Oh my goodness! Trading all the clothes I’ve bought for 3 years (because that’s about the total I’ve spent) for a poncho? My goodness. Thanks for the laugh. I’m sure you looked fab in yours in sunset colors.

Okay, probably not what you're after, and spendy, but nevertheless I saw this and thought of your search. Maybe I like this because it reminds me of an iridescent burgundy winter jacket I had back in the eighties (with burnt orange lining!). I know I like it because it has a less fitted, "gear"y feel. OK, now I want it. And I am not in the market for a $1,300 rain jacket. SIgh. Happy hunting.

I wish the North Face would list the length of that jacket! The model is 10 cm taller than I am, so it would reach lower, but it doesn’t have the longer tail that some others have. This whole hunt has me nostalgic for the rain suit—parka & pants--that I used to have. Bright red.

On me, it definitely covers the saddle, but that feels weird to me (biking with my coat over the saddle). I mean feels weird physically. I can't say why.

It is a bit of an A-line cut, yes, but also, it has a double zip, which I tend to open a bit from the bottom, which emphasizes the A shape.

The North Face jacket looks good, too. It's shorter. I have one that length that I do use on my bike sometimes, but don't like for walking because it does not cover enough of the thigh. For walking, I like length in the rain. For biking -- I think I'd rather just pull on my nylon overpants or something. But then, I'm still thinking in recreational riding terms, more or less.

Suz, your pictures are so much more helpful than Columbia’s—thank you! The periwinkle is pretty, and a good color for you.
Pictures 2 & 3 make it look like there’s a little bit of an A-line going on; is that right?
I don’t care if it’s long enough to sit on as long as it reaches down far enough to cover the end of the saddle.
Thanks again for inaugurating your new mirror with pix for me

Not trying to open up a rain jacket boutique in my parents’ living room, but I found one more I’m interested in.

This is the Columbia Splash a Little. In another year's pattern/ colour, of course. I got it last year but it might have been from a previous season to that.

On 5'4" me it is mid-thigh, more or less, and a bit longer in the back. This is a good walking length but less good (for me) on a bike because it's not really long enough to sit on comfortably and it bunches up if I don't sit on it, unless I open the double zip wide, which defeats any rain protection, really. Another person might feel differently, but for me, this is best for walks.

This is a S. It is generously sized, very long in the arms for me, but I use the velcro to tighten and scrunch the sleeves in fairer weather. I got it this size so I could layer under it, as it's a very lightweight coat.

CarolS, thanks! No rush—I’m not ready to start something right now, as we are getting ready for our trip. Do you have a clothing/design background?

I just went back and looked at the earlier thread https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....oat/page/2 It ended with Vildly and others giving me advice on finding one secondhand, and SarahD8 even picked one out for me. And Synne had really cool suggestions about fabric and getting something outside the norm. I feel like I’m copping out with these!

Thanks ST. I’m thinking I might order the Ultralight City coat. Knowing that I pay shipping both ways is making me think more carefully.

I just remembered this one I found in that other post. It is rosewood, a “new” color that interests me & I think it’d work with my berries. But seeing as London Fog made their name through a DuPont partnership and still makes no sustainability claims, I think I’m going to pass.

CarolS, “A residential colour workshop with an amazing designer“? Tell me more!

You/the designer are quite right that I don’t like things to be too perfect. There’s not much danger of that happening, lol, but if it did ever look like things were getting to be “just so”, I’d probably kick a leg off the table or something. You may have explained why I keep looking at that goldenrod (aaaachoo!) Royal Robbin jacket. I don’t mind the berries; they do make it easy for things to fall together. But looking back at my WIWs, I see it’s been quite a while since I dressed in a way that plays up that color strategy. My natural default is blue, which plays well with berry.

Suz, your gear jacket sounds like one I considered getting my son a while ago. Thanks for doing pix of the Columbia jacket—that will help!

SF, I can tell you from my own experience, that I like toppers to be short, or long. So the length of the long toppers would be no shorter the 31 inches - but you are taller than me! I like them longer too - up to 40 inches.

SF -- So..."once upon a time".. there seems like there's maybe a lot of weight in that phrase? Thank you for pointing me to the capsule in Finds. I see some beautiful pieces and delicious colour, and I understand a bit better what you've been working toward.

If your enthusiasm for the berry capsule has faded, though, maybe that's something to explore? I took a residential colour workshop with an amazing designer who always said that you always need to add at least one slightly clashing element to a design. Could that be what's nagging at you? I think you also made a comment earlier about it being maybe too much... Do you need a strong earth tone (cognac. mustard, even olive green -- to bring zest to your berry salad?!

