When I think of 'shorts with tights' I usually picture 'short' shorts - will be interesting to see the look done with 'just over the knee' shorts instead! I like Carla's inspo pics though - am intrigued to see the look with the *navy* loafers & oxfords instead. As for the red boots, I suspect it's not just the colour but possibly also the material? LOL. I'd have worn them with white sneakers (I know, not your vibe) or my new loafers and/or higher booties with a snug shaft. I actually love that particular length -- it works great for me -- but I'm short and relatively shorter legged, and  I think this is all a matter of proportion. As Janet pointed out, being tall makes a huge difference to how it feels and how it looks.  As shorts, these will be quite different. The looks above are mostly low contrast (i.e. the tights are not too far off the tonal value of the shorts). If you are okay with high contrast you can wear dark tights with them. Or maybe a charcoal grey? Or a lighter grey.... Are you okay with light tights in winter? You are one of the tights queens on the forum, so you might find they work. They might be nice to wear in "cool spring" when you are fed up with all your dark things and want to brighten up.  Anonymous on "Update: they’re getting cut off. The red boots look *okay*, as do the black oxfords. A pair of sheer socks in a dark neutral could close up the gap, if that's really the issue. I guess slim pants with short inseams is why everyone was crazy for "sock booties" for a while... But like Rachlyou, I'm wondering if there's a bigger issue that makes these pants tricky to incorporate--the colours, the scale of the plaid? A summery vibe that doesn't quite cooperate with the wool fabric? I'm just taking guesses here. I do think it might just come down to navy/cream not being a go-to colour combo for you, maybe because you do a lot of black/white prints and patterns... If you've really never worn them as pants, I don't see any problem with experimenting with them as shorts. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and all that. If they have enough volume to work as shorts (they do seem pretty slim?), then I can picture them with navy tights and your cognac oxfords. That could be fun! Do show the results. Suntiger, I could’ve tried a black top with the pants, could still try one with the shorts, but both the sleeves top I’m wearing and the LS one hanging on the door are navy. RobinF, what you say about the hem being too narrow or too wide makes a lot of sense to me. The one pair of pants I wear with tights made my legs seem skinny, because they are so wide at the hem. Is there any hem you could let down? I like them with the red boots and also think the cognac oxfords would look great with them.  I have made pants into shorts and sometimes it works but often the width doesn't work as shorts, either too wide or too narrow at the thigh if that makes sense. I think this length works best with one of two extreme options: a low-vamp loafer that opens up even more skin, or a high-shaft bootie to completely close the gap. To my eye, your red boots here create a nice proportion but I get that the color isn’t what you’re after. They are bossy pants, indeed! I find if I have to work that hard to make something work, it just goes unworn, as these have for you. Even though they do really look like nice pants, I wonder whether any tweaks are really going to make you reach for them more. I’m not sure whether trousers like this make for a good conversion to shorts, it might be throwing good money after bad. But honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever worn these one single time. I bet someone here who knows the Theory line can give us a date for them. My guess is that they are at least a decade old. They have been with me all that time, but never in my active wardrobe. In that way I’ve never really had them to begin with.
