I know I'll definitely update my wardrobe every season--I love seeing all the "new" colors and silhouettes they introduce. Plus, I can never pass up buying at least one new blouse when the new stuff comes in! It'd sure be nice to have sort of a "staple" wardrobe that I didn't need to replace that often--jeans, denim skirts, boots, a coat, a fantastic white blouse (or two or three--hee, hee) etc. J. Crew will always be on my list of favorite places to shop. There's rarely a period where they don't have something I think is great. Last fall they had some fantastic wool blazers in nice colors like citron and pink, but I missed out. I'm hoping they'll bring some more out this fall, since a nice, tailored blazer or two is definitely on my list. The items I've gotten there recently I completely love! Even though they're J. Crew, they're really different for me, because I always used to avoid dry clean clothing, so I never wore fabrics like silk, ever. I think it's become my new favorite fabric! I put it on and instantly feel girly and chic. I know personally I have a tendency to want to buy a bunch of different stuff, because I think somehow that gives me more choices, but the flip side is that I get overwhelmed and end up not wearing half of it. I'm trying now to focus on combining what I have in new ways (reigning myself in), and picking up some pieces that I never wore before (like skinnies, clamdiggers, tunics, skirts and boots) and more accessories rather than just more clothes. Major updating is not a seasonal necessity Ana, unless your wardrobe is in desperate need of it. But seasonal tweaks are a must. I have not come across a wardrobe that hasn’t benefitted from a seasonal tweak. How you choose to update is when things become interesting. Personality, lifestyle and budget play a major role. I’m a firm believer in having fewer fabulous things than a whole slew of mediocre things. You should have seen how fast I went through the transaction. It was electric. I'm wiping sweat beads off my forehead. If I did, I would go entirely crazy. I feel like no matter how "finished" I think I am with my wardrobe, there's always something missing, even without paying attention to trends. The good thing about a shopping ban is that it helps you understand what's missing from your wardrobe, and what should have priority. This shopping ban has put dresses high on my list of priorities. Every year of my life until now, I have continued to wear jeans all year long--even on the most blistering hot days of summer, so I thought my many pairs of jeans, in all different washes and cuts, meant that my wardrobe is fine the way it is. But now I think dresses would be a lot more comfortable, and a lot easier to wear while still looking great. On days when I don't want to wear dresses, I would prefer some clams or walk shorts, which are also lacking. So my shopping ban has lead me to conclude that I have to get rid of some of my jeans and replace them with dresses and cropped pants. If I didn't go on a shopping ban, I would probably have bought a lot of things I don't really need before realizing that I do need dresses and crops. All of this means that I will give in easily to temptation, but never on frivolous things. One way or another, I'm going to get that Free People dress. If anything, it will just make me even more determined to finally find a job (still no luck on that end). I also feel like that dress is something I SHOULD be able to afford. It's pricey but not that extravagant, like a DVF dress, so that adds to my frustration and temptation. It really is the exact kind of dress I have been waiting for, so if I pass on it I know I will regret it. Year to year, I don't find I need to update my wardrobe to incorporate styles and trends that are of the moment. I think what you want to do is very possible, and probably the most practical thing to do Ana. Falling all over every single trend is a PITA, impractical, and probably not even a good idea from a style standpoint. After all, not every trend is going to flatter you. I've been thinking a lot about this lately, because in the past I've always had a closet completely STUFFED with clothes, but felt overwhelmed and like I had nothing to wear. I'm trying to avoid that since I seriously edited my closet a few months back, and it's actually been a lot easier since coming to the forum. I'm really starting to feel like I want to be choosy when I add something to my wardrobe, and I'd rather buy something fantastic that I really really love (even if I have to save up for a while) than 3 or 4 things that are "serviceable." I'm lucky, because I don't have too many gaps in my wardrobe at the moment (handbags, shoes and jeans being the biggest ones), so I can take some time in deciding what I want to add. Have you all found this to be pretty typical, or do you find that every season you