chiming in to say I too find JCrew a bit too preppy for me, but like Madewell's style. I'm on the tall side and find all of their dresses run too short for me, but have had much success with their tops, regular and tall high waisted skinny jeans, leather bags and shoes. The tops tend to be boxy and oversized, so I often size down. The quality seems pretty good to me for the price, and their color palette feels fresh yet neutral-friendly to me.

edited to add - I have also bought a few of their tshirts and tanks, lured by hard to find colors. They tend to last a couple of seasons for me before starting to look too shapeless and worn. I find Everlane's Tshirts to be of better quality, but they have a different fit. Madewell's are a bit oversized and loose.

I love the Madewell look. I agree with others about the difference between J Crew and Madewell. J Crew is just a bit too preppy for me. Unfortunately there is not a Madewell near me. I have heard that Madewell fits differently than J Crew.

In the mall shop, nothing has caught my eye, the few times I've wandered in. The proportions don't look like they'd work for my body. And the quality of the few garments I've looked at doesn't seem to warrant the price, even at their discounts.

The one Madewell piece I do own is a workhorse, though. Wide-leg crops showed up on an NR clearance rack, jumped into my cart because they're in white denim, and rang up for under $20 with tax. Culottes was a trend I was happy to sit out, but these are well-made, comfortable, and the cut somehow works.

Glad to hear Mel's tip about the t-shirts; I'll look at those more carefully.

My sister shops Madewell for tees because she says that last much longer than other brands.

I have one Madewell striped ponte top that I love and get lots of compliments on. Very "well made": bright colors, substantial cloth, well sewn, and holds up great in the delicate wash. I would have never paid the $118 original price for it though (I got it NWOT for $27.50 off Tradesy). Like most American mall brands, the prices are jacked up so you'll be enticed by the sales. This top to me is worth maximum $50-60.

Well, as usual you have all provided a huge amount of terrific info! There is a Madewell in one of the malls I visit regularly and I've only been in once or twice and just kind of wandered around with no focus and walked out with no real interest in going back. . Next time I'm there I'll definitely stop in and try on some things with all of these great recommendations in mind.

I've had success at Madewell with a variety of items -- a handbag, one of my favorite coats, a pair of shorts, and a bunch of tees. Their casual vibe works better for me than JCrew, and their cuts do too. I've only tried jeans on there once or twice, and even though I've not bought jeans from them, they seem to cut a bit less straight than JCrew (I'm convinced JCrew hates my body type).

I have particularly good experience with their summer tees and tanks - Some in linen blend, and some cotton. Good summer basics for me that have washed and worn well. The linen tees are a little on the thin side but are going into their third year of wear and look pretty good.

I have bought several items at Madewell in previous seasons. Some terrific elevated basics, a few of which are shown below. This season, the offerings seem much fussier and younger - perhaps the result of the new designer's esthetic? Unfortunately, I have a pretty large store credit there, so need to find something I can use it on.
I do often like their jewelry, especially the brass - I prefer it to gold-plated which I often find too shiny.
I agree 100% with Texstyle about the poor quality of the tees now, and the nice quality of the Courier shirt. Unfortunately, the Courier is just too oversized for me. I have some linen tees from 2 or 3 seasons ago that still look and feel great, despite heavy wear and laundering.
It's hard for me to speak to sizing, as J Crew fits me well, and so does Madewell. But my Madewell pieces have tended to be flowier fits, so I think they would suit a larger variety of body types.

I've only tried their shirtdresses sold at Nordstrom: An olive green one kept by Mochi, a denim one (both sold at NAS IIRC), and the flannel one shown below. I am 5' 1" with short arms and heavy upper arms, and astonishingly, all three dresses fit even in the arms. I found the length fine, neither too short nor too long. I have narrowish shoulders and had to size down so the dresses didn't look like nightgowns. Normally, I take P2-P4 or P4 in dresses and a 2 in regular sizes. In Madewell shirtdresses, I take XXS!!!

I returned the olive dress because the color isn't too great on me, and the denim went back because it was similar to one I own or maybe I felt it was too short.

I have eyed some of their tops before, but have very poor success with J Crew fits, and wondered if these would be similar. I find the shoulder usually too narrow for me there. Texstyle is a great salesperson though, so I would also consider the courier top with seems to have a more relaxed shoulder line (but perhaps too boxy). With free ship and free return, it might be worth a shot sometime.

