fabulous! Great thoughts on how oversized can be dramatic rather than sloppy. This is a good distinction for me to keep in mind when I'm evaluating oversized pieces -- will really help me zero in on good vs not so good choices. thank you!

Great point! The first is indeed especially high drama. A spectacular intersection there of dance, photography and fashion!

Roberta, look what I found here on YouTube -- Martha Graham talking about Halston in a tribute in 1992. The video shows some of his costumes for her, similar to what you describe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?.....roductions

What a great analogy. This immediately make me think of the garments that Halston designed for a dance performance. Maybe it was Martha Graham? They were essentially big squares of very stretchy, slinky fabric, so the dancers could move freely and create a new profile and image with every step.

Love this! Especially love the dance connection ... although I am an amateur "dance mom", one thing I've learned to appreciate is how the movement of the costume becomes part of the choreography, whether than be a flowing skirt in a contemporary piece, swaying fringe in a jazz routine, a baggy t-shirt in a hiphop number, or the wave of a jacket in a tap performance. Poetry in motion indeed!

I agree, Carol! I love the drama of clothing in dance, or theatre and how its used. IRL, I think the young'uns look great in baggy and oversized pants with tighter crop tops (similar to pic #3). If I could rock that look, I would!

I have always loved the off-the-shoulders over-sized T ala Flashdance look. I had a light grey one in 1984 and wore it regularly until 1994. Never been able to find a good copy. It was a nice firm material and I think that is what made it sit so well on me. I had a lilac pair of harem pants in the 80s (not too dropped in the crotch) that I loved but did not wear them with baggy tops.

A bit late to read this blog post. And feeling perhaps...like I want to be part of the conversation, since not many will be reviewing the comments on that post.

One thing I can contribute is--think about all the baggy, oversized clothes that have been part of the world of dance since I don't know how long. Think of the drama, the visual excitement all that fabric brings. One thing about baggy clothes is that in movement, they can be poetic.

That said, I don't wear a lot of baggy clothes, but the first thing that came to mind is taking an oversized sweatshirt and slashing it Flashdance-style, so that your shoulder shows. You have the delicacy of your shoulder contrasted with all that material. I did have a sweatshirt like that, a couple years ago. Second is a baggy crop top, those are great for the same reason--they contrast with a trim waist, if you have one. Third is peasant pants/harem pants, which, if worn with the right voluminous top, would be a stunning look.
