An Emilio Pucci silk sundress on eBay last year new with tags for $325 instead of the $2500 list price. I posted here about it . . . but left it alone. I regret it :(

An amazing vintage top that was a combination of black, sequins with ribbons threaded through it and zipped up the back i came across at Goodwill. I was already getting a bunch of stuff and convinced myself i don't do enough fancy things. Which is most likely why i don't have that many fancy clothes. ;_;

Well, look how well we're doing NOW! (Maybe I should delete this thread before it traumatizes all of us?

- Saw a yellow bag at Marshall's. Loved it to pieces. But it wasn't leather. I put it back, but totally regretted it. Went to probably 10 TJ Maxx and Marshall's stores and many many web sites before I found it again... and paid more for it than I would have initially!

- Helmut Lang dress at swap meet. Decided I didn't need another black dress. Put it down. Walked all of two steps before I lunged back for it, but it was gone.

This type of post has probably appeared 267 times on YLF already, but I'll restart it.

I've only rekindled a serious love of pretty wearables in the past few years. But as you would expect, there have been some items I can recall, and will probably recall for a long long time...why didn't I pick them up? If only they were the right size, the right price, I had more time, I wasn't in a bad mood or out with a group of people, etc etc etc.

Luckily, I don't think my list is that long. But I still remember!

1. Marc Jacobs bag I saw in a consignment shop. Even as a "pre-owned" bag, it was wicked, ridiculous, crazy expensive, and I don't regret not getting it. It was over $500 bucks, and that's over the limit I feel comfortable spending--even knowing that a good bag costs. It was a beautiful, mod, cream-colored bag with cool hardware and a lot of little pockets. One week it was on the high shelf of the store, and a month later when I went back there, it was gone. I love when these things get solved for me.

2. a beautiful, handmade bag I saw in a boutique window in Rome. I don't even remember the details. I didn't even enter the store. (That is probably regrettable, that I would feel intimidated to go inside a store, but that is the truth.) I have no idea how much it would have cost. In my current mindset, seeing as it is a travel memento, I might have splurged on it.

3. a geometric-patterned cream and purple scarf in a window of a vintage shop in West Berlin. This was only a few months ago, and I was definitely into shopping by then. I didn't bother going inside the store because it was the second-to-last full day of my trip, and I was trying to eke by with a tiny bit of cash I had left (I could have gotten more out, but the ATM would give me a minimum of the equivalent of $100--and I didn't want to be bringing home a bunch of unused euros.) Small German stores don't take credit cards. I really think I'll be dealing with the hazy memory of this little scarf for a while, sigh...

4. and some regrets about things I didn't even bother shopping for...for example, in Madrid last April I didn't go shopping at all. Was not into it. And I think it was here that I eventually read of a cool store there that sells funky, well-priced handbags. Sigh...I also didn't shop in Berlin for anything, either. I think I convince myself I'm already being way self-indulgent just by travelling, and I don't need anything! (I will not think this way going forward.)

5. There was the almost-got-away handbag as well. I saw a beautiful, creamy tomato-red tote bag from Italy at a TJMaxx in Framingham, Mass and instantly fell in love, about four years ago. Its price was way outside my comfort zone at the time. I went back there two weeks later and of course it was gone and I was (within reason) bereft.

A month or two later I was down on Long Island, which is about 4 hours away, for a family event. On the way home, I decided to hit every TJMaxx there--there were at least three of them on my route back. And at the third store, I did spy the same bag! Of course I snapped it up, and was very happy with it till it eventually wore out from being used everyday. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the genesis of this: I had read in one of Brenda Kinsel's books that if you see something you can't stop thinking about, you should seriously consider buying it (well, she literally said that you should buy it, but obviously not if it's going to break the bank--but you know, "Don't let it get away because it's not a bargain!")

So all in all, not too bad...

How about you all? Can we create a big, beautiful imaginary boutique in the sky for all our missed opportunities?