I have three Madewell items: a secondhand Fleet Jacket in dark grey, a little bandana in an elusive shade of sage/faded olive (purchased w/ store credit), and a pair of Langford wide leg crops in a russet color (new, deeply discounted at Nordstrom, haven't cut tags yet). I've been curious about the Courier shirts, but *really* do not need any more tops this year. The pants fit great, but I've returned a bunch of jeans that I thought I would love and didn't. The jacket is really nice, almost perfect, I just wish it had a little extra room in the shoulders. So, I think some of their fits are too straight/rectangular for me, but not to the same degree that J Crew has been lately. And I think Madewell's sizing and quality are more consistent.

Like Viva says, they have a very West Coast vibe. I grew up in New England and I didn't understand the Madewell look until I'd lived in southern Nevada for a while. Those oversized cotton shirts stopped looking ridiculous and started looking... comfortable. I'm not surprised that Madewell works so well for Texstyle! (Ironically, the original Madewell was a brand with deep New England roots...)

The colors tend to be a little muted and washed out for me -- I prefer to take one piece and mix it with stronger colors from my existing wardrobe. The grey jacket, for instance, looks great with deep red or burgundy underneath. And if I keep the russet pants, I'll probably wear them most often with navy/white or black/white tops.

Also, if you don't have a Madewell close to you, sign up for "Madewell Insiders" on the website -- it gives you free return shipping and a $25 gift card on your birthday.

I no longer live close to a Madewell and miss having one nearby! Viva nailed the J Crew / Madewell comparison. Madewell has a great tomboy vibe that I love.

I have a bunch of their whisper tees, and a striped button down shirt that unfortunately is a bit too snug on me these days but I still love it. I do think their sizing runs a little smaller than J Crew (which definitely is more forgiving).

If JCrew is a preppy New England girl, then Madewell is her relaxed cool cousin from the West Coast. The vibe is more boho, looser, and sometimes a bit fashion-forward compared to JCrew but still fairly mainstream. I have three Madewell items in my closet and all are workhorses: a gray wool shift I have had for 5 or 6 years, and two pairs of skinny (but not sausage) jeans from this year -- coated black and dark blue. I should look at Madewell more often.

I got several pieces at Madewell this year and I am pleased with the quality. J Crew is a bit too preppy for me (and I'm not the right shape for their typical fit) so Madewell works better for me. I'm probably only an inch taller than shiny but I guess our proportions are different because tops, a dress, and a pair of shorts all worked for me.

I have a closet full of Madewell items - mostly button downs in varous colors and plaids. The shorts and pants have not worked for me so far that I've tried but I've only tried a couple of items.

The button downs I have are all the "Courier" style which is boxy and large (more tomboy) so if you like fitted, this style would not be best. Here in Texas I need the loose fit for our heat. Sometimes I semi-tuck, but often I just wear them untucked with slim bottoms.

The navy eyelet button down I LOVE because it looks dressier and more interesting than a simple tee but feels so comfortable and offers me air conditioning - I just wear a navy bralette under it. It has held up well so far with delicate washing and mostly air drying.

I have a slightly thicker cotton white short sleeve that I also find to be very nice and comes out of the wash without requiring a lot of ironing. I also have a couple of plaids - one very light cotton lawn and one slightly heavier.

The whisper cotton tees are delicate and not recommended unless you are ready to treat them more delicately or they will get holes. I usually get these on sale and I am careful with them at first, then if they get holes I demote them to lounge wear. I like that they are so lightweight.

I've also purchased a necklace before from Madewell and I wear it all the time. I'm sorry I don't have a find for it - it's a gold "orb" on a simple gold chain that has nice weight to it.

The flannel oversized shirt and musica tee I bought last year to wear in winter and I enjoyed wearing both a few times so far and will wear it again this winter.

Overall I've been satisfied with my purchases from them.

I like their simple pieces and (presumed) quality, but have never had any luck there, as the sizing doesn't seem quite scaled for petites. Might work for someone 5'3, but not for someone 5'0. I've tried shopping there 3 or 4 times, including trying on tons of items. Everything seemed "off" vertically for me.

That said, no, I didn't get the impression the clothing is cut for a rectangular shape like Jcrew.

I only have one Madewell item--a cropped twill vest. I love the style, and it is a staple in my wardrobe. The $88 I paid for it seemed pricey at the time, but it has become a wardrobe staple with a low CPW.

What do you like about the brand? How would you compare it t other brands you like? What is the fit like, in other words are they mostly slim fits like their parent company JCREW, or are the fits something else?