Not evaluations on my part. Just questions for you to take or leave as suits you! :-)

My gear jacket (the short one) has reflective pinstripes! They light up in car headlights! It looks normal in daylight -- grey, with lighter grey pinstripes. It's definitely and clearly "gear" but quite good looking. The thing is, you have to wear it with pants. It's shorter in the front, dips longer in the back, but just looks dumb with skirts/ dresses.

The greater Victoria region is probably closer to a European city than any in Canada as regards biking. Here's a map of our paths and lanes: https://maps.crd.bc.ca/Html5Viewer/?viewer=BikeMap or https://www.crd.bc.ca/docs/def.....plan/bikem. We have several dedicated trails as well as lanes all over the place and there is a ton of attention paid to cyclists' needs. But even so -- Mr. Suz witnessed an awful accident just around the corner from us the other day. Cyclist was badly injured. Both drivers going too fast, and the auto driver missed a stop sign. It was broad daylight, so darkness wasn't a factor. But a heck of a lot of people around here wear the reflective clothing/ gear. Then again -- this is not a pure urban area, but a mix of urban, suburban, rural and people ride in from all over the district.

When I get my new mirror (tomorrow) I will snap a photo with the Columbia jacket so you can see some details.

Suz, how cool that you actually have that jacket. Thanks for posting. The “basic gear” vibe might be what I’m picking up from it. The photo on the original post is a gear jacket that fits me perfectly. It’s the one I’m referring to when I say “the old jacket does this or that”. So I guess there’s my answer about how many inches long the new jacket should be. I keep hoping for permission to cheat & go shorter. It does not have a 2-way zipper, but the front is shorter than the back.

You are correct, of course, that biking is much more common here. I couldn’t even tell you if there are particular clothes people wear for it. But I can tell you what kind of jackets came out as soon as temperature dipped: parkas and anoraks. That’s what people walking past our house are wearing, with some short leather jackets & trenchcoats thrown in. So looking for something a little dressier is fighting the environmental norm a bit. If I’m wearing an item that feels like home, I won’t mind doing that.

It is rainy here, at least for the next few months and then for a few months in spring, and our latitude is between Calgary and Manitoba, so winter nights are long. But between legally required head- and taillights on bikes, many bike lanes being separate from the road, and considerably more/better driver training than in the USA, I don’t feel a need for particularly reflective clothing. Some people wear a sash like you posted, but not many.

I’ll be interested to hear how your plan works out once things open up.

*****
I’ve taken the Orvis Pack & Go out of the running after reading through reviews and realizing that it is “water resistant” but not waterproof; several people complained about how wet they got while wearing it.

I swear I saw a woman wearing the pinstriped one last night, with bright white pants and hijab, and kinda stompy light brown boots with a chunky heel, looked really excellent. She was waiting to cross a grimy street at dusk; the white and light colored pinstripes really stood out. But I’m passing on that length for now. Might revisit it if I become a regular subway rider instead of a cycler.

I have an interest in this topic because if life ever returns to normal, I'll be using my bike to get to actual events (vs. just to go for bike rides.) At the moment, I have sporty items that work for "going for a bike ride" but fewer crossover items. Urban biking is a whole new world!

I do think Europeans do this better and more often than North Americans. Most bike commuters here wear actual gear to commute on their bikes -- and change at the office. I can see why, too, because it's often so wet. Also, it's a safety issue. Gear is usually more reflective, among other things.

On to your options. I think you would have to measure your own torso to know how long they have to be to be "just long enough" for you. And then maybe measure yourself leaning a bit forward, as on a bike.

For instance -- I actually have the Splash a Little jacket -- and I find it a bit too long (on short, short-waisted me) for super comfortable bike riding . For me, this jacket is better as a casual walking/ hiking jacket. I like it because it covers my bum and layers well, is lightweight enough to stuff into a backpack, roomy enough to layer under, and waterproof. But I rarely reach for it when I'm going on my bike.

Don't get me wrong -- it works on the bike -- it's just a tad less comfortable and more fussy than my true biking gear jacket. Also-- it still feels (to me) entirely like gear. I don't think it looks good with my regular clothing. Proportions are wrong, at least with skirts/ dresses and many pants. Your mileage may vary with that.

Here's what I think I'm going to do -- wear my gear biking jacket for bike rides in the rain, and wear my thigh length trench or my more casual utility coat, or my warmer casual rain jacket, plus some reflective stuff, if I am actually going on my bike into town and want my coat to be part of an "outfit." This might or might not work for me. I will keep you posted.

One thing to note -- if you get a coat/ jacket that is longer than waist length it really needs a double zip (so you can open it from the bottom) or else needs to be quite A line in order to work.

