Sounds like it could replace both the beige and burgundy trenches, so I'm here to enable the purchase :-). I think the black colour looks more sleek and would be more versatile, but either is nice.

I'm not sure that I would say sporty, exactly, but maybe that's due to my definition of sporty. My most common outfit is jeans, boots, sweater, trench, and enormous bag. I do frequently go out for walks in the countryside or on the coast, and spend a fair amount of time in the great outdoors in my line of work. But I haven't been on board with the refined athletic gear look, like the leather sweatpants and high heel sneakers, so in that sense I'm not sporty.

Anyway, what I have now for outerwear:

Wool winter coats: black Army surplus reefer, black duffle, grey car coat

Blazers: black and white tweed, green cord, white linen, ivory canvas

Trench coats: beige cotton, burgundy with zip-out lining, short lightweight bright red

Gear: red and grey raincoat, plus a lightweight packable red windbreaker

Other: black denim, blue denim, blue plastic bomber, black puffer, black cotton biker

The ones I wear the most are the short red trench, black denim, black puffer, and the tweedy blazer. My two "gear" jackets are ok but they are very much gear, and I would not wear them anywhere that wasn't part of a hike. My other two trench coats are not that versatile (the burgundy doesn't go with that much plus it's a bit too big, the beige one is canvas, not waterproof), and many of the others are either strictly winter or very short.

Hmm, I think I'm trying to talk myself into it!

Incidentally, they also have it in silver.

If your casual style has a sporty edge I can completely see this jacket taking you from the beach to the local and back again. If your everyday style is not at all sporty then I feel this would be a miss.

Good questions, all! Rae, is that Stella jacket the one you were looking at? Your thread is in part what made me start thinking about this. I do like it but it's way too expensive for me and sadly their sizing isn't big enough for me.

I'll go do a little inventory and post the results for evaluation.

I'm considering the North Face Stella at Nordstrom for the same reasons. Have you seen it?

I really like it and would try it out. I think it is hard to find the right one as I have been looking for quite some time. Where is this one from?. I agree with Rae - could you purchase it and see if it works?

I can totally see this working as you describe. Can you create some outfits around this parka for all the events you need it for? If you can return it, you could even do this test at home before deciding.

I think it's a very good looking jacket, not too gearish but still casual. I can see it worn over nice trousers or a skirt and tights if you wanted to dress it up a bit. But I agree with Thistle - before you buy it, look at all your existing jackets and be sure that this one ticks the boxes that they don't.

Not familiar with your weather. I personally don't think it is very "dressy'. But I have no idea how dressy you are looking for! :)

You said you have a lot of coats already. Before you splurge, I would really take a look at those and why they don't work. Make sure you aren't repeating a mistake you have already made (says someone with experience in that area )

I'm forever searching for the right versatile black jacket -- something that can be worn in relatively rugged situations, like walking in the woods or on the coast, but can also be worn for "dressy casual" situations like going to the pub. Somehow I have acquired many jackets and coats but they all seem limited in one way or another (too heavy, too thin, too short, too gearish).

Anyway this is just a long introduction to this parka-like jacket. I have seen it in person and it has nice silk-like fabric but I think it is actually water-resistant, and it is some kind of nylon so I could probably treat it with waterproofing spray if necessary. It is very lightweight (like a windbreaker) but also roomy enough to layer.

I am hesitating, though, because it is rather expensive for me. Does it look like it has potential, or is it too much of a raincoat look? In theory I would treat it like a trench coat.
