My daughter has this same issue! I think we've had a conversation about this already, when I was coming to grips with her celiac disease diagnosis. She is short and slim for her age -- only 4'7" and starting grade eight in a month -- and, as it happens, is also very young for her grade, which doesn't help. While all of her friends will already be 13 when school starts, she'll be 12 until the end of November.

Anyway, yes, this is tough. She is very self-conscious about being tiny. For things that have to fit, Iike jeans, I usually go to the Gap or at a cute little boutique shop in the mall that sells jeans and yoga gear for tweens. I can't remember what it's called, unfortunately. The Gap and Old Navy are good overall for age-appropriate clothes for small tweens and teens. I've found that clothes from Old Navy are more likely to fall apart, however.

For leggings, shorts, tank tops and sometimes hoodies, I order from Hanna Andersson in the U.S. Don't be put off by some of their incredibly dorky clothes for little girls; they have some excellent basics and the quality is superb. My son lives in their clothes (they boy stuff is better, design-wise, than their girl stuff). I also recently got her a cute pair of suede "clog boots" from Hanna, which she fell in love with and begged me to buy. They make her a couple of inches taller, which makes her very happy. :-)

For modern-looking tops, I've occasionally and success at Aritzia. They make a lot of tops that are meant to be loose and flowy, so they don't have to fit as precisely as bottoms, and they do a lot of ridiculously small XXXS sizes.

Hope that helps!

Just remembered that my daughter's fav jean jacket, still in heavy rotation, is from Gap Kids.

It's tricky but if you can shop around and be open-minded, lots of places will have options.

I like shopping at Zara for my 10 year old. I regularly see, what look to me like, 16-20 year olds shopping there. They have a nice variety of styles and I find even their regular prices to be quite reasonable.

American Eagle has tops that come in XXS, and depending on the style, they can be cut pretty narrow. Their jeans also come in short lengths.

I'm also thinking of STYLES of dressing that are not so fit- dependent. So, a fluid sweater or tunic over leggings, as opposed to really tailored items that need to fit precisely in shoulders and stride and so on. Sweater and tank style dresses . Athleisure and sporty luxe. Footwear might be hard, but nowadays girls are wearing more " adult" shoe styles, so she might find some age- appropriate shoes and boots in small sizes too.
Here is where a great haircut might help, too! Something spunky and not childish.

Forever 21 tends to run small. Old Navy kids - particularly their jeans and chinos- will probably fit her and are versions of adult styles. You might look at Target too - they cater to teens and tweens. I have a feeling that dresses and coats might be hardest for her to find. Good luck

Justice comes to mind as a place that carries stuff in a really big size range (something like 8-18 with plus sizes), meaning she could get smaller clothes that are also available in teen sizes - but I think the look is more for younger kids who are big for their age. However I do have a niece who shopped there around that age, I believe. The general impression is a bit tacky and overdone but there are some cute things to be found. Trends can be so local to a particular school or crowd that it's tough to say.

Wasn't there a off-shore (China?) place that several forum members bought from a while ago. Rae or Una? Maybe something neon?

Is Hollister or Abercrombie an option? They have very small sizes available. Forever 21 might be an option but I think their smaller sizes run larger than Hollister.

In my area, there are a lot of little independant or small chain stores that are junior clothing stores run by Asian families which carry clothing cut for a smaller body. Some of the junior stores run small and might work well for her if she fits into junior sizes. Forever 21 is the only name I can think of right now, but they do have a wide variety.

My daughter was the same way. Gap Kids worked well, Delia's was great (but I think they are no long B&M stores, just online), and what used to be called Limited Too (the new name escapes me) was great for basics. In fact, both my daughters still like Limited Too camis. Old Navy worked sometimes, and is still worth a look. My older daughter had some growth issues and it was so hard for her to look like a kid when her friends were definitely young women. Now that Forever 21 and H&M carry kids clothes that might help, too. Tell her it gets better.<3

Stores like Old Navy, Gap, or H&M that have adults and kid sizes might be a good choice. We often browse both the Old Navy women's and kids section for my tall 6th grader, and many of their kid styles are basically identical to women's styles. She likes American Eagle too.

My daughter is very short, and when she was younger she shopped quite often at Delia's. (They used to have great sales). In fact, she still wears some jeans from them at age 24. The bottoms, in particular work very well for her.

Well, on the topic of Zara....they design for kids, too. I haven't actually looked at the offerings and don't know if any of the kids' wear would look enough teen for a young teen, but maybe?

The kids' stuff at J. Crew and Gap can be virtually identical to the adult stuff. So that might be another option.

Ditto any store that sells for petites and has a younger market. Because it sounds as if she may be into petites sizing.

I have a niece starting high school in the fall. Due to a thyroid problem, she is small for her age (short, not super thin, looking pre-puberty for the most part). This makes it difficult for her to shop for clothes that don't look like they are for younger children.

Does anyone have suggestions on stores that might have good options? My mom is looking to give her some gift certificates to stores that might suit her.
