This very kind neighbour of ours found out that we didn't have enough $ to get my prom dress so she brought over some lovely evening gowns. I wore a shoulder-less, full length A line coral dress with a black lace wrap, black pumps and a silver and black clutch, accented with silver jewelry. It looked really great and I felt great in it. In fact, my ensemble was the only thing great about that evening! Found out date was gay (I'd been pining for him all year), didn't get invited to any after hours parties and my date and another boy got into a food fight at the prom. I didn't have a date but went to prom anyway because it was what "everyone" did. I had a really difficult time finding a dress in my size so I settled on this brown thing. It was extremely expensive and looking back I feel ridiculously guilty spending my mom's money on something so frivolous and unnecessary. The dress still sits in my closet at home. I think the outlet was in San Francisco so it was a reasonable price - I had a boy say something not very nice to me about that dress that put me in tears . . . ah well, 13 year old girls are easy to make cry! This pattern photo is the best image I could find that resembles the dress I wore to prom in 1978. My dress looked almost exactly like the middle dress in this image except it was pastel peach. My boyfriend wore a yellow tux...yes, yellow! Later that same year I wore a yellow version of almost the same dress as a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding. It was actually the first dress that I tried on, buy my mom and I scoured the entire mall (Bellevue Square) just to make sure it was indeed my favorite. The dress was a huge change from my usual jeans, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and tennis shoes uniform in high school, but I loved it. The only part I wasn't fond of was the bejeweled star thing on the bust, but my mom convinced me not to cut it off. Oh, and the shoes were borrowed from my mom and I wasn't too fond of those either. But otherwise I loved the outfit. They used roughly 50 bobby pins and a TON of hairspray, and by 11pm all of the curls had gone straight.
