I have an extensive bag collection, built up over a number of years. I really look after my bags - they get polished (if leather) or sprayed with fabric protector (if fabric), stored in their cotton bags and filled with stuffing. I tend to switch out my bags on an almost daily basis and love to use them all. These are some of my favourites, I like having a range of sizes and colours. The small box clutch is used the least, but I am really happy to have it in my collection as my evening bag. Other than the three tote bags, they can all be worn cross body as well as hand held.

I love handbags to add some color and shape to an outfit. Tote bags are the most practical for me to carry all my stuff in, but I have been moving away from them from the style perspective, as I find they can look large and overwhelming.

This white bag (now somewhat grungy and maybe due for an Oxi-clean treatment) has been making the rounds with me this summer.

The other one is my last-summer bag that I may pull out again for a last August hurrah.

These 2 are my workhorses.
The black tote is new this year, cause my other black purse was too small for my sunglasses, both phones, etc, etc..
The cognac is just the perfect little medium size bag. I'm hoping it returns in the burgundy color this fall!

Synne, I occasionally see someone unfolding one to pack & then schlepp off to the parking garage, but our groceries get a lot of foot traffic & a few bikes.

FI, no! I got the idea from German food blogger Sally's Welt. Maybe bringing your own crate is common in Germany? I get some weird looks here from time to time, but I don't mind

Wow what gorgeous bag collections here!! Fun to see how "you" each and every collection is, unique to the owner. I am not a bag person... I love the idea, and definently recognize the style statement it can add, but I don't know why I never reach for mine.. Even in grocery stores I bring a foldable crate rather than reusable bag (!).
I love leaving my phone at home, and we have a special secret space for house keys outside. I usually cram my payment card holder in the back pocket of my jeans. When it comes to wipes or stuff to freshen up my make-up etc. I have extras of everything I need at work, in my car, at my parents, etc.

About internal organization—maybe you’d like a pocket for those sunglasses. One half of my little cognac leather bag is the right size for a pair of shades, and then everything else could go on the other side.

Btw, have you seen that handbags are now a better investment than whiskey, cars, & art? https://www.google.com/amp/s/w.....n-art/amp/ Here are Christie’s guides to buying them, including how to build a collection https://www.christies.com/features?CategoryID=14 I’m happy with my downscale utilitarian bags, tyvm.

I love bags and I have a lot. In any store, bags are the first thing I look at. In my 30s and 40s, my bags were BIG. And they were stuffed to the gills. I ended up with the neck and shoulder pain to prove it. Enter cross body bags. Oh, the freedom! Not to mention less weight. I've never looked back. As much as I love bags, I never take one when I'm out walking, running errands, or going to a doctor's appointment. I just take a card case with my ID, credit cards and metro pass. The case is small enough to slip in a pocket. I look forward to going out again in the future and using some of my lovely bags.

I am becoming more of a bag person. My current bags are below (plus I have some clutch bags).

The crossbody are perfect in the weekend or evening when I walk to the cinema. The Furla is good for more formal work occasions. The pink straw is just a piece of summer in a bag.

The black is my work laptop bag - functional and basic.

I also have a large basket bag tote which I use a lot for the market and on vacation and in the summer for trips on foot. If I added anything else it would be a similar large unstructured tote for the winter.

I’m definitely a bag person. I have a lot and rotate regularly. I look for something that adds something to my outfits, as well as functionality. So I like features like texture (croc, suede etc), whip stitching, colour blocking, metallic effects, ombré, embellishment (rings, buckles, zippers), pattern, interesting shape. These are some examples.

Janet, you can send me all your bags when you are done.

The older I get the less i tolerate excess weight on my shoulder so that is the primary consideration. Also, backpacks to evenly distribute weight.

BUT, if I’m in a no-schlep sitch, I go as small as possible. With a long enough strap so the bag hits right at my hipbone.

Actually, my favorite is whatever mr bj1111 is willing to carry when I get tired!

Call me Cheap Bag Person. I strive to buy bags scaled to my 5' 1" self so that doesn't leave much. I also try not to weigh myself down, and I have a very strong preference for hands free, and my narrow shoulders do much better with cross-body vs. over the shoulder.

My favorites are the two Rebecca Minkoff bags. Next, I try to use the Ms. Marsha P. Johnson bag which is TINY. Next used is probably fluffy, and then the cognac bag which is smaller than it looks.

I haven't used the NAS sling bag yet (too large), and the silver clutch and gray Street Level bags at the bottom are rarely used because they hold almost nothing.

And if I know I am going into Chinatown these days I won't wear a bag because there have been too many purse snatchings.

I think you’re asking good questions. I’m currently in a more casual, less stiff and structured era of bags, with some exceptions. I have some that just feel too dressy for my usual routine right now, and I have no plans to adopt a more formal life or activities, but sometimes it’s nice to have a bit more tailored, polished style for when I’m going to meet a client or something like that. Or sometimes I’m just in a mood to lean more in that direction and “dress up.”

