Shannon, the cattle are Brangus -- Angus/Brahman hybrids, and we're breeding them with Hereford bulls for Black Baldy calves. I know more about cows now than I ever expected to know! LOL

Oh, forgot to answer rain question! Yes, there's been a little rain, but a few weeks ago. More on the way this week. We're very lucky -- there are lots of springs under our land, and a good sized stream runs through the property. My husband excavated a 14 acre lake that filled itself completely from the springs -- it was unusable swampy muck before. Talk about lucky!

Here are some iPhone snaps of the land and the lake, including fireworks we set off from the island on the 4th of July!

You are indeed living the dream Janet. I grew up in farming country and it took me quite a while to adjust to city living. There's something about all encompassing quiet and big sky...

Gaylene, how cool! My husband would love to see that -- and so would I! He is dying to visit Montana and the more northern ranching country.

April, I'm laughing and shaking my head in disbelief all the time. My husband grew up in the area where his ranch is now, so it's a familiar world to him. He left east TX straight out of high school, so it's funny that he's back there, although we have no intention of ever moving there full time.

After 10+ years of owning a small IT business, he was eager to try something new. He gets bored after a while. He and his brother wanted to start some kind of venture together, and they started looking at land, and before you know it, they have 450 acres, clearing tree stumps (it was a timber farm), building fences, and buying cattle!

They grew up with the whole Lonesome Dove cowboy romance deeply ingrained in them, so this is kind of a dream come true for my husband, even though he never thought he'd actually get the chance to do this. It's all new to me! The closest I came to all of this as a kid was going to the state fair, and seeing the tractors my dad's company sold (he worked for John Deere for 40 years). :-)

But it's funny, we sit on the patio of the shop house with our coffee in the morning and realize we're living the dream.

Janet, how *did* you manage to end up ranchers? And apparently from a distance? Inquiring minds (who also divide their time between two states) want to know!

Great pictures, Janet. I grew up in Alberta ranching country so I know about the work--and the joys--of cattle ranching. One of my best friends is a computer programmer during the week and a cattle rancher's wife on the weekend with two sons who are into rodeo as was their father. It's fun to get back out in the foothills with her on a horse when they move their herds to the high country for the summer. Hard work and long days, but the scenery is always glorious. Brokeback Mountain was filmed near their spread.

Just got home from Texas and thought I'd share pics of the growing furbabies down there. Sunny is getting so big! She's now 6 months old and is starting to look like a DOG, not a puppy. She is a great ranch dog -- she learns so fast, and she's such a sweetie too.

Dusty kitty has remained small but he still holds his own in the MMA smackdown playtime sessions with the dog.

Also, some pics of the herd, which now includes seven bulls (in addition to the 125 or so heifers, plus 70+ calves). More calves next spring! It's a beautiful place, and the cows seem healthy and happy. I never in my life thought we'd be ranchers!
