I think you're defined by your style if you've become a slave to it. Particularly those who only buy from the "it" designer of the moment for prestige sake.

On the other hand, if you like the feel of cashmere and fine silks and that dominates your wardrobe, then you are defining your style.

I'm still trying to figure out what my style is but I'm getting bolder in trying new things. When considering a new trend/look, I try to keep my shape in mind. If I admire a gal's bold print dress but I know the print would swallow up my petite body, then I would instead look for a scarf, bracelet, maybe even ballet flats that had the same bold print vibe.

I got excited about a yellow swing jacket and showed it to a friend and she said, "Oh, that bold color is so you." That surprised me because I didn't think I wore much in the way of bold colors. Although she herself tends to wear mostly black and blues so I guess to her, I do dress boldly. So that's another thing, depending on who is doing the looking your style can seem different to different people.

Definitely keeping yourself informed about style/fashion from magazines, blogs, etc. can help you fine tune/remake your style. I usually have an initial gut feeling when I see an outfit photo. "Yuck" or "That's interesting." So I pay attention to the interesting ones and further evaluate what I like about it. Is it just the colors, the way it fits the body, the textures, etc. Then I go from there and see how I can translate that into my wardrobe.

I am enjoying my style journey and I don't see the need to get to a certain point and say, "OK, I'm done learning." I look forward to keeping abreast of all there is out there and evaluating if that's something I want to try.

hmmm, yes there is a fine line between "finding your style" and getting into a style rut.
I agree that we should always be trying new things, but at the same time resolving ourselves to the fact that some things are just "not me" I think alot has to do with personality myself. I have a friend who is a little older than me and she wears some of the most creative "out there" outfits and pulls them off fabulously-- I couldn't in a million years wear some of the things she comes up with-- but she is a much more forward, outgoing personality, and I am more reserved and conservative and my style reflects that. But, at the same time I don't want to stay with the boring mom uniform outfits I had worn for so long, so I am trying hard to step out and try new things.... some I feel great in and other times I just can't quite bite the bullet and make the purchase. I am fine with that-- I have YLF to keep me looking outside the box and I know that every season my style will evolve along with my wrinkles and my lifestyle.

and, like Kristine said, this is a great place to get info on seasonal trends.... before I found YLF the season was over before I ever figured out what the trends were! Now I feel so fashion forward LOLOL

I think moms tend to say "that looks like you". They get this image of you and have a hard time letting go. I used to wear those faux suede shirts back in the 90s and for a decade afterwards she would still say "that looks like you".

Luckily, or unluckily, I don't think I've developed my individual style well enough to be in a rut. Or maybe I'm in such a rut I haven't developed my individual style! Boards like this are so helpful because you constantly get fresh ideas and feedback. Even in the few weeks I've been here I've tried new things! It also helps me follow seasonal trends, something I hardly noticed before. So being here is a great start!

Honestly, being here on this forum and reading what Angie and so many others have to say has helped me tremendously. I also like the blog "academichic" (http://www.academichic.com) because they seem always be on the lookout to try new things. I am still learning but being on here has helped me to open my eyes towards some things I would normally perhaps not look at. Angie has some wonderful blog posts about this topic. I think she calls it 'leave not retail stone unturned'. I'll see if I can dig some up. Basically, it is just saying that every store deserves a new chance, so be willing to shop at new places and I think that helps keep one's eye fresh.

I'll be curious what some of the wise ladies on here have to say about this!

Over the last few months as I've been getting acquainted with YLF, I've been thinking about what defines our individual styles. For many years as I'd shop with my mom especially, I'd gravitate towards an item of clothing and she'd say "that looks like you."

I'd smile and try the piece on (or not), but the thing was that I always considered her comment to be a confirmation of my style or just a positive comment in general.

But now I'm thinking about the line between defining your style and become defined BY your style. Which is where I've been for a long time...in a static place. And maybe "that looks like you" isn't such a good place to be.

How do you define your style? How did you redefine it? And how do you keep your eye evolving so you stay fresh?
