Thanks Cee!

Gigi -- Yes, I actually feel a bit light on summer clothes now, and more motivated to add things since the wardrobe holes are visible reminders of what's missing.

Jenni -- My mom did save some of my 80s/90s kids clothes! DS is able to wear them, which is fun for all of us.

Karen -- Gear is tricky. I'm getting better at admitting there are certain things that I simply won't ever reach for again. Like that grid-fleece top. I was hanging onto it because grid fleece has gotten so expensive, but when fleece is *scratchy* you know it's time to let go. It's like it was turning back into plastic bottles or something. :D

Jane -- Yes! Everything is in the car now. One step closer. ;)

Rachylou -- Yes, do the tees! I'm not allowed to buy tees right now, even at the thrift store. Total moratorium this year.

Thank you Robin and Sterling. :)

Cardiff girl -- LOL! And yes, I'm a big fan of the holding zone method. Fewer regrets.

Runcarla -- Yes 3-5 years feels reasonable to me. It's nice to have been keeping track long enough to have that data.

FashIntern -- DH is like that. He doesn't understand having "stuff" at all, even books (or maybe books most of all -- he's a digital guy). But I think I've passed my book gene on to DS. ;)

Christina -- It's so satisfying to see stuff bagged up and ready to go. :)

suntiger -- I know. Sometimes I wonder if consignment is really worth it, but right now the $$ in my consignment accounts funds a hefty chunk of DS's wardrobe (he's 5 and needs new clothes pretty much constantly).

Nemosmom -- I get rid of chore clothes when they're too thrashed, the point where the dirt, paint stains, tears, etc make them uncomfortable to wear. For nostalgic stuff, I have a 24x24" square cardboard box in the back of the closet and anything I'm having a hard time letting go of goes in there. If the box gets full, then I go through it and let go of things or, occasionally, put things back into rotation.

The Cat -- I know exactly what you're talking about. My mother (and several other women in my family) have gone from black/brunette hair to salt-and-pepper, and all have swapped out a lot of black clothes in favour of charcoal and pewter greys.

Nomad -- I just don't love the way black linen looks when it isn't ironed, more unintentionally creased than pleasantly rumpled. I like linen un softer, dustier colours, greys, olives, mid-blues, etc. Also, most linens are too lightweight to wear outside of summer, and a wide-legged black bottom felt too visually heavy for hot sunny days.

Sal -- sounds like a sensible cull!

elpgal -- I do have certain items I like to duplicate secondhand for a variety of reasons (broadly: availability, fit, cost): Levi's 501s, Patagonia Stand Up Shorts, Saint James breton tops, Mountain Khakis Alpine Pants, Woolrich and Pendleton shirt-jackets, etc. The things I buy secondhand tend to be part of my off-duty wardrobe rather than my work wardrobe.

Oh, and, make that 22 items! I wore holes in a pair of winter socks yesterday. They are Darn Tough and will get traded in for a brand-new pair next time I go to the gear shop. :)

Your culls and updates are well-considered and intentional. I am inspired to do the same.

Did you replenish with any used clothing? I find myself doing that if I am attached to an older trend or style.

Here is my 2019 edit to date- 10 pieces.

https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=7242

Why:

Jeans - too low waisted. In Painting capsule - got three seasons from them.

Leather Jacket- no longer been worn. Found a new home with someone who loves it.

Coral sweater, black tunic, floral tee - donated

White sneakers, cognac sandal boots and beige heels - all worn beyond donating sadly as I loved them all.

Black and white genie pants - threadbare in butt. Used for rags.

Black retro heels - donated as too tight sadly (19 years old)

I have let in 10 pieces so I am even steven!!

Sounds like a realistic edit La Pedestrienne where you made the calls on some aging pieces.

I love a good cull! Nicely edited (especially considering that some had more mileage already when you acquired them), and it looks like you chose all these things wisely and they had a useful life. I don't see many wardrobe mistakes here, which is really impressive! (I would have thought black linen would be awesome, too... what annoyed you about it?)

Good job! Well done.

I recently got rid of several items, most of them patterned, that I feel no longer look great on me, as my colouring has changed. When I was younger and had dark hair, most black &;white prints worked for me. Now that my hair is silver grey, I need to be more careful and choose patterns that flatter my present look. I have written more about this in a comment to suntiger's post: https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ain/page/2

Lol Cardiff! I totally agree—not hoarding if it’s books. My son has never seen the point of keeping books he’s already read, so treats them horribly while reading. It’s painful for me to watch!

3-5 years seems to be a reasonable expiry date for a garment. A good classic would be well worn and a trendy item would have likely run its course.

Nice work! I need to do a similar edit. Like you, I have a lot of gear. I tend to hang on to the less reached for items “in case”. I need to be a bit more ruthless and just replace those with things I love. But gear is so specialized....

I know the feeling of having stuff to consign but having to hold on to it due to its being out of season. It's such a good feeling to be able to finally get rid of it. It looks like you have cleared out a decent amount of your closet. It will be nice to have room for more updated things.

Since suntiger recently mentioned a spring closet edit, I thought I would post an update on everything I have taken out of rotation so far this year. Some of these are things I've talked about getting rid of in the past, but have held onto thanks to various forms of inertia (wrong season to consign, lack of a suitable replacement, etc). Many of them are boxed up and waiting for warmer weather, since the consignment shops don't want shorts/tees/sandals yet. The really worn-out stuff needs to go to the recycling center later this week (their hours conflict with my work schedule so dropping off is a hassle). The middling items (not nice enough to consign, too nice to recycle) are going to the donation center on Wednesday, which is the only day my commute takes me in the right direction. I also included a handful of items that I'm hanging onto but which won't be part of my regular wardrobe anymore (as we were talking about on Jessikams' thread a little while ago).

What I’ve edited out in 2019 (21 items):

1 pair cropped leggings (replaced with a higher-rise ankle-length pair) (2013)

1 pair bootcut yoga pants (replaced with wide-leg cotton lounge pants) (2013)

3 ratty merino sweaters (holes, pills, too itchy) (2015)

1 oxford shirt (have other colours I reach for instead) (2014)

1 pair slip-on sneakers (too tight) (2016)

1 pair espadrilles (the dye has bled so they are stained) (2017)

1 pair winter boots (not warm enough) (2016)

1 pair flat leather sandals (stretched out) (2017)

2 pairs ratty denim shorts (2014/2015)

Unfortunately I don't have an accurate, updated total wardrobe count, so the number of items culled is probably a bit meaningless to you all. If I count absolutely everything (gear capsules, basics, etc), I am probably up at about 200 items. So removing 21 items means roughly 10% of my closet. A lot of these items are things I couldn't get rid of until I had a replacement (the layering sweaters, lounge pants, and shoes). And others are things I anticipate replacing in the nearish future, so I don't really see removing them as having much of an impact on my overall numbers; just what's necessary for stasis.

The "demoted" items will probably only last a season or two before I retire them completely and some other old thing will take their place. Likewise, the "nostalgia" items sometimes find their way to greener pastures after spending a couple of seasons boxed up. Out of sight out of mind: they often lose their special glow and their grip on me once I've tucked them away for a while.

I've also included the purchase years for everything (which might be a bit misleading, as many of these were bought secondhand and some are even vintage). The majority of what I'm removing is 3-5 years old, with a few 2 year old items and a few much older. I should also note that I have very, very little clothing from 2013 or earlier as I spent the years 2008 - 2013 moving and traveling a lot, and I kept very little. Somehow I do still have all my books!! ;)