Angie, the internet is facilitating miscommunication again I
understand the reasons a certain amount of length is good. My
question to you was referring to how many inches long they should be
down the back—the “ number I’ve given for each jacket in the original
post.

CarolS, all I’ve ordered so far is the Laundry one from the Rack, because I was worried it might sell out. The backstory about the color is that a few years ago I saw Angie's post on tonal matching and decided I wanted to do that with all berry colors--blackberry, raspberry, cranberry, blueberry and frost pink. In the collection https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....tion=10368 (which has most of my berry stuff, but not everything), you can see that the outwear colors skate around the edges of the berry wardrobe, but none of them really fit 100%. So getting the splashy jacket should be a no-brainer because it would complete the capsule. That's why I'm scratching my head at it not calling out to me. It seems good, but not exciting, and I was so excited about this tonal colors thing, once upon a time.

I'm putting these jackets in that collection for now, just to look at pictures of the colors next to pictures of things I already have.

Rachylou, I actually don't believe her that she tried to press them back in. No way. But she did get the rest of the grime out, so that's good. The pleats are stitched in at the top, then ironed all the way down.

SF, FWIW, I see the plum colour of the splash a lot jacket as juicy and rich, and not at all sweet in any kind of cloying way. Not sure what it reads like IRL of course.

Have you decided to order any of these to look at more closely when you're in the US?

SF, short lengths that you don't sit on work well when you bike. And long lengths that you DO sit on work well because by sitting on them with the front closed - they stay put, IYKWIM. Those in-between lengths that you can't sit on completely when they are closed in front on a bike - can be bothersome, to SarahD8's point. And since you are quite tall, I'm making sure you do the sit-down test so that the length of your raincoat works well!

Oh no! What’s it made of? The pleat thing seems strange. Surely they were sewn in? A little spray starch and an iron won’t work?

Joy, I’m glad to hear the Royal Robbins get some love. I hear you on the importance of keeping dry! I’ve got good bags for that now. I wish I knew more about the fabrics, guess I’ll have to order and have a feelfest. Both the noise issue you mention and the “sweatiness” factor depend so much on fabric! These days, I don’t feel at all certain that polyester is the automatic strike it once was, as long as it’s recycled fiber—some tech weaves are very comfortable to me, and seem to “breathe” well.

Angie, thanks for weighing in. How short is too short for biking? I might borrow I bike when I try these on, so I can see how much swish I need in the A-lines.

Cat2, The more I sit with these, the more the RRs appeal to me, as well as the “urban” Orvis and the Laundry one that Sarah voted for. Are those the A-lines you’re thinking of?

I can’t for the life of me figure out why the Splash a Little makes me shrug. It ticks all the boxes. Maybe that’s why—it’s so predictable for a berry salad wardrobe. Or maybe the color is too sweet. The dark RR might be too short—I’m not sure about that. I love it’s color. Goldenrod is not a color I have much of, and would be a dramatic about-face from the goal of dressing in berry shades head to toe that I announced a couple years ago. But blue/orange and purple/gold are classic pairings across the color wheel, so maybe it would work well with my berries.

The hardest thing I ever had to replace was a water proof parka several years ago. It’s the fabric. I do not want to make noise when I move nor do I want polyester. I finally bought an REI brand that I have been somewhat happy with, but did not find the perfect replacement. You are right to prioritize a hood and internal pockets. I have had some Royal Robbins items and love them for the quality and simplicity. I would seriously consider that brand. I found out the hard way in a rain storm in Venice that waterproof and water resistant are not the same. Even with an umbrella, the coat got soaked through and took days to dry out. Be sure you have a waterproof backpack too, and waterproof footwear is important, like Aqutilia flats and booties are worth their cost.

I vote for the A-Line shapes as being both more forgiving for riding and dressier. The straight gear blobs aren’t going to pair well with your street wear, they are more for wear with jeans and really sporty gear.

RL, the skirt got caught/wrapped up between the cantilever brake and the bike tire. I could unwind it without it ripping, but when I washed out the grime, the pleats also came out. The dry cleaner says I should not have treated it at all. She got the rest of the grunge out, but says the plisse can't be ironed back in. I’m taking it to another cleaner for a second opinion on pressing it.

Skirts I can tie up while I ride. If I had done this earlier, the skirt would’ve been fine. I don’t think that works so well for a coat.

Sarah, good point about the shape of that one for bike riding. It is my son’s favorite of the lot here.

Rachylou, did you see what happened to my white skirt? I should probably take the long coat off of here. Sad face. But then it’s there for you to pick up :)

Irina, thanks for clarifying. That subtle pattern is my favorite part of that one.

ETA just added info about my current raincoat, how I’d like the new one to compare, to my original post.