In addition to the practical considerations, which you seem to already have a good grasp on, I would think about your favorite outfits and ensembles and ask yourself if you think they need a more polished accompaniment or something to tone them down and casualize the look. What colors are your footwear and would you like to build complements (something that is very helpful to me)?

Thanks so much all! You’ve given me a lot to think about.
I’m narrowing down some parameters for my next addition(s):
Shoulder bag or crossbody is fine (I already have a newer work tote I like a lot).
Must be large enough to fit a big sunglasses case, slim card holder, keys, masks, a few small odds and ends, and phone. The sunglasses case is the chunkiest thing which makes it difficult to carry say, a camera bag. (I just got new sunglasses and am determined to take care of them instead of throwing them in my bag.).
I’m not fussy about whether or not bags have a lot of internal structure, dividers and pockets, though most of mine currently don’t.
I think my objective after basic functionality is to add some polish and sophistication- loaded terms, I know. For me, I’m wondering if trying a structured style would be a good thing to try. For example, right now my two larger bags that fit the parameters above are a Madewell Transport tote and a similarly shaped All Saints square shoulder bag, both which carry pretty slouchy, but they also feel like me…I guess I’d like to try a dressier style.

I'm not super into handbags (in comparison to boots!) but I do have several crossbody bags for casual wear, and several large totes for work. I like crossbody bags to be on the smaller side, leather, with silver or no hardware. I have several from Rebecca Minkoff, and one each from AllSaints, Emm Kuo, Furla, and Zara.

Tote bags need to be roomy (fit a 13" laptop, plus books, files, etc.), ideally have some structure so they sit on their own, and have shoulder straps long enough to carry on my shoulder (vs. in my hand like a tote). I have one each from AllSaints, Baggu, Giulia Massari, and Rag & Bone.

I’m a bag person. I have quite a collection, but I don’t part with them easily, as I sometimes cycle them in and out of use as trends or my needs shift. I have a little holding zone for ones that are not currently getting used but that I think I may someday want to use again.

These days, I favor crossbody or clutch-to-crossbody convertible bags, or refined backpack styles.

I do still use my larger totes on days when I need to carry more, or a satchel or should bag from time to time, but those are not getting a lot of use at the moment. I still like them, so I keep them because I figure we won’t be in a pandemic forever and my needs may well change. These finds are some of my collection.

I’m definitely a bag person. When I post a WIW, I always include my bag. I like a bag with a long strap for wearing crossbody, but not a “crossbody” which tends to be too small. A satchel with little handles and a long strap is ideal. I like a zip top for security. I also have a lot of vintage Coach bags that I’ve thrifted. Coach aficionados would be shocked, but I remove the hang tags. I don’t like extraneous things dangling on my bags. I don’t know how many bags I have, but it’s a lot.

I use waist bags and then crossbodies
and then backpacks. I’m all about the ergonomics. I have a top handle proper purse, but it also has an optional crossbody strap. I really like feet on a purse and pass on anything with an opening smaller than its base. And the bag really needs to be lightweight.

Not a handbag person, but I have stuff to carry! I have several styles, but they are all hands free. No tote bags either, because I find myself scrunching up that arm like a chicken wing.

As I moved through grad school, I moved from backpack book bag to a pannier to a messenger bag. Kept the last through the years I was teaching at universities, and afterwards for a while until about 10 years ago I realized I wasn’t putting anything into it. Enter the cognac bag I carried on my bike earlier today. The strap snaps on/off, so it could be carried as a clutch, but I’ve never done that. It’s much smaller than it looks in the find, a bit bigger than a cell phone, but it has perfect organizers—3 slots for cards, a zipper compartment for bills, a divider down the middle, outside zipper pocket for my phone. I love it.

But I didn’t always feel cognac was the right color, so when I saw a Coach mini on sale for $25, I grabbed it. Still has an outside pocket for the phone, but inside is just a dark hole, shaped in a way that makes it harder to see into, so I got a mesh bag, like a pencil case, as an organizer.

I never thought of myself as a purse person, but did sometimes want to carry a snack or my gym clothes, so I got the green and cream ones for around $50 each maybe 5 and 4 years ago. They’re OK, and are big enough for my 11” laptop (cream) or iPad (green), but sort of neither hot nor cold. The green suede one had a shoulder strap that was too short to carry it cross-body, so I added a guitar strap. I thought I was going to love that bag to death, but it’s aging very rapidly. It’s from Free People, so maybe intended as more of a fashion thing & less long-lived than I prefer.