have to do some major updating from what you had last year? I'd really like to avoid this, and be able to wear my things for several years, while adding a trendy piece here and there to stay current. Is this possible? You can scarcely imagine how many clothes I’ve seen and continue to see. As a fashion buyer, you see collection upon collection upon collection. Quite easily 200 collections in one season across all price points and all body types and I did that for many years. I continue to see vast amounts of clothes in my line of work, and for someone that sees and works with clothes so much, my temptations are both multi and minimal. Multi, because I see so much and minimal because I pride myself with a small efficient wardrobe. So contrary to what people might expect, I don’t buy or give into temptation easily. I suppose temptation and fantasy are closely related in my mind because I do not leave a retail stone unturned when it comes to purchasing a product. The same way I did when I was a buyer. If you have a $500 budget in one fashion season: are you going to blow it on one piece or on several? This depends on what state your wardrobe is in. I know people that will buy one designer piece all season and that’s that. Effective wardrobe building is becoming a science . I simply love it! I’m most tempted by new trends and colours. These are the retail aspects I find most exciting. I love to have fun with fashion and I’m at an age where I can still have fun. So I’m milking that cow before I start looking daft. In fact, I have only tried the style that I have. The pair that I have are fairly comfortable (as comfortable as shoes get for me), but like I said, they just don't look like $500 shoes. Since I got them for only $70, it was fine with me, but they would have been on a plane back to Zappos if I had paid full price. I also noticed her designs are just getting farther and farther from her original mission of making healthy footwear. Now she is more or less like any other shoe designer, minus the pointy toes. The dress is available in red on the FP website for $69. I might try giving them a call and seeing if there is a store that has the white one in my size, and if they can ship it to me. It worked with Anthropologie once. Couldn't hurt. I think I interpret temptation as something different than everyone else. I wouldn't even be tempted by those things Angie posted, beautiful as they are, because they are so expensive that there would never be a point in my life or a situation where I would even consider spending that much. Regarding the patent boots, they are currently available on another website for $90, which I believe to be a very good deal on them, but that website has not so great shipping-return policies, so I'd be basically be ordering them in two sizes from Zappos, figuring out which ( and if at all) I like, returning them both and then getting them in the right size from the cheaper website. Too bad Zappos doesn't price match anymore. And this shall not be breaking my shopping ban, since my BF would be getting them for me as an anniversary present ( at this point we just ask each other to choose a present within a certain price range). Now I love them, but am not 100 % sure if I'd be comfortable wearing such a big patent piece. I read somewhere that patent is waterproof ( please correct me of I'm wrong) so their main purpose would be for wet weather, worn with tucked in skinnies, and sometimes worn with pants over. My dear Tanya, how can I refuse your beautiful batting eye-lids. Stay tuned. IMO, patent has become a basic. A pair of patent boots is a lot of patent to commit to. You need to wear them in an urban way. (Reduce the “glitz factor”). The boots you’ve dog-eared are gorgeous! A big thumbs up. Are the “socks” attached? I have two pairs of knee high patent boots. Cream with faux horn buckles; and a black, wedged pair (patent in front and waterproof microfiber at the back). Both are 8 hour walking shoes. If you think you’d be comfortable wearing knee high patent boots, go for it. Ana, I’d save indefinitely if you loved something and think you’d always love it. But you don’t want to save for something that you can’t enjoy relatively soon once you’ve purchased it because weather patterns have changed, or your body and lifestyle have changed. Hope that makes sense. That’s why I suggested you wait to purchase your trench. I’m deeply disappointed with Taryn Rose. I’d consider paying for her shoes, blow my budget and call it a day if they pleased my feet. Her shoes are nothing to write home about as far as comfort goes. In fact they’re uncomfortable. I’ve tried lots, LOTS of her shoes (both pairs you’ve linked to Maya, because they lit my fire and we do indeed have that similar taste thing going), and every single one of them has been returned. Granted, fussy feet are fussy in different ways.
