Shelia is onto something; it is completely arbitrary to think Capri leggings are one thing but bike shorts are another! But I didn't like bike shorts very much even when I was still riding my bike regularly. I generally think they should be reserved for the Tour de France and folks who own those special clip on shoes.

I see I am alone, but what is a bike short but a cropped legging? I wear cropped leggings (to right below my knee) under dresses frequently. No, not as shorts and I also don't wear leggings as pants, but that's me.

I think the fashion conscious fraternity would think of comfort first then follow a trend. But when it comes to the formal dressing I’m sure no one would prefer the shorts at a meeting with clients.I mean everything depends upon the occasion and fabric used. There is no intelligence in following the masses.

I have no problem with the category of girdles, foot-binding and other things that reshape a woman’s body. An uncomfortable bra, worn because it looks good, fits into that category, imo, as do high heeels—they make you stick your butt out, which can be appealing in the short term, but think of how many women you know who’ve developed back problems because of them. Tight clothes in general impede movement. I don’t wear styles that hurt or reshape my body, and don’t understand the priorities of women who do.

I had a black and white striped pair of leisure bike shorts in 1992 with a matching hooded tee. I wore them when I first met my now hubbie interviewing him as a potential flat mate.

You will never catch me wearing bike shorts for anything other than riding my bike — talk about the least flattering item of clothing EVER on chunky legs!

Other than that weird trend, I say yay to the rise of athleisure. Oddly enough, it’s rise has actually coincided with my own emerging athletic tendencies (limited though they may be). I have come to appreciate that a bit of “sporty” in my look is a great way to play down how inherently feminine and curvy my body is — to give a little bit of an impression of a bit more tomboyish, casual, confident air to my dressing. I like it. I like sneakers and baseball tees, hoodies and thumb holes in tops, and sporty stripes (but mostly worn just one at a time, not all together). I like mixing them in with other pieces and I’m glad they’re current. My recent hoodie-and blazer combos are a prime example.

I like that these looks imply that the wearer is ready for action at any moment — we are not constrained by the movement-limiting trappings of traditionally “female” style, such as high heels, tight skirts, etc. I can still enjoy those styles too, but on a day-to-day basis, a touch of athleisure works really well for me, and I say bravo to having plenty of it available!

Heh, I'm pretty sure bike shorts were a big thing when I was in kindergarten, circa 1990, so I'm not surprised we're seeing a resurgence!

I mean, pretty much everything about human life has been getting progressively more comfortable: houses, transportation, medical and dental care. So of course clothes will move in that direction too.

It does make sense to me that formal wear tends to be a vestige of older social norms, whereas leisurewear is where acceptability progresses most quickly. Formal wear is for situations where you're rubbing shoulders with the enforcers of the social order (religious leaders at wedding ceremonies, bosses at job interviews, judges at court appearances, etc, which tend not to be the time to bend the rules or push the envelope.

Ginger -- I was a bit surprised to see him lump girdles in with footbinding; corsets perhaps. But then, it was written by a guy, and if the editor was a guy too... I think a lot of men view a great deal of women's apparel as basically torture devices. I had a feeling that this pattern could be traced back even further; thank you for providing examples!

Ummlila -- I like to "save" my gear for when I'm actually doing physical activity too. I do have a few crossover "gear-casual" pieces, but they are becoming fewer and farther between. It's fun, though, to think about things like wool sweaters as the gear of yesteryear!

Lisa p --Yes, "workwear" like jeans and boots are a parallel phenomenon! I think he talks about that in the article. Actually, part of the reason I end up in jeans so often is because I use them for dirty chores and they really are the best in that regard. Explains why I have no designer denim, for that matter. Still a hard concept for me to wrap my head around. :D

Sorry, I'm on my phone and it's tricky to reply to everybody. I'll be back with more thoughts later.

Love this!! I don't think there is any glory in wearing un-necessarily uncomfortable things when we have other options that can look polished and appropriate? Let's face it - none of us (hopefully!) are wearing corsettes and hoop skirts, so we're all taking full advantage of more comfortable, lifestyle-appropriate options. The differences are a matter of degree only. Side-bar - lately I've been wondering if high heels are going the way of the corsette?

This is pretty accurate (though I take issue with the throwaway language lumping in girdles with footbinding!), but honestly, it doesn't go far enough. There's at least 300 years where leisured clothing becomes co-opted as normal day dress and finally formal clothing. (The white tie cutaway jacket, 200 years was the casual riding dress of Jane Austen's day.) The flowing silks that Marie Antoinette swanned around in started 100 years earlier, essentially as a new style from the East: the kimono! Worn open in front over underclothing, for negligee wear. As the decades passed it was adapted and updated and morphed into nearly the most formal of dress, except for true court dress.

It's interesting how innovation takes place for leisure wear. Formal wear is usually the fossilized remnants of much earlier styles. It's not the rise of sports that started the change of fashion.

I can’t think of much of anything that hasn’t been adapted for other uses. It is our overall pattern and has moved even more rapid with the ease of communication and the ability to mass produce. I also think it’s our simple rejection of formality and stiffness and desire for comfort when we move.

I like this! I'm not fan of athleisure in personal life, because I already spend a lot of time exercising, and so I prefer to wear something different when I'm not. I've seen a lot of the blazer and bike shorts trend on the internet (never in real life), and it's definitely one I'll pass on.