When we moved to Berlin 3 years ago, I got the backpacks. They are very useful. I can carry my jar salad and bowl in one, or my swim stuff. The blue desigual at $50 was a test to see if I liked carrying one. I did, so Santa brought me the red Coach. The little handle at the top really improves functionality, IMO. The outside pocket on the red one is pretty useless, but the blue one has an outside zipper pocket on the side facing my back; that’s where I keep my phone.

But wait, there’s more. The great big groovy green crossbody was cheap as chips, fits absolutely everything, has a slip pocket inside and a zipper across the top. It is bigger than the backpacks. I can forget about it entirely, just like the tiny bags.

The little blue one is from earlier this year, about the same price as the green one, around €20 each. It’s a little odd. So small only keys, wallet, phone & mask fit, and that just barely. But in summer it feels too big & bulky. In winter I often have pockets for those things. Sigh. I should’ve kept looking for the flatter style I really want ( https://www.sundancecatalog.co.....rom=Search ) but I wear it occasionally. I bet we are going to see more bags that transition from crossbody/shoulder to belt bags.

Latest editions are back to the future—panniers! They have shoulder straps. The blue is utilitarian, and entirely waterproof. The botanical is not quite as waterproof, but I don’t plan on standing outside in a downpour. I think it’ll be fine for the rain it’s typically going to be exposed to. I think it’s cool because of how easily it transitions to shoulder bag or backpack.

I don’t have a favorite—they each have their time to shine

I LOVE handbags. My favourite wardrobe item. I have many and use them all :)

Personally, I like them: structured, dressy, very good quality, modern classic, simple and without bells and whistles, with a zipper closure, crossbody option, not too big or small, and across neutrals and non-neutrals. Here is my current collection. I sometimes attach guitar straps too.

Most of my bags are Furla because the brand meets my requirements over and over again. IMPECCABLE quality and very robust.

I struggle with decisions on bags. Functionality is equally important as design and quality for me.I walk and take transit, so my choices reflect my lifestyle. I expect my bags to last for years, no “one season” wonders.
I don’t have many, mine are organized by seasons and purpose:
Winter:
- crossbody, big enough to hold my laptop (black leather by Everlane)
- mid size crossbody for weekends (still looking for one)

F/S/S:
- shoulder tote with a zipper top to hold my laptop (navy nylon by Longchamp)
- mid size shopper (black leather by Tory Burch)
- mid size bucket bag (beige leather by Massimo Dutti)
- small crossbody (black leather by COS)

plus a clutch, a wristlet and an evening bag that I rarely use.

I use sort of a nested approach. I use a small keychain wallet that holds my essential cards and car key. That’s usually all I need to run errands. If I want to carry my phone and a few other essentials I use a small, black crossbody bag. My current bag is nylon and it works with athletic gear or business casual. It also converts to a belt bag. When I’m going to work I also carry a larger crossbody bag that my small crossbody fits in. This works for me because I drive everywhere and can keep things in the car.
In the winter, everything goes in my coat pockets.

I am not a handbag person. I rarely buy handbags, but I am very fussy about them. I prefer crossbody bags, leather bags, no logos and earth tones. I sometimes buy vintage bags.
I have a few clutches for going out, but they are not getting much use these days.
Currently, I am using a Roots black bag that I bought in the late 90s. It is in great condition. I also am using a Lululemon bronze canvas bag that is much smaller.

Just something that holds essentials-that lives in my car. I try to never have to carry one. Glasses on, car key in pocket, credit card in pocket. Even my phone lives in the car. With two dog leashes I can't handle a purse.

I LOVE handbags and have far too many. It took me a while to realize that shoulder bags work best for me. I was attracted to cross-body bags and clutches and handbags when they were trendy, but a shoulder bag of medium size works best for me (tiny bags make me look bigger, and large bags tend to overwhelm). They must have a secure closure (a flap over the top or a zipper) and they must be a durable leather. Logos don't work for me, primarily because I want a full leather bag.

So I really think that knowing what you like to carry and will use is the first step. Quality bags can be found at many price points, so brand isn't as relevant, IMO. The issue is that the style of bag you end up seeking may or may not be popular, and so you may find many more one year than another. Fortunately, a shoulder bag is a perennial style, even when things like belt bags and cross-bodies are trendy.

I'm not a handbag person. I have a few clutches for going out (not being used much lately!), and then I get a single bag for the season (spring/summer and fall/winter). Because I carry the same one everyday, and I am hard on them- by the end of the season they are pretty worn out and I pass them on. I buy leather, but not high-end. Usually a company like The Sak, or Lucky Brand...always across-body bag. What makes a bag work for me is overall size (many crossbody bags are not quite large enough for me), the depth- a flat, shallow bag does not work for me, and the look of it- I want something neutral enough to go with everything but that also has some visual interest. My current bag is a snakeskin print Lucky Brand number....I'm looking at a pieced design by The Sak for fall...
