The Queen and her family are considered part of the Church of England aren't they? As such I figure they may wear whatever color they want (at least I thought that was the case). Other visitors are not necessarily forced to dress a certain way but then again the Pope may not show up for the meeting either.

I love the way she balances her coats on her shoulders. It's the effect of a cape with the structure of a jacket. I couldn't pull off that coat either in my daily life, but I'm sure the Italians were thrilled to see it on her. At least the ones I know are in love with bright colors and nature themes.

Such an interesting dilemma. Personally I love to see couture fashion, yet could never afford it (or would choose to wear it myself), as it is too extravagant. However, I love to watch the Chanel shows and love how couture designers influence the fashion that I can afford to buy (once it filters down from Chanel and Celine into the mainstream).

I admire how Melania wears these clothes. That is a very over the top coat, and yet she wears it well. The black lace dress is stunning on her. Like Jenni, I question her choice of spouse more than I question her clothing choices.

Melania is Catholic? Oh well now, that's just fascinating politically... I liked Ivanka's get up to meet the pope, although I also found it a little weird. Goth.

Actually neither of the Trump ladies were required to wear the traditional dress for their meeting with Pope Francis. Both Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Cornwall were recently photographed in more "normal" formal outfits. Papal dress codes, like other dress codes, have relaxed in the past few years.

What impressed me about Melania Trump's choices was her obvious desire to merge fashionability and traditional protocol in her outfits. Very intriguing lady.

i've enjoyed reading all your thoughtful commentary. i suspect the endless analysis of Melanie Trump's wardrobe is because she is an enigma. We are all looking for clues as to who she is exactly. We don't really know that much about how she thinks or what she values. We JUST found out she's Catholic, for heaven's sake...the first Catholic First Lady since Jackie Kennedy.

I do agree with Anonymous...it's a no-win gig she's a part of, that's for sure.

I can't comment on anything Dolce & Gabbana, but I LOVE the black lace dress that Melania is wearing further down. Very elegant and chic. Fabulous length. (And I JUST read that it's D&G too, which does not make me happy).

Shevia, I believe the appropriate dress for a private papal audience is as follows.

-Ladies are to wear conservative black dresses, preferably with long sleeves and collars. Hem length of skirts and dresses must be long enough to cover knees when sitting. A lady should cover her head with black veil or mantilla. Jewelry and makeup must be minimal. Gloves should not be worn inside Vatican city. Fragrances should be understated. Nail polish, if any, should be neutral or transparent. Stilettos should not be worn; shoes should be of modest height and closed, such as pumps. (Tall, strappy sandals, for example, would be inappropriate). In essence, a lady should dress as if in mourning for someone in her immediate family. Gentlemen should wear formal morning dress when the Audience is to take place in the morning and early afternoon hours (White tie dress is also appropriate though, generally, white tie is not worn before six o’clock in the evening). For late afternoon Private Audiences, white tie dress should be worn by gentlemen. When the Private Audience will occur outdoor or partially outdoor, a gentleman is expected to don his tophat. The men’s dress gloves that accessorize formal morning dress and white tie dress are not worn within Vatican City. Guests from non-Western cultures are allowed to wear national/traditional equivalent. Military equivalent is also allowed.

To a degree anyone in a privileged position can be criticised for wearing expensive clothing. Some within my workplace or circles would be horrified that I have a $450 coat.

I have been following the tour from a political perspective and have thought
Melania has looked very suitable in her clothing. Her clothes fit impeccably and I think thought has been given to the occasions and the items worn. I wonder if If she bought it herself or whether it came out if the budget for First Lady Attire?

Well I read everyone's comments before seeing the coat. I expected I'd 'eye roll' a critical opinion, but I loved it. The colours are what surprised me. That red is beautiful. ( but I'm thoroughly bored by the 'wax works' lack of animation, and dull Barbie hairstyle). But, what a tough 'no win' gig this woman is a part of.

It struck me that Melania is the only First Lady who could really get away with a $51k jacket. She's genuinely into fashion and clearly doesn't want to be First Lady/in politics. And I think that's all right. I do love Dolce & Gabbana. Although I know they have hurt people's feelings; they are consistent and don't fudge; and I appreciate that.

I read thoughtful pieces in the Washington Post and NYTimes about the coat and and Mrs. Trump's choices for the entire trip. Compared to her other choices, which were all appropriate and in character, this coat seemed like a joyful celebration of spring. In the best photo I saw she also wore a rare smile. The smile seemed natural and also joyful. Though she looked like she was going to a royal wedding, found the effect to be lovely. ETA: Whether you like it or not: Do you think there was some 'shaming' in the media?

Items like this jacket make people look at the item, not the person wearing it. A great solution for people who don't have anything interesting to say - their outfit guarantees that at least part of their outward appearance will be noticed and maybe even remembered. :-D

BTW, I far prefer Kaffe Fassetts knitting designs.

Well I adore the coat. D and G are the high-end designers whose work I love the most, seeing pics in magazines like Vogue I am drawn to their ads. I've recently looked into Kibbe types and suspect I'm a Theatrical Romantic which explains why I love their stuff. I am aware of the controversy around their 2015 remarks and an earlier one about whether they paid enough tax. Since I won't be buying due to cost I am only looking at the aesthetic. Maybe she is not going to look deeper at philosophical/ethical/moral questions. If she were, how could she be married to him?

I think the coat looks like a child's craft project gone horribly wrong. I've also never been a fan of D&G; it veers too far into over-the-top maximalism for my taste.

That said, I agree that Mrs Trump isn't concerned with statements, and generally appears to be dressing very "correctly" or "situationally appropriately" in mostly tasteful clothing. This coat was a bit of an anomaly for so many reasons.

I've been struck by how much thought Melania Trump put into her overseas wardrobe. She hit the mark in so many ways and so often, this choice came as a bit of a shock. Giving a nod to Italian designers when visiting Italy is a nice gesture for a visiting First Lady, but this particular coat was such a show stopper, it seemed destined to be become known by its price tag.

Unlike some of the other commenters, I think Melania Trump put a lot of thought and effort into her clothing choices for this trip and was very aware of the symbolism and messages attached to her outfits. As a Canadian, I'm alternately baffled and appalled by her husband, but I'm starting to admire Melania Trump's ability to be so spot-on with her clothing choices. That's why the "wealthy trophy wife" look of this coat came as such a surprise.

Someone on Twitter described the jacket like this:

"No.
It looks like someone spilled Elmers glue on a coat and then vomited Pinterest flowers onto it."

That pretty much sums up my personal view on it from an aesthetic standpoint. I have very much liked many of the other outfits I've seen her photographed in. I just don't care for maximalism.

I have no opinion about the symbolism. I don't get the sense this First Lady is interested in sending messages with her clothing, beyond looking appropriate and attractive. And I think that is just fine.

I don't disagree with the article. However, I think this has more to do with awareness than anything else. Things are not necessarily going swimmingly with the administration. The First Lady's fashion choices are ALWAYS debated, regardless of which party in in office. Had I been in her place, I would have sought to keep the attention (and hence the potential criticism) away from myself. This strikes me as the blouse issue during the campaign. Again, nothing at all wrong with her choice of what to wear, but someone should have been more aware of the potential implications - aides or press secretary or someone. So I don't see her choice of what to wear as cruel or uncaring or fiddling while Rome burns, but I DO see it as oblivious. Oblivious to her own symbolism, oblivious to what others will will always talk about, oblivious to the importance of the trip she is on and how closely it is being watched by the public worldwide, and even oblivious to the controversy that still haunts D&G after their controversial comments in 2015.
