I would love to have white teeth! When my permanent teeth came in when I was a kid, they were noticeably yellow compared with my baby teeth. I think I've read something about antibiotics doing that to your teeth buds if you are given them when very little (I had antibiotics as a young child). I tried one tooth-whitening kit at home, but it is a pain in the neck, and my teeth would get sensitive after a few days of it, so I never really got anywhere. I'd love to know what kind of results you get!

I don't think your teeth are dark to start with, Eirlys, so I think you'll get a great result. I've had lots of dental work in my life, so I always notice people's smiles and teeth. Plus I'm very attracted by people who have big, beautiful smiles.

I use at home whitening kits twice a year to keep my teeth looking good. I'm lucky in that my teeth were pretty white to start with, so the kits do well for me in maintaining what I started with.

You have a beautiful smile, and I really don't think your teeth look dark. Please don't get too white teeth. Sadly, some people's whitened teeth look very artificial and in disharmony with their other features.

You look wonderful in the photo! I have custom trays and have used the gel many times over the years. I have very sensitive teeth but was able to manage it. It can be difficult to see the difference because our eye adjusts quickly. My experience is that you will get several shades whiter.

I did this under the supervision of my dentist some years ago. It helped, but eventually I had to get crowns on some of my front teeth. So I say go for it.

I had the shields made and used the gel before my son’s wedding. I really did not see much difference but I drink lots of coffee and tea and some red wine and have blueberries every day so felt my teeth were doomed to be discolored. I have them professionally cleaned regularly. I will be checking this thread to see what others do. I am at the age where old fillings need to be replaced, often with crowns.
Good luck and your hair looks great in this style.

Good luck! I hope you get results you like. Please let us know how it goes.

I do not have naturally very white teeth -- even when I was young, before coffee and red wine, they weren't super white. So of course now they are not as white as I would like them to be. However, my primary concern is gum health -- I have some periodontal issues and go for quarterly cleanings (I alternate between visiting my regular dentist and a periodontist every three months), so it is certainly not for lack of attention that my teeth are not bright white.

I'm concerned about sensitivity issues, particularly since I have some spots in my gums that are prone to problems, so I have not gone for any intense whitening procedures. The strips are annoying and not very effective. I'd like to do something about this since I'm sure it doesn't help me look younger, but so far my dentist has not encouraged me to do anything more than our regular cleanings.

I've done whitening many times over many years using the custom-fit trays and whitening gel - it works great for me. I don't have any sensitivity issues and I'm careful not to leave the trays in for too long. As long as you don't have sensitive teeth, I recommend it (even if you do, I think there are ways to make it work for you), and I bet you'll be happy with the results.

I have had whitening done by a dentist - a long , tedious and mind-numbing procedure - and was satisfied with the results. Not wowed, but as the technician kept reminding me , blindingly white teeth look fake and bright white is also an impossible colour to achieve on most people . I'm obsessed with teeth (mostly because mine aren't perfect and I wish they were) and agree that nothing ages a person faster than yellowing teeth. I totally notice other peoples' teeth . It's one of the first things I notice when talking to someone for the first time. Hair and teeth :)

I have gel trays at home to use in between whitening sessions, which I will do again , and I need to be better at using them more often (it kind of falls off of my radar , to be honest). None of this is covered by my insurance, (I live in Canada) and it's not exactly inexpensive to do all of this but I'll keep it up as long as I can afford to do so. I think it's important in my line of work (sales) to present as polished, "young" and modern an appearance as possible.

I have only done the less intense at-home whitening (Crest Whitestrips) and wouldn’t recommend it.

My teeth are already very temperature sensitive (I had a lot of orthodontic work and gum procedures as a child to correct really messed up bite issues, and that’s when the sensitivity began, so that’s likely part of the problem) and the after-effects of whitening meant that anything that wasn’t close to room temperature- a cold or hot drink, food, even inhaling through my mouth outside on a cold day - huuuurt my jaw and teeth. I stopped immediately.

If you might have temperature sensitivity, proceed with caution and maybe talk to a dentist about side effects.

What a fabulous idea! I'm in the US and I used home kits once a decade ago, and wasn't happy. I plan on asking my desist about this - unfortunately when I was a younger working professional, I got by on coffee and adrenaline and my teeth have colored a bit - I notice it especially when I wear white (so I don't anymore - ha!).

Some of you may have read, and commented on my post regarding your special treat for 2010. I have another one planned for the coming weeks.

In the Uk we know of, and hate, the saying, "You can tell a Brit from his/her teeth". I hope that isn't true but I also know that escalating costs have meant that some people neglect going regularly to the dentist.

Here in the UK we do have NHS dentists but they are becoming scarcer on the ground. When mine retired I signed up with a private dentist and have noticed the difference! Teeth, however, need attention!

I still have most of my teeth : no dentures.and WW2 sweet and sugar rationing must, surely, bear some responsibility for this. However the colour over the years has deteriorated. I do like white teeth, a nice shade of white rather than teeth with a yellowish tinge. I am. therefore, planning to see my dentist and have my teeth whitened. So is my daughter.

We are having the gum shields fitted and syringes of gel to take home with us. I expect my daughter's teeth to respond better than mine, but I am also hoping for some improvement in mine.

Has anyone here had this done? Were you happy with the result? I know there are home kits but here in the UK there is a strict limit on the strength of the gel and users are not always happy with the end result.

I am posting an image taken today to show my (dark) teeth and my hair. (I was asked to post a photo of my hair style as it is now. Actually it is three days since I had my hair set and Sue is coming tomorrow!)

The orangey hue is the light cast by my salt lamp.
