GG :: good luck with your move. I'm glad you got some unexpected inspiration for reducing the amount of stuff you take with you.

WOW Lisa :: 18 items - that IS impressive!

Mo :: spot on. It is only the dated items, or those that no longer fit my style, which I feel comfortable to purge off season.

yes, I have tried to assess and purge out of season, and besides an item being dated or no longer my style, I find it quite hard.
Now I find myself purging on an as-worn basis, often tossing it after an uncomfortable day in the item, and when new items come in that then replace other, older items.

I had to chime back in. I was so motivated by this thread when I went home yesterday I purged 18 items from my closet. I could already see those items are not working for me this season and now I have my spring/summer section full of only items I know I wear and I know I enjoy wearing. I was trying to keep those stragglers for the "just in case" moments or the "I should wear it just a little longer to get my money's worth" moments. But why do that right? Better to just wear the items I really enjoy instead. Thanks for the motivation! And if I end up falling short on clothes for the season (which I doubt I will), I can always shop for something new to add.

This thread has really helped me focus my thoughts about clothes and my wardrobe planning. I have just had a major purge of clothes as I am moving to Thailand at the end of this week. I have kept a few winter clothes in storage in case I come back to visit during the winter months and I am taking mostly summer and business clothes with me.

I realise now that I will not need to buy any winter type clothes at all while I am in Thailand. I will just need some smart cover ups to wear in the air conditioned buildings.

I am aiming to lose some weight when I move there so I will use the clothes I am taking with me until I am the weight I want to be. I think I might save up to have some clothes made to measure, which would be a lovely treat.

thanks for the ideas on culling, it will help me with less storage space available!

rachylou :: you are too funny. I felt the same way about magazines, when did they started coming out ahead of their time - in April you can buy June issue (???), etc. Crazy.

LBD :: I'm glad the thread was helpful. Happy purging :-D

IK :: I too tend to ditch something in off-season, but that is definitely an exception.

I agree, in-season is a good time to purge.

I also like to review what I own in the middle of the off-season. Generally, there will be things there that don't strike me as awesome - if I've forgotten I own it, that's usually a sign I don't wear it - and I pull them out and put them aside. Then I wait until the next season to see if I miss it. If I don't, byeeee!

WOW, this is a great post! I have been so frustrated trying to cull stuff out of two closets, and I couldn't understand why. Our thinking is very similar, I have to have the context of the current season to cull that season's clothing. Particularly, as you mention, the natural lighting.

Now that I understand it, I feel a little less anxious about the stuff hanging in my closet. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees.

I think you're right. It's much easier to shop and purge in-season.

It's a mind bender. Right now, the email ads are going out to pre-order for fall. Once again, I'm completely discombobulated. The fashion shows were how long ago now? What year are we supposed to be buying for? What are we buying? All of that is so yesterday. Or tomorrow. Or I don't know when!

And here I am in a panic because I still haven't found my shorts and the summer clothes are leaving already!

Great post Ornella. I'm like Deb in that I like to edit as I go. I just can't do a big edit, it's too hard on me, lol. I really do need to practice the 1 in 2 or 3 out rule to get my wardrobe down to a more manageable level.

Thanks for your insight - this totally makes sense to me. I'm trying to keep a mental list of what I wished I'd had (but didn't) the season before (or even what is worn out from last season), so that as I spot things out of season, I can consider them for next season, even though I'm much more drawn to in-season items.

Great insight here. My wardrobe is much smaller than it was a few years back (over 300 to under 150 items now) so purging has gotten harder to do. In the past year I've been purging twice a season. About midway I purge when I realize some items do not work every time I reach for them (this happened with my black trouser shorts which were a new purchase this season and I can already see they are orphans that are in my way in the closet). And again at the end of the season I purge, the workhorses that need replacing go on my list for next year and I will also donate items that are no longer loved and sat unworn for most of the season.

I was a latecomer to the consigning process a few years ago, as I always just used Goodwill and our church rummage sales. Would have used a Dress for Success if there had been one.

Well, either we've not got the greatest consignment stores or my stuff isn't so great, or both, but I'm finding it may just be too much of a burden.

Usually the "accept" times are during work hours, for me. Also, the in-season only thing caused me to have to keep stuff around, if I was tossing out of season, whereas like a lot of folks, I often want it OUT of the house. Or I keep 2 separate piles--Goodwill vs. maybe this could be consigned. And then I'm not getting much return on what I've taken in--it has never been enough to really work as part of my wardrobe strategy.

So I think it may be back to Goodwill-only for me so I can toss whatever, whenever.

So insightful and relatable. I love rearranging my closet as the weather changes, moving things around makes me put my hands on everthing. I can at the end of the season edit what was not worn, and this year, what no longer fits me, what no longer makes my heart sing... I think doing it as the season ends is better while it's all fresh in my mind... If I did it at the beginning of seasons, I wouldn't purge nearly as much...

It will be interesting to see when I rearrange again for Fall, if I purge any fall/winter items then as well...

What a great system Ornella thanks for sharing.
I havnt really thought about this before as I got to the point where I had so few things to wear that if I threw anything out I'd be nekkid :) ! I personally would probably wait till halfway or towards the end of a season.

When I lived in a 4-season climate, I was the same way Ornella. There was no way I could even think of out-of-season clothes until their time came.

I like clearing out as I go, like Shannon. I have no problem with my wardrobe being in a constant state of flux, instead, I rather like it.

I'm one of those who purges constantly. There are bigger purges, and then there are smaller ones.

My big ones come at the beginnings and ends of a season. Like you, I rotate my clothes seasonally, and during the rotation times, I examine what's there, what is and isn't getting worn, what I like or no longer like, and why. And if it isn't working, out it goes.

Then, if I am not wearing or not enjoying something in -season, I evaluate and often decide to let it go.

But I do guard against purging far out of season (i.e. tossing a sweater in July). For the very same reasons you name. I just can't imagine needing such clothes when the temperatures are so very different.

Thanks for chiming in, I am glad it is of help. And thanks to your feedback I'll fine-tune my strategy too.

Liz :: I like the idea of consignment shops as guideline, that would be such valuable incentive, but don't have the opportunity to try that. I believe consigning in the US is a lot more spread out than in Germany where I am right now or UK where I lived before. Which is a shame, because ebaying as a way of getting something back is tedious and time consuming more often than not.

Adelfa :: I totally agree about having trouble to say good bye to some things, and I'm working on trying to figure out why it is so in my case.

Deb :: I love your 1-2-3 approach Simple and efficient.

Ive not quite nailed down my optimum cull process so these insights are super helpful... esp. Deb's rule, love that!

I agree about the culling as long as we are talking about clothes you like & that fit :) I've come round to the opinion that culling is the last stage of the process not the first. Otherwise how do you know what to cull before you've worked out your looks for the season & bought your new pieces?

Shopping is different for me though - I tend to buy what I need very early in the season otherwise I can miss out on my size/colour etc.

I purge constantly. Between seasons I do a quick purge...what didn't work from the last season OUT and do a quick evaluation for the upcoming season to see if anything is in horrible shape and needs replacing. Then during the season I will do another purge with the same mindset as Ornella. I need to be IN the season to really visualize what works and what doesn't. Then anything that isn't working I can shuttle right on over to the consignment store since they can sell it right away. And by this point, everything is on sale and I can fill wardrobe holes at a good price.

This makes so much sense. I especially relate to what you said about sweaters - I can barely look at them now, but live in them for 5 months a year. Liz also made a good point about consignment stores only accepting in season clothing. I do have a place for out of season rejects, but ideally like them out of the house asap!

Great post! Editing way out of season is hard for me also. Plus I have to think outfits, not just pieces, especially as I might purge a top that looks short but then realize it went with a skirt.

I do okay at beginning of season-- a nip of fall, say. Doing lots more toss- as- I - go, though( or off to hold-zone) based on comparing happiness factors and using stricter criteria unless it'd leave a major hole I'm not ready or able to fill-- why keep This when I could be wearing more of That.

Great logic Ornella! I do mine in the season as well. And I keep a bag of stuff to donate in my closet so it's easy to keep purge items together. Once the bag is full, out it goes.

I completely relate to your thinking on this Ornella and do the same - I purge throughout the current season. It just makes more sense to me that way. My wardrobe seems to be in a constant state of flux, and I'm ok with that.

I am a 'purge as I go' person. If I put something on and take it off more than twice, the third time it goes into the purge pile. This keeps my wardrobe relevant. Thinking about it now, I have never missed anything that left.

I do it at the end of the season, I think mostly because I have trouble saying goodbye. If by the end of a season I haven't worn something, it's easier, though I do feel sorry for the people I'm passing things on to, getting them at the wrong season.

I like your method because it keeps things clearer during the season.
